Typhus
Be prepared for idiotic kids on the internet to wish death upon you because they're trying to be cool anti-establishment rebels just like everyone else. Because, as you know, once you become a cop, you're automatically a Nazi.

Original Light
I'd say that you're all set. Just stay out of trouble, and continue to keep your records clean. The requirements are different for different departments, so it all dpends on your Country/State/Town/City you're applying for. I plan on being an Officer too, so I'm going to do the education requirements that most departments require. I think you need 2 years for a city and 4 years for a town, but this isn't always the case. I'm in the U.S so it may be different.

lil weasel
Our city wants a couple of years of college, too. And, don't forget the drug tests. How much firearms training do you have? EMT training is required. Reminded: While it is against the Law for a private business in our state to Polygraph potential employess/employees the State does it for any police job. darthYENIK
I've had a few friends go through police recruitment. So I've been told a couple times that there is a lie detector test and drug tests. So stay off illegal drugs. My brother went out for LA county Sheriffs and CHP, I think he failed the physical on one and the lie detector in the other. Even though he doesn't do drugs or actively break the law. And I have another friend who was well into the recruitment process and was close to being sworn in when he got arrested for DUI. That ended it pretty quick. You need to remember that being a police officer isn't just a public service job like the garbage man where nobody cares what you do. It's a government job, albeit local government, it still is affected by politics.

I know i have to be 21, im 17 right now but still. By the way, i am fit and active, i have a GED already and i have a drivers licence. I was a police officer in the military and let me tell you, it isnt all driving around in a police car, handing out tickets and shooting bad guys. And its not all about being smart and fit. I know some book smart guys, but they dont have the street smarts to do their job right. 1. I worked anywhere from 11 hours to 15 hours depending on if anything happend durring my shift. Oh, and it was 6 days a week. 2. There is ALOT of paperwork. Someone gets in a fenderbender, plan on being there 3 hours doing paperwork. 3. The bulletproof vests are uncomfortable and extremely hot in the summer. 4. You CANNOT make a mistake. These are peoples lives and your life you are handling. 5. If you have a family like I do, expect not to see them anymore. You will have to explain to your wife and child why you cant be there on Christmas or their birthday. (it sucks) 6. Sometimes it gets borring (expecially on the midnight shift) You WILL be tired and you'll have nothing to do. You drive around for hours, looking for something to do or until the dispatcher calls you to something. But its not all bad, you get pride in your job and it feels good to have a little power (but dont let it get to your head. your comrads will hate you) But I would suggest looking into it a little more and call your local police department to go on several ride alongs and get a feel for it. Dont jump into anything. Hoped this helped and good luck

Oddsock
Good luck man! I'm thinking of becoming a Maryland State Trooper in a few years. I went to an orientation of theirs and learned a good amount of stuff about their recruiting process. If you've done any drugs, TELL THEM. This isn't the military where they say "don't tell us what you've done cuz then we get paperwork." They want to know exactly everything you've done. DOING DRUGS WILL NOT DISQUALIFY YOU. You have to understand that you may die on this job. You should be in it for the right reasons. Police work doesn't pay well right off the bat and it's demanding. Do it because you want to protect and serve, not so you can get a take-home vehicle and boss people around. Polygraph (lie detector) tests can be fooled easily. My cousin applied for a job with the CIA and had to go through one. What they do is ask you a series of surprising questions ("Have you ever had gay sex" or something like that) and then measure your responses to regular questions against those of the surprising questions. Lying supposedly produces results similar to your emotions when asked surprising questions so they'll know you're lying. In that case, you can easily fool the detector by clenching your sphincter when asked a surprising question to make almost any response look truthful and calm in comparison. Good luck man! Original Light
Shoot first, ask questions later. If they're black, assume they're guilty. Pretty much the opposite of Slammans post. I have nothing against black people, infact, I have more black friends than white friends. So I have always respected black people, but I do have disrespect for the bad ones. You can usually tear apart the good ones from the bad ones. Looks are important, and can even make a difference in geting a job. People will make opinions of who you are based on how you look, sadly. So it is wrong to judge people on looks, but sometimes it's completely obvious to tell the difference between a drug dealer and a normal pedestrian. Guns N R0se
Hi OP! I am a Criminal Justice major, maybe going into police work. Do a ride-along, just go to your local station and ask for a form, you get to go with the police on their patrol. (You have to be 18) Also get a degree, you'll earn more (I know around me they pay more for each degree you possess) as well as you need one for advancement in the future. It's what keeps the economy going. 11. Pull over someone for no reason, use your baton to break their taillight and fine them for having a broken taillight. Trust me... I got experience. AlexGTAGamer
I wanted to be a copper at one point in my life, but over here the fact that officers have to do so much paperwork really discouraged me (plus there are big cuts going on in the forces at the moment). So I think I'll just be a riot officer instead. Best of luck to you.
trip
Unfortunately, that's probably not enough for most departments. A GED is not at all making you competitive. I suggest you get at least an Associate's Degree. Yes. It has only been in the past couple of years that our force starting taking people in the academy without a full HS degree, and I thought we were one of the only cities that made that change. Since it hasn't gone over very well, it may even get repealed. Take that GED and do 2 years in the armed services and that may help. <- just a guess out of my ass. GTA_stu
Where I come from cop is a dirty word. Not because we don't like them, it's just a euphamism for oral sex. One of my friends that I've known for yonks n yonks (means long time) wants to become a policeman. He was just about the most thuggish person I knew for a while as well, in fact he still is a bit of a lout. Well he'll be your problem America, because his dream is to move to the US and become a policeman. He's thick as sh*t so no chance of it happening, but it does still make me shudder at the thought of him having authority over people.

lil weasel
Well if yoz gusy is going that way. 1. Remember Blue Never Does Wrong. If something happens that looks like it's a mistake get the story straight with the other guys before any of you make a statement/write a report. 2. "The bluntest pencil is sharper than the sharpest mind", quote from academy instructor. 3. Blue is your friend, civilians arn't no matter how much they smile, or buy you drinks at the bar. 4. Keep your drinking confined to home and the Union bar. 5. Make your quota each month. Keep your averages up. 6. Be sure you know all the commissioners, council members and other important area Big Wigs on sight. 7. Follow the Union suggestions on Politics. 8. Take note of the religion is for the Superior Officers. 9. Watch out for Minority officers, while they used to be good hard workers fighting for their postions now most of them are for Polical Correctness (listen to their speech patterns and read their reports.) A local department has transcribers so they can give verbal reports 'on the phone' from the scene, to sign when they get back to the station. 10. New officers are College trained, with no more sense than how to tie their shoes for inspection. 11. The closer to retirement an officer gets, the weirder he acts. They don't respond as they used to. You can't trust their judgement. Some will become cowards, others will become John Wayne. 12. Watch out for cop wives. 13. Watch out for cop kids. Nothing like giving a ticket to one, especially if the kid has a Sargent for parent. Edited February 2, 2012 by lil weasel
ryuclan
Being a black male who also aspired to be an officer on top of being tagged as "looking like a cop" I have to say that being a cop is not all beatings and tickets. There is mountains of paperwork, asshole citizens and preconceptions regarding your character. My gf didn't want me to become a cop because she say they "are abusive." Anyway if protecting and upholding the law is your cup of tea do it.
lil weasel
Good say. A few cops who really cared about their beats kill themselves when they are stifled. A few cops kill themselves when they are caught without honor. Some just quit when they find the Blue Wall is on the wrong side of their life's honor line. A cop has to be dispassionate. A cop shouldn't be a bully. After a few years of dealing with the mentalities of the neighbourhood, and the other cops, some give up or give in, most plod along. There is no usefull tests that can determine which persons make good policemen.
Officer620
Always be positive, confront negativity, and never assume anything. Remain professional. This is one thing you should always maintain throughout your entire police career, from start to finish, and even when you're off-duty. You are always in the eyes of the public, and professionalism is what the public expect of their police service. Always wear your uniform with pride, be courteous and helpful towards the community. A sense of humour is also important to have, as long as it doesn't get you into trouble.
Jay
i have to be 21 I'm in the process of becoming a piggy as well right now. Just make sure you get some "life experience" in between now and when you're 21. Travel, work full time, do charity work, etc. At least down here, that's very important.
