senor_huevos_benedicto
When I saw the title of the OP, I thought it was going to be about if/why Rockstar is obsessed with re-creating the art of cinema in the video game format. I suggest that, in all the recent games (GTA IV, LA Noire, RDR and soon Max Payne 3), Rockstar has continued to push toward the ultimate holy grail of converging and immersing us in a movie. Evidence of this includes: (1) trying to make the gameplay have a cinematic feel (RDR and LA Noire for example, and stated explicitly in the Max Payne 3 technology trailer as a goal), (2) working really hard (maybe too hard) to make their cutscenes as shining examples of high fidelity machinima, and (3) giving us protagonists that are damaged from the outset, as a (cheap) mechanism for added drama, including downbeat ironic endings. While I think that convergence of video games with cinema experience (which probably will happen in next gen consoles and PCs) is a worthy and grand goal that Rockstar is on the leading edge to pursue, I don't think that all of their products should go this way. Specifically, I think Rockstar should leave a lot of the cinema worship to Max Payne 3 and other games designed for that mode, and keep GTA V (and VI) as open fun sandbox games rather than trying to emulate cinema. For example, I don't want a damaged protagonist -- I want to identify with someone on their way up, someone who is in control or who will be, by the end of the game. The game has been immortalising cinema and emulating it since Vice City, this isn't a recent thing.
The_Majestic
Yeah why is R* so obsessed with underrated things? has anyone else noticed...Or is it just me I think Rockstar has very good taste if you ask me... IBTL
StockLoc
Rockstar is the 'hollywood' of gaming. Think about all the action flicks you've seen and compare them to the way Rockstar's games feel. They feel identical, except in Rockstar's games; you truly feel like the protagonist and you feel like you have something to lose.
meson1
Mr No Chance. Your opening post isn't just vague. It doesn't make any sense. And the discussion that has developed from it, intelligent and interesting though it may be, still doesn't clarify what subject you were actually trying to raise in the first place. Well if you had read my second post i clarified that i was talking about the fact that Rockstargames are very interested in under appreciated things meaning they like to give attention to songs Etc.... films the main stream media doesn't really know about
llpalm08
Underated or you havn't heard of before? I think that it would just ruin the feel of the game to have mainstream stuff in it, I mean how can you rather have lots of songs you know very well than discover a load of new songs you havn't heard before or rediscovering songs you havn't heard for ages. On Saints Row 2&3 I was glad that I could make a custom playlist as it was full of mainstream songs that either I liked or didnt like whereas GTA IV I discovered and rediscovered songs because I had to listen to the songs I didnt know to get to the songs I did and in turn discovered new songs. Meezarawcks
I would much rather be exposed to things I've never heard/seen of then be shoveled the same crap I hear/see everyday.
