Pumpkin Zone
Depending on the engine different games will use different pedestrian spawning codes. Â Now for example, Saints Row uses it's own character creation system with some tweaks (for older/more abstract body types) to create peds. Meaning that in the same way that it uses scales for different parts to the face, such as nose width or depth, it uses these to create a random looking person. While at first this may seem like a great idea, reason being that in theory having a slider system could produce a very large amount of characters, it's all editing the same face. So you end up with a bunch of different guys who look all like they have the same uncle. Â To change this you'd have to have a lot of different pieces of a face, that can then be randomized and generated together. There are a lot of games that use this method but as far as I know none that use pedestrians in the manner that open-world games such as GTA do. Â Â But on the flipside GTAIV had different pre-determined faces, on different body types, layered with multiple pieces of an outfit that had their own textures. I thought that GTAIV was a gigantic leap in terms of making me feel like there were actually different people in this world, but it still had its drawbacks. Â So if Rockstar can create some sort of engine that uses the same 'piece of the pie' system that GTAIV had but increase the parts tenfold. Eyes, noses, feet, hands, lips, cheeks, ears, rings, chains, undershirts, overshirts, and jackets. Add to that multiple textures on multiple pieces, the choice for colors and skin tones, and you have a huge array of different looking people that could fill a small solar system. Â [edit - I don't think anyone wants oversh*ts as a part.] Edited January 29, 2012 by Scottendo
Slamman
I'm not as concerned with how many are different, but as someone posted back prior to SA original, they mentioned following peds around on their daily routine, we noted peds get surprised and drop their contents, they then either walk off or run, they will park their vehicle and start an aimless walk, in a situation where you can steal their car without any issue from them, they show no concern, so for AI I want to see this improve to a more realistic level, and more peds in City locales, from the trailer evidence, it seems there are improvements at least, since GTA IV...Since RDR is more of a stretch perhaps
Ispintechno
If the trailer is accurate (and I'm sure it is), I think we're looking at a giant leap forward. Particularly with so many different type of peds spawning in a manner where it makes sense geographically. It looks awesome. I think people watching might be even more fun in this version. 73duster
There are obvious improvements as far as pedestrians not being cloned as much, but i think it is unreasonable to expect to completely eliminate seeing the same people popping up all the time. Even if it was possible through the hardware capability, it would just be an enormous task to create tens of thousands of different looking pedestrians. It would require a team of people who would be solely working on that, and would also tack on a huge amount of time towards the games development. So while it may be possible, it's just not worth the investment. It IS getting better and better though, especially considering the scope of such an open world game. D T
I know the game is still in development, but there's a couple of things that worry me in the trailer: Â These women appear to share the exact same model with altered textures: Â Â This man shows up twice with the same shirt: Â Â These hobos show up with the same jacket: Â Â And this funny looking walking animation is used on almost every pedestrian: Â Â This worries me because Red Dead Redemption had a similar problem, where every male pedestrian had John Marston's silly looking walking animation and clones were seen everywhere. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but after playing a game like GTAIV you begin to notice minor details like this. In GTAIV, there are 340 unique characters, each with multiple sets of clothing and at least 1 unique set of dialogue. Plus, there are around 30 unique, believable looking walking animations made specifically for them. To this day, I'll still see a pedestrian I have not yet noticed, or hear new dialogue from bumping into somebody. Gtaghost22
I think 100% unique peds will NEVER happen.. at least this gen, but i'm sure GTA V will have diffirent type of pedestrians. And. Even if they re-used the same models they wont use the same clothes. (like in GTA IV) So you wont see the same pedestrian 2 times in a row.. @Deadly Target its just a rushed trailer. R* released to get the fans hyped about GTA V , the final build will be much better.. gtahoss
They did a great jobs whit peds in iv. Â It's def... the cars they got to work on, more veriety at all times, everywhere would be better then spacific types in specific places. Â and not basse the cars around you for what you hapen to be driving.

DarrinPA
Sure, GTA IV had more choices of peds, yet at the same time nothing really made them unique. GTA SA made each ped feel as if they had a personality and different attitudes, which made me take notice of each individual, rather than a simple clothes change on the same model. Peds like gangs in GTA IV seem to blend in. I can still recall ped models in the GTA III era though this is probably because you'd get 2/3 of the same guy within metres of eachother. Thus making them stand out. Â I still prefer what was in GTA IV. In a city of millions it added to the immersion that you would be walking among many different people. I don't get that with the GTA III era. It was.... well the attack of the clones lol. Edited January 29, 2012 by Miamivicecity
Finn 7 five 11
I don't care too much about ped models being 100% different. They were unique enough as is. Â I'm more interested in the different types of Peds - little grannies with walking sticks, - people in wheelchairs in hospitals, - some guy on crutches - People riding on skateboards - People dressed as Mascots in supermarkets - Children (let the ethics debate rage!) Â I'm more interested in having variety of cars on the roads, because about 70% of the time I'm in a vehicle and don't really notice the peds on the sidewalk. I wish they would stop with the 5 of the same cars on the road that plagues GTA. Â At the same time I'd hate if they did it like Saints row - all cars on the road are unique, but at the expense of car spawns. So instead of having 15 cars on the road where 7 are identical, there are only 4 cars on the road each being completely different. I suppose the obsolete 2005 technology of the PS3 and Xbox 360 is all we can blame. That's a good idea. Remember the roller skaters in VC? Different types of peds is a must for me and given the location I think that's what we can expect. In rural towns we should also have the stereotypical hill billies. Â Speaking of which I was playing SA the other day out in Palamino Creek I'm sure and I saw the bald, shirtless hill billy ped riding a bmx. I thought "wtf?" lol. I don't think I've ever seen him ride a bmx before. Yeah IV lacked that a little, they improved clothing and such, but not everyone is in their 20-30's and have no obvious ailments. Johnny Playert
All throughout the GTA III era it was obvious R* recycled a lot ped models. Sometimes you may come across 2-3 that are EXACTLY the same. Now in GTA IV I think R* made a huge leap. I still walk the streets of LC today and although the clones are still present (to some degree) it's a bigger improvement over the old games. Typically repeated peds wore different clothes to compensate making it less noticeable. My question is do you think we can come to expect more unique ped models in GTA V? It's probably impossible to make EVERY ped 100% unique, but what do you guys think? How hard can it be, really? They just need a system that registers which ped model is already on-screen and not use that one again unless you're going to a different area. You'd just need a hell of a lot of ped/clothing models...  But, as you said, in IV this ped situation was improved greatly. Now they really need to fix the carspawning thing, which has been ridiculous throughout the series tbh. But was very handy when trying to find extra models of your cool/exclusive car But very ridiculous if you're driving an Infernus and there are 7 other Infernus' behind you lol. CheesyJ
I think that while it could be improved on even more, we did take big leaps to getting rid of this problem in GTA 4. Â Remembering back to some of the very old GTA games, there were very few ped models and it wouldn't take long until you were seeing the same ones over and over again. This does eventually happen in GTA 4, but there are a lot more peds out there and it's not as easy to find the same ones. Â I don't think it's something that they can ever really do, when talking about having all peds being 100% unique. They can continue to improve it, however you can't expect them to literally create hundreds of thousands of different models in all honesty. It would take way too long, and it would probably take up too much space as well.

Capricornus
I reckon we would see less Madden peds in GTA V. I have a good feeling about this. Seeing the same peds next to each would be very rare. Â Â
USAPatriot
Because of game restrictions, tech restrictions, and the fact that they can not spend forever designs pedestrians, you will never see 100% unique pads. Live with it . . . even though you all have. To think they can even make 100% unique is flawed and won't happen. Common sense people. Â They did a great job in IV with hundreds of peds, and even more when the mix and matched clothing. It gave a nice allusion. I am sure they will have even more pedestrians and clothing patterns to look even more unique on the streets. They do a good job.
Member#1
It's not the variety of faces and clothes I'm concerned about. GTA IV was a leap forward compared to the III-era. Like I mentioned in the trailer analysis thread, it's the size of peds that bothers me a little. They're all the same height! No baskerball players, no jockeys. I do believe there's a slight difference between men and women though. This has always been the case in GTA games and the trailer seems to show GTA V will be the same. To me it makes the crowd look unrealistic. I would like to see more variety in height of peds to make the city more lifelike (and no, I don't want children in the game). Â Regarding the trailer, apparently there's less obesity in LS than in LC aswell.
IBrahemoX1X
Making a lot more ped models would be a leap comparable to the jump from Vice City to San Andreas as far as content goes. I also hope they try to make the vehicle spawning problem better. But if you look in the first trailer, there's always unique cars and there's not a single one that's the same model. maybe this a sign that GTAV , will have a less CLONES , and CAR'S SPAWINIG PROBLEM .
