AxER
I'm hoping they'll find some good mid-way between GTA IV and SA as far as the gangs and territory go. I get the feeling (purely from the trailer) that the protagonist will be a freelancer rather than a member of a specific gang, so I doubt it will have as big an impact as it did in SA. kb24sd
Gangs will play a big role in GTA V. What a lot of people don't get or are missing when they compare GTA San Andreas gang involvement and how big a role and how that was tied into the main story line. Is that GTA San Andreas plot and main story was based off the late 80's & early 90's. Which during that time in real life LA that was a HUGE & MAJOR problem. Algonquin Assassin
If their isn't* bloods/crips *compton * gang activity Rockstar is racist imo Not really sure how that's racist, but obviously they will be in the game as it's a clear representation of LA. Considering R* have already made a game with a black protagonist somehow I doubt racism is on R*'s agenda. I mean why wouldn't it feature Compton? I know Staten Island wasn't in GTA IV for some reason, but Compton is the first thing to come to mind when thinking of South Central LA. It would be like VC without Little Havana. Of course Compton (or whatever its GTA name is) will be in GTA V. Edited February 2, 2012 by Miamivicecity

DeconstruKt
Most gangs in LA are hispanic though, I hope rockstar sticks to this. I saw a documentary awhile back where black gang members said the Hispanic gangs outnumbered them 10 to 1.. and they were getting their asses kicked on the streets. Los Santos Pedestrian
The gang activity in GTA IV's Liberty City was extremely over-exaggerated. NYC today has an equivalent crime rate (of all kinds) of Provo, Utah. It's probably the safest major city in America, and has less mafia activity than the time of its first appearances. But L.A. is still ravaged with organized crime. Being so close to Mexico, a lot of drug traffickers move through that city and crack-cocaine use is near the same levels it was in 1992. So L.A... er, L.S. will not have over-exaggerated crime.

OMG this! on that note, everyone should watch the movie City of God, It isn't a documentary or anything, but it accurately depicts how powerful the gangs are. hayden11
Let's face it, you can't have a fictitious city based around LA without gangs. Of course they won't play as big a part as in SA, its highly unlikely the protagonist is so involved in gang life. But I think they must play a big role in most areas of the city. senor_huevos_benedicto
Yeah there'll probably be more missions with gangs than there were in GTA 4.
Samsuxx
Hopefully not. I hated the gangs in SA. Okay, the missions during the story were nice, but it was annoying as hell when you were driving through the streets with no bad intentions and you suddenly get shot. They can include them but with the possibility to make "peace contracts" with them. Otherwise it wouldn't make fun imo

However one could say that the gangs were a lot more open and violent in the nineties, and this was (loosely) represented in the game.
Official General
I've been playing TLAD again and it got me wondering what's the biker scene like in LA/California these days? @ Miami TLAD was ok, but I did'nt like the fact that it Rockstar put biker gangs in Liberty City and Alderney. It felt quite unrealistic to me, as in real-life white biker gangs are not really that prominent in the present-day New York/New Jersey underworld and gang scene. I was even more annoyed and baffled that there were white biker gangs running all over North Holland (Harlem), and they even replaced the black street gangs there. That was a major blunder on Rockstar's part, it just did'nt make sense as far as realism is concerned. I'm pretty sure you will not see bikers gangs in like TLAD with a presence in today's New York City. Rockstar should have saved the TLAD story/theme for GTA V's California-inspired setting, because in real-life, white biker gangs have a very strong and significant presence in California. The wider open roads and vast expanses of a Cali-style environment would best suit a biker gang presence within a GTA game. However they can always put in a newer kind of biker gang, or make a new chapter of the original GTA IV biker gangs in V.

Smaaske I know that, thats why I stated "they are not really prominent in the New York/New Jersey gang and underworld scene". I did'nt say that biker gangs do not exist in the places mentioned, I'm just saying that they have very little influence or presence there, so it was a bit too unrealistic of Rockstar to portray biker gangs in GTA IV as a major part of the Liberty City/Alderney underworld. Read the post a bit more clearly please. In real-life, the present-day New York and New Jersey underworlds consists almost entirely of Mafia, European crime groups and Black and Hispanic street gangs/drug organizations. Biker gangs do not play a major role in this gangland set-up. @ finn4life I was gonna respond to that guy in the exact same way you did. He obviously does not know what he's talking about lol. Okay, the missions during the story were nice, but it was annoying as hell when you were driving through the streets with no bad intentions and you suddenly get shot. It wasn't that much of a problem in San Andreas, gangs were relatively not dangerous. In GTA III, that was an issue, the Leone were so strong most players usually avoided their neighbourhoods as much as possible. In real-life, the present-day New York and New Jersey underworlds consists almost entirely of Mafia, European crime groups and Black and Hispanic street gangs/drug organizations. Biker gangs do not play a major role in this gangland set-up. Well, they don't have that much influence in IV. At the end of TLAD, the Lost get their safehouse destroyed, they consider the triads a strong gang and try avoiding conflict with them (while Niko and Luis see them as a small gang). In TLAD, the Lost mostly fight against other biker gangs or street gangs, they rarely fight against the mafia. Anyway, my point is, R* didn't really mess up by making them too influent since they are not in IV/TLAD.

Gtaman_92
Los santos is based on la so the street gangs will definetly play some role in the game. I hope the multiple protagist thing is true because i want one main character to be a street gangster.
