Grand Theft Auto in New Jersey

I am from Jersey so I admit I am biased but why not?

You can have run down ghetto areas similar to Camden and Newark

They can include the Jersey Shore area

Wilderness and rural areas based on the Pine Barrens

Atlantic City

There can be some nice chases on the Turnpike.

Also the political corruption here can provide ideas for a nice storyline.

Does anybody else agree?

I am playing GTA 4 right now but I figure a more detailed Jersey game would be a good idea. Alderney is pretty much just the industrial areas right outside of NY.

I live in NJ too. I believe that Rockstar would have to base GTA off of only two places if they actually wanted to make a game that's replicated out of New Jersey. Either Camden or Atlantic City. Camden is basicly ghetto, so Rockstar could include street gangs in it. And Atlantic City is obviously a "mafia-ish" styled place.

I think they can have Camden, Atlantic City and the shore area such as Seaside Heights, Wildwood and Point Pleasant then in between they can have the Pine Barrens and some of the smaller more rural towns.

Now that you say Wildwood, there never really was a GTA where the map was replicated out of a shore.

I've been living in NJ for quite a while now, and I would love to see a replication of Elizabeth - the town where I currently reside.

I think it'd be so surreal to see streets that I take almost daily to college and work!

Regardless, I don't think it's ever going to happen lol

Besides GTA IV and III that is (which, lets be honest, both didn't fully do justice to NJ to begin with dozingoff.gif).

I live in Atlantic City and it is not "mafia-ish styled" here anymore at least. The boardwalk and casinos are crowded and filled with amusements and stuff but when you get away from them it's really ghetto and dangerous. Modern Atlantic City is nothing like Boardwalk Empire. It's filled with prostitutes, drugs and crime. Forget about "Mafia-Ish" styled places if you're rooting for Atlantic City. If you're rooting for a city that offers entertainment of course, by all means go for Atlantic City, Wildwood, Jackson, NJ (Six Flags reference), Seaside Heights, etc... just don't recommend Atlantic City for mafias and whatnot, at least today of course.

I think this would be a good map for the game.

One area would be Southern Jersey with areas like Camden, Trenton, Atlantic City and other Places. You can have a whole lot of run down ghetto kind of areas in this part. This would be the first stage of the game.

The second stage of the game would be the North Jersey areas like Elizabeth, JerseyCity, Newark and East Rutherford. They can even include the Meadowlands and Giants stadium. Maybe even throw in Edison, New Brunswick and other places

The next would be the shore area with Seaside Heights, Wildwood, Asbury Park and other places. You can also introduce Jet Skis to the game and have chase missions on Barnegat Bay. This would probably be the last stage of the game.

In between they can have the Pine Barrens, small rural towns like those in Warren County, Burrlington County and other places.

Just like others in this thread, I'm also from NJ. Born, raised, and still living in Jersey City to be exact. And I always had a love/hate feeling for Alderney in IV. I love the fact that they actually put Jersey in the game, that was the whole reason I bought IV on release day. What I hated was the fact that they haven't done it any justice. And it wasn't just from the map alone, after awhile I got to understanding why the map was done it way it was, it's the fact that they dropped the ball the little details, the biggest one is failing to give Alderney its own identity from Liberty City, even though its referred to as an "independent state".

I've used the idea of concept threads in the past to show an idea of what a GTA set in a more accurately correct Alderney State would be like, which features a lot of the places in Jersey you've mentioned, and there were a lot of mixed reactions. You had those who liked it, those who said "I rather go to [insert location] than Alderney", and the usual hate and people saying that I'm biased because I live there, but the main purpose was to point out that a game set in Alderney can offer everything that the other games have.

The only thing constructive someone said as to why R* wont use Alderney as a stand alone location is because they will always use locations thats the most recognizable to international audiences, which is usually the ones seen in the all of the movies, which are the ones they have already been using. In a way, i had to agree with him, but its a shame really. So to make up for the Alderney game we never gong to get, I'm development a GTA webcomic series based in Alderney State, which is still in development, but I wont say any more than that since everything you need to know is in my sig.

If I could find some of those threads I would like to look at them.

Though I hate those reality shows especially since I live at the shore and hate the image it gives us I figure it would be a good time for Rockstar to take advantage of the Jersey trend. It least give us an expansion pack.

As a New Jersey resident, one thing that I find to be a huge "what could have been" moment is the fact that GTA IV came out before Jersey Shore premiered, along with all the other Jersey-sploitation reality shows that followed (Jerseylicious, Jersey Couture, Real Housewives of NJ). Now, I've never seen a full episode of that show, just clips on YouTube and The Soup (I tried to watch a full episode once, it was boring as sh*t). However, I feel that, if Rockstar had made IV today, or if Jersey Shore had come on the air and been a hit a few years sooner, Alderney would be a much better and more distinct setting, simply because the area it's based on would have a much higher pop culture profile and, with it, higher expectations on Rockstar's part to make a good Jersey. That, and because Rockstar loves to make fun of American pop culture, and this would've been a perfect opportunity to do just that. There would've been an actual Shore, for one, rather than the crappy beaches on the north side of the island, and with it a proper Garden State Parking Lot (sorry, Parkway). Instead, all we got was Jersey City/Hudson County and the industrial areas, which doesn't even cover all the Jersey stereotypes.

I feel that Alderney should've been a lot more suburban in character than Liberty City in order to distinguish it. Broker felt like Brooklyn, Dukes felt like Queens, Bohan felt like the Bronx, Algonquin felt like Manhattan, so why did Alderney feel like Queens and the Bronx rather than Jersey? The parts of Jersey that got represented just so happen to be the parts that are most like New York City, which made Alderney simply feel like an extension of LC rather than a distinct setting. To distinguish Alderney, I would've expanded Westdyke and Leftwood, added in a mall (such as, say, the mall that was in Dukes rather than Alderney), put in a big, Route 46-style drag covered in strip malls (maybe replacing Panhandle Road?), removed the taxicabs, given the police their own cars and uniforms (they did that in San Andreas with the cops for each city and the countryside), given Alderney cars their own license plates (again, see San Andreas), put in a few open areas like the Meadowlands, and of course, added in a real Shore, in the southern part of Alderney. That way, you'd run the entire gamut of "Noo Joisey" stereotypes -- beaches, suburbia, swamps and ill-behaved Italians in addition to industrial wasteland.

And a New Jersey without a single Kevin Smith or [adult swim] reference? For shame, Rockstar.
