How come the game doesn't crash for you? Whenever I do something related to fire it crashes.

You're using a fresh install, right?

I tried using a fresh install with steam, but steam sucks when it comes to mods so hmm I'll try my retail version because I had the xbox mod installed but I'll remove it.

I'd say that's it. Steam is a real bitch with mods.

Can you post a screen capture of a message from your source, telling you things about the beta?

From todays Asked & Answered:

"I'm a big Grand Theft Auto fan, and have extensively played and loved every game in the series, and upon research I came across screenshots and other information about the beta version of GTA III that was given to game testers, and some of the beta cars and features that were removed. Since it's been long since GTA III was sold at retail and interest is in the IV / V series now, I thought I'd email asking if there was any way I could obtain a copy (at a cost for inconvenience). I realise some things weren't put in the games for certain legal reasons for the retail copies, and you may be under legal obligation not to let the beta's out anymore, but no harm in me trying. Hope to hear from you soon smile.gif” – received via Mouthoff

One important thing we should clarify is that the early work-in-progress version of Grand Theft Auto III you’re referring to was not a proper ‘beta’ but an early pre-alpha build that was far from complete or really functional. While it would be a fun thing in theory to be able to pull up and play it to check it out, unfortunately it’s technically not possible. Thank you though for reaching out, it’s certainly been a lot of fun revisiting the days of GTAIII’s development with our long-time fans recently (make sure to check out our 2-part series of fan questions answered about Grand Theft Auto III here).

Seemed relevant to the thread.

unfortunately it’s technically not possible.

Steak of bullsh*t.

School for now, anyway.

They mean if they released the incomplete build of the game those old videos and screenshots came from, as-is, it would not be playable on any hardware/OS that people are likely to have and it would break when you play it because it's incomplete and was only capable of running demos in the hands of Rockstar engineers who knew what its limits were. Recreating the appearance of it as a mod to the finished game is technically possible, but it's not practical for Rockstar to do and modders are already doing most of it.

Niall, i have to notice that guy you asked have not mentioned in his quote about fact of non-existence of that early pre-alpha build. He just said it's impossible to launch on modern OS, at least, because that version was launching only on Playstation 2 DevKit version. So, there're some PS2 DevKits at popular e-auctions (personally i saw such version at Amazon.com). If it's possible to get that early version from hands of developers the purchase of DevKit's version is worthy of it.

Mr Myriad, the question wasn't from me but a quote from the R* Asked and Answered article.

I can't claim to know much about the beta or "pre-alpha" but if I'm not mistaken they had it playable at E3 in 2001,

I wouldn't think they would use dev kits to demo the game would they?

Niall, that version you gave video on is about latest beta, but alpha version. I meant they used DevKits for launching of gta 3 alpha and pre-alpha.

Lol, this mod was still there, but I think it isn't worth it.

The links were dead so i thought that wasnt any copy on the world of this beta mod.

Using that mod with your particles make a better beta gta 3 experience wink.gif

It won't work because the particle.txd in models is modified. I tried and the game crashed.

It's 1.1 . But I got the advanced version of the mod, with beta blue water and no reflections on vehicles.

However, on my unmodified copy of the game, it works perfectly.

Alright, first install gta 3 without any mods then install the beta mod 1.c without txd.img and txd.dir

Then you run a new game and then wait the game create txd.dir

And then install the particles and run your game(old savegames wont work)

Thanks, but I already know it. What I say is that it doesn't work if particles.txd is modified.

Anyway, when for timecyc.dat ?

Holy crap....dude, YOU'RE AWESOME. Ignore that Frank guy. Do you think you'll be able to coax the German dude to upload the gta3.img?

Also, carcols.dat,default.ide and timecyc are next? Think he has the .ipl files?

Of course I will try. Believe me guys, this is not fake like Newport says. People are just strange - no one wants to send this sh*t like German dude has done.

I don't hear any difference with the sounds.

Neither. Other than the crowd screams I mentioned, nothing definitive. Unless Filip would be willing to post another video addressing audio in the near future...?

I'd be satisfied with a timecycle though wink.gif

Sure, there are differences. If you walk down the streets of the city, without a car, you will hear the peds conversations and comments, and in this file, there are some that were not in retail.

Ok, yes i judged the mod before downloading it, i aint doing that again. tounge.gif I've got nothing against beta III mods, i like 'em.

Edit: I know its original files, i meant mod as in: "A change to the pc game which isn't visible in the pc release version".

Awesome, and agreed. We're legit GTA fans, I don't see why people would be concerned with giving the files up. It's not like we're a bunch of of weird eccentric guys in our 50's that collect video games/toys and pay outrageous amounts of money at auctions for them.

Will timecycle be up over the weekend?

Would be a shame for this topic to get lost.

Led him a few time. He proved he was clean already, so he must be busy once again, that's all. Just wait.
