Saxton Hale
Ok, so i had bought GTA IV (Steam version) many mounths ago. Had it running great on a comp with a Intel [email protected] wiht a Nivida card (forget specs, was a 1gb) Then, when i installed it on my new laptop (Windows 7, Intel i7, Nvidia GeForce GTx 560m 3gb and 8gb of RAM.) When I booted up my game after instaling it, Resolution was at 600x800. I thought no biggy, I will just change it (I run 1900x1280 or something close). But, when i go to click on the option to change it, it flickers up to the resoultion for a fraction of a second, then swiches back to 800x600 (only the bar moved, the actual resoultion did not change, i had not pressed accept) This happens wiht all my graphics options (Render distance etc) I have tryed reinstalling the game, and everthing is up to date. Also, at the bottom, it says my system memory usage excedes my limt. It says using 200mb out of 3024mb. After running a benchmark to see waht i could see, it says my total system memory is 5gb (my procsessor devots some of its unused resoreses to help the video.) The Auto Configre button works, but makes the game window only the size of about 3x4 inches in the top left of my screen. Hopefully someone can help, as right now, my move making career is in the dumps wihtout my fav game to make moves on!
mkey82
It's due to sandy bridge. Make sure to install the latest GPU driver. If that doesn't work try using nomemrestrict. http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=458859
Saxton Hale
What the hell is sandy bridge? And how can it affect my game?
mkey82
Well, since you're so nice I'll google it for you... no wait, I won't. The problem is the game doesn't detect your GPU properly so you get reduced performance.
satsatt
Hi, i just installed GTA IV and also can not switch to higher resolution than 800x600 and lowest other settings. this is no fun My specs are AMD FX 8 core at 3.6Ghz / Win7 x64 8Gb RAM / Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 3Gb / Samsung TV full HD HDMI Input I have the newest GPU driver and -nomemrestrict doesnt do nothing. can somebody please give me some hints? thanks Edited February 29, 2012 by satsatt
mkey82
Hint 1: watch it with double negatives. Hint 2: did follow all the steps correctly for the norestrict option? Look here http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=458859
satsatt
i tryed double -, deleted settings files but nothing worked. Still have 800x600 and "used resources" 210/3026" no problems with assassins 2 in highest mode I think this is a waste of my lifetime
mkey82
I don't understand, have you or have you not followed the exact steps for using the commandline switches?
satsatt
I created a commandline.txt (not txt.txt ) inside i put -norestrictions -nomemrestrict "Generally, I don't recommend using these two switches at all." but i figured i should use these or not? i copyed the file into the Folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV - i started the game, went into options/grafics and tryed to change resolution - not possible Then next time i even deleted the game settings. no effect i also tryed some other arguments -height -width --norestrictions --nomemrestrict
mkey82
OK, that's clear enough. In these cases those switches are usually necessary. The problem is, in some rare cases they don't seem to work and you're doing everything right, apparently. Try putting only "-benchmark" switch inside the text file and see if that will start the benchmark. What you can also try is putting the switches into to the shortcut to the game launcher, just append them to the target path.

YankeesPwnMets
Do you have the Steam version of the game?
satsatt
I bought it from amazon. I think all arguments either in the txt or shortcut are ignored. I tryed also execute as admin and set compatibility settings to Vista SP1. Edited March 5, 2012 by satsatt
mkey82
Sometimes the switches are ignored and this seems to be one of such cases. This amazon version you have downloaded, which game version is it? Do you have some compatible patches for download? You can find the exe version if you look in GTAIV.exe details under properties. When you start the game, are you using the launcher, LaunchGTAIV.exe? satsatt
yes i use the launcher. The GTAIV.exe is 1.0.0.0 I think when i installed the game it downloaded some updates/patches himself; i not use specific patches yet. I applied for a ticket from Rockstar. Thank's for Your help. mkey82
Does amazon offer patches for download? If yes, you should download them manually. If the game exe says it's version 1.0.0.0 then no updates have been applied. Also, don't count on coherent responses (if any) from R*.
satsatt
Oh amazon offers the link to R* for patches and R* has a patch 1.0.7.0 Now i am rid of the R* Club , only the SocialClub pops up for login. Neither a account for online playing nor the offline mode can start the game at all anymore. A mousepointer with rotating disc is showing some seconds and thats all. - what a crap programm maybe it doesn't like deamon tools but i need it Edited March 6, 2012 by satsatt
mkey82
It definitely doesn't like daemon tools, securom will go apesh*t about it.
satsatt
Ok last try - deinstalled daemon tools again - no change. So i just decided i don't like securom at all and will think twice before i buy a game again - we all knew there are other possibilities. This time i don't knew what came over me maybe i was in the mood when buying hardware being a better person and also buying some lizensed software going with it. -promise it won't happen soon again. To all other members of this forum thank's for the help and have fun !
unc13bud
i have had gfwl games lock up and won't play because of windows 7 xp compatibility mode, ie both flatout and devil may cry gave errors saying i had daemon tools, when i had none.
satsatt
now working ok The newest NVIDIA driver has problems with several games - use older one ( and get rid of that secu*** sh*t ). R* answered: If your grafic card has more than 2GB vidmem, sometimes GTA IV thinks the system resources are too low. therefore use "commandline.txt" with -availablevidmem 2.0 if this doesn't work try : -availablevidmem 3.0 -availablevidmem 4.0 -availablevidmem 5.0 -availablevidmem 6.0 and so on Edited March 18, 2012 by satsatt
