CJ is relatively low poly compared to a current-gen HD character but he's clearly based on Maylay before anyone else. D T
Niko Bellic would have been made to look like his actor if the actor had been Vladimir Mashkov, who played the character Niko is based on from Behind Enemy Lines. Mashkov confirmed he was offered and turned down the role in GTA IV. What apparently happened then was that Michael Hollick was the second choice to play Niko, but Rockstar still wanted an appearance similar to Mashkov's character (although the likeness is altered to not infringe Mashkov's rights). ImageMetrics technology allowed Hollick's facial performance to animate the face. CJ in San Andreas has Young Maylay's face and a number of characters in GTA IV have their actor's face. The ImageMetrics technology probably looks the most realistic with the least tweaking if the facial movements from the actor can be mapped directly to a 3D model of the actor's own face. Also, Max (in Max Payne 3 only of course) was made to resemble his voice actor James McCaffrey - not to mention he'll be doing all the mo-cap for his cutscenes. Rockstar has confirmed that James McCaffrey, the voice of Payne in the first two games, is returning to the character - this time in a full acting role. Similarly to the likes of Red Dead, the development has gone full performance capture, with actors performing in group mo-cap sessions. "The way we did it before, the actors were separated into recording booths, but now the performance that we capture is the performance that you see. It's definitely better for actors and for directors to work in that way. It's been amazing to watch it come alive - because we're doing a lot more live-action cutscenes and performances and we do it on the floor with the actors, we're seeing more of the character coming through. He's coming alive through these relationships - it's been fun to watch." says Nelson. I see no reason why they wouldn't do this with GTA5 and Ned Luke. Yeah where in Max Payne 2 his appearance was based on actor Timothy Gibbs, though James McCaffery still did the voiceover. As you also probably all know is that characters in L.A. Noire such as Cole Phelps were heavily based off their voice actors as well. Edited February 12, 2012 by Gst0395
Algonquin Assassin
Remember though in LA Noire characters were made to heavily resemble their voice actors due to motion scan. They're so accurate the first time I played it I remember recognizing actors/actresses from various tv shows/movies even if I don't know their names. For example Richard Coombes the car salesman in the Slip of The Tongue case. I recognized him as the principal from Scary Movie.
