Is a past setting now impossible?

As well as shining a mirror to the present day, the GTA Series has also done an excellent job shining a mirror in the eyes of the eighties and the nineties with Vice City and San Andreas respectively.

 

However, would another game set in the past now be impossible due to the cellphone?

 

It was an integral part of GTA 4 - it's where you received a lot of missions, accessed most side missions etc. - and in my mind it would be very difficult to go back to a time when the modern mobile phone did not exist.

can be done other ways; payphones, pagers or even have a "little black book" as such, a pocketbook with phone numbers and cheats, so when you approach a payphone it brings up the book with your options. think LA Noire style

RDR and LA Noire shows that cellphones are not that necessery for a good game.Still hope for GTA in 70's.They vould have phones in safehouses like in Godfather 1 game,or maybe if we own specific car we could haveradio like big trucks still use.

Or, if the game takes place around the late 70's, you could have car phones which were very popular and were one of the predecessors to the cell phone. That would work as an alternative to them.

Naw, just be carrying one of those cell phones with it's own docking station attached by coily wire.

That would be sweeeeet.

 

That does mean no dual wielding, but I could sacrafice DW for a massive box in one hand.

Running is out of the question too.
