Setting up SLi For Beginners

I haven't got an SLi motherboard, or Crossfire, yet, but I'd like to focus on getting GTA tuned to running on these rigs specifically, where as some of the single card "entry" levels perform underwhelmingly, my idea is to replace the one 8600 nVidia card (in my case) with two, and I got lucky because as soon as I was looking, I found the identical card, Palit 8600GT with the same memory GDDR3 spec, so I want to team these graphic cards up to conquer GTA on PC, where trying just one came up short.

 

The motherboards, as you know, based on chipsets supporting the PCIe x16, x8, and x4 lanes, often you may wind up with less then 16 channel if you mate more then one card per board, it seems from looking at options out there. Used in my case, but new is worth mentioning

 

What SLI or Crossfire connectors should one be looking at? In terms of requirements, since I had to supply my own DVI to HDMI connectors, for example. I see SLI ribbon style for connecting cards that may sit further apart then two adjacent slots, so, can those be used in either setup?

i don't know if rockstar toronto ever got around to eve enabling SLI, but from reading the posts in the forums here, i know crossfire has problems. best to buy the fastest card (with the most shaders, etc) you can afford THAT COMPLEMENTS your CPU.

IV doesn't support SLI.
