Canada:

1. We mostly have the same cultures and customs as the US but we are differnt

2. We had the 3rd largest navy of allied nations in WWII (behind the US Navy and British Navy) but now it is lower down on the list because the liberals (Pierre Trudeau) ruined it

3. We once had the most advanced fighter/bomber ever made (at the time) called "The Avro Arrow" but it was destroyed over fear that missiles would replace planes.

4. We have 9% of the worlds fresh water

5. We have a ton of resources and fossil fuels (from Alberta Oil Sands and the Arctic)

6. We have a strong economy

7. We are the second largest country

8. We have the 8th highest life expectancy at 81 years

9. Alert, in Nunavut is the northern most permantant settlement in the world

10. James Naismith (A Canadian) Invented basketball

11. We have the longest coastline in the world at 151,600 miles

12. We have 60% of the worlds lakes

13. We have over 2 million lakes

I live in the US... hmm... the modern day United States used to be made up of English (later British), Spanish, French, and yes, even Swedish colonies. Eventually the Swedish got kicked out, and in 1763 after the seven years war, the French also got thrown out, and the Spanish got their territory. Then after that war, the British began to enforce different mercantilist policies, many of which were previously ignored under salutary neglect. These pissed off the colonists who had previously enjoyed a relatively autonomous lifestyle. The taxing wasn't a big issue really as we paid 1/5 of what the people in Britain paid, but the central issue was the slow eroding of our autonomy. Then we had a revolution which we won mostly due to an excellent performance by American generals in the Battle of Saratoga, which prompted the French and Spanish to join the war to help us. Then we became independent, I could sit here typing this for like an hour but our economy was propped up thanks to Hamilton, then we had the War of 1812 when we used impression of American soldiers as a reason to take Canada.. that failed pretty miserably, then there was some sectionalist conflict, especially over extending slavery into the new territories we took from newly independent and weak Mexico.. we had some deals with Spain and we got Spanish Florida, though that was before the Mexican American war... more manifest destiny, then after the civil war, the frontier closed in the 1890s and the next frontier was overseas... we took Islands in the pacific and began American imperialism, different from the British and French in that we exercised dominance of countries behind the scenes. We did take the Philippines and Puerto Rico from Spain though, then there was the progressive era where corporations that were abusing people the way things are happening in places like China or Malaysia today were reigned in, then we had World War I, then there was the 20s and the Great Depression, new deal era legislation that kept our economy at full steam through the 20th century were repealed by Reagan and his f*cking dickass cohorts, causing the meltdown we had a few years ago.. then there was World War II, by the way, which we caused the war to tilt back in favor of the allies after our joining, we saved Britain from being taken, the Soviets fought from the East and the British, Canadians, Australians, etc. along with Free French forces fought into Germany, then the war ended. Then I'm done typing now so great.

Anyway, now we're the most powerful country and though we had a severe crisis due to deregulation of the financial sector, I really am hopeful that things will continue to turn around.

England

Firstly, most English people cannot stand warm beer

Secondly, there is no such thing as a 'British accent' - someone from Glasgow sounds completely different to someone from Bristol

Thirdly, England and Britain are not interchangeable terms - England is part of Britain which is part of the UK

Fourthly, Mohammed was not the most used baby name in 2010, and England is not being taken over by Muslims - in the 2001 census they totalled 2.97% of the population - meaning 97.03% of England's population were not Muslims

Fifthly, there are many English accents that are not cut glass/Queen's or cockney geezer

Sixthly, England - by far the most diverse part of the UK - is not 'overrun' by immigrants - here's a pie chart showing the estimated make-up of the population of England in 2009:

user posted image

Finally, Fosters lager is more popular here than in Australia

Edit - while we generally like the USA, we aren't America's bitch

The amount of times I've argued with people about that point is ridiculous. That's the one stereotype of British people I cannot stand, that no matter where in the UK you are from we all supposedly sound like rich snobs.

There is no such thing as an English or British accent. The closest you can get is a simple "posh accent" used by who I call the "weird rich".

Also, I find this video very entertaining:

Representing America here's some background on the regions

Someone on here said that every state is almost like their own country (Culturally) but I'd have to disagree slightly. California for example is really two different regions, with Southern California having a distinct culture and feel to it than Northern California which could easily be part of Oregon and Washington culturally north of San Francisco. Las Vegas is a world unto itself. When looking at a map you'd think Arizona and New Mexico would be similar but in fact they're very different. Arizona is a xenophobic place on the path of having a majority Hispanic population soon, while one of New Mexico's official languages is already Spanish. Further north Utah is almost all Mormons, a quasi-christian group. Colorado is a weird place because it's a mix of white working class in small towns like you see on South Park and larger urban areas. The states north of that are all interchangeable to be honest, (Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota) largely because of a lack of real population. They are all poor meth using farm/ranching states that love guns and God.

Texas is an amazing place, it's basically the new California with most jobs and migration going there. I personally love the place, it's diverse and yet still a unique style of Anglo cowboy culture that on first glance doesn't make sense considering 80 percent of the population lives within or around Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston. It's basically a mirror of the United States in many ways. Houston is larger than most other cities in the United States and a pretty liberal place. Some suspect Texas will become more liberal and democratic with more Hispanics moving in...those predictions are probably right.

Then you have the rest of the old south places like Arkansas, Southern Missouri, Louisiana, Most of Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Northern Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina These places are still the most uneducated, religious and racist parts of our nation but they are also the largest centers for job growth due to good labor laws. In any case not much has really changed outside of the major metro areas. You'll still see confederate flags, and interracial marriage is still taboo. Tolerance has finally reached the old south to the point that blacks are even moving back. I personally hate the weather of most of the South and the mosquitoes are bitches.

The rest of Florida is different with massive Hispanic populations, it's major tourist state, and at the same time it's also been a focus point of the downturn. Honestly so many of you all love Vice City and have learned so much about the place I need not go on. The last two "southern states" is the rest of the Missouri (Basically the metro areas along the I-70) and much of Virginia these days. Missouri is the state I was born in and in honesty I want to die here. I can't put my finger on why I love this place so much but even after going to Texas, California, Florida and New York I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Partly because Kansas City is just a stable mid sized city connected with the world and yet without the sh*ttier aspects that larger cities like Chicago or New York have (like traffic for example).

The parts of Virginia in the Washington D.C area have basically become parts of the Northeast. I still have more regions to touch on and I guess I'll edit this later.

Once upon a time Ireland was only known as the “Island of Saints and Scholars”, nowadays, fortunately, we’re known for so much more. We have A-list Hollywood actors, world-class pop rock musicians, top authors, Guinness, some of the world’s most stunning scenery and even a claim to the White House! Read on for more…

Famous symbols of Ireland…

The harp, also known as the national symbol of Ireland, the Celtic cross, the shamrock and the Irish wolfhound are all well known Irish symbols.

Religion…

The majority of the Irish population are Roman Catholic (88%).

National language…

Gaelic is Ireland’s national language. Only in the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) areas of Ireland will you find that Irish is used as the everyday language. In all other parts of Ireland, English is the spoken language.

Music…

Ireland’s most famous musical export would have to be U2, closely followed by The Boomtown Rats, Thin Lizzy and more recently Boyzone and Westlife.

Hollywood factor…

The cream of the crop includes Richard Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Cillian Murphy and Colin Farrell.

The world of literature…

To our credit, Ireland has produced Bram Stoker, James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, Maeve Binchy and Celia Aherne.

Patron Saint…

Saint Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland in around 430. St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland, and indeed all over the world, on March 17th.

Our capital – Dublin…

Dublin was founded by the Vikings in 988 and was originally called Dubh Linn (which means Black Pool in Irish).

First Saint Patrick’s Day parade…

Boston was the proud host with an event organised by the Charitable Irish Society in 1737.

The White House…

James Hoban, a Kilkenny born architect, won a competition to design the original White House.

Famous outlaws…

Grace O’Malley (Queen of the Pirates) operated off the west coast of Ireland and Ned Kelly (son of an Irish convict) was an infamous Australian outlaw.

Highest mountain…

Killarney, County Kerry is home to the highest mountain – Carrantouhill, part of the mountain range the McGillycuddy Reeks.

Longest river…

The river Shannon rises in County Cavan and is approximately 240 miles long. It contains 3 lakes, Lough Allen, Lough Ree and Lough Derg.

Irish delicacies…

Drisheen is a type of pudding made from cow’s, pigs or sheeps blood. White pudding is a mixture of pork, cereal, bread, fat and suet. Periwinkles are sea snails boiled in salted water.

Guinness…

To trip to Ireland would be complete without sampling a pint of the black stuff! It’s said that no matter where you go in the world, only in Ireland will you be served the most velvety, and creamiest pint of the “black stuff”.

Bailey’s Irish Cream…

This hugely popular liquor has been around since the ’70′s.

Irish pubs…

Stumble upon a “trad night”, throw in the customary singsong, a bit of Irish dancing and you’re in for a crackin’ evening!

A sporting nation…

Irish people are very passionate about Gaelic games – football, hurling, rounders, handball and camogie. Rugby and soccer are also very well supported in Ireland.

You might be referring to my post. Oh and I totally hear you on how the states can even differ within. Here in Pennsylvania the area between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia is sometimes referred to the Arkansas zone since the people and their subcultures are drastically different.

I was trying to be a bit more general, but din't really have the energy to try and convey what I was thinking. Where I live a motorcycle helmet is not required, but 10 minutes away in the state of Delaware it is required. I can unknowingly cross the border and get arrested since each state has and enforces their own laws.

I agree with you on this completely, Bob. Northern Virginia has been my second home since half of my family moved here when I was a baby. I now go to school in DC and I find that Northern Virginia is very much like back home in Long Island, NY. If you go south in Virginia, it's still pretty Northeast feeling. Once you go past Richmond though, things change and you end up in the true 'south' again. Then you reach Charlotte/Raleigh in NC and it's liberal again. But f*ck once you get out of NC, you're not going to find many liberal areas other than on the coasts down in the deep South.

Los Santos Pedestrian

My last name comes from Lithuania. Some facts about that country:

1. Land area is 25,174 sq. miles

2. Population is 3,199,342 in 2011, down from 3,483,972 in 2002

3. Lithuania has the second-highest suicide rate in the world, trailing after Japan.

And, that's all I can really say about it, since nothing of importance really came from that country. <foreveralone>

So, I was thinking the other day... GTAForums has members of hundreds of different countries, interacting with each other while using the website not just to discuss Grand Theft Auto or gaming, but general topics. I thought it would be good to make a topic where members could share more about where they are from, allowing other members to learn more about the world they live in, and hopefully end ignorance to other cultures and etc.

Post whatever you feel about your country. Anything about the geography, politics, culture, traditions, interesting facts and etc. Yeah, you can find most of this on Wikipedia, but who the hell is gonna research some random country on Wikipedia when getting this info from someone who actually is from that region. Please include things you won't find in a Wikipedia page and well... anything that can make this thread a learning experience.

I know we have tons of people from the UK and the US, but you may discuss the region you live, and etc.

Well, I'll start:

I am from Brazil, the south, near Uruguay. Unlike the common belief that Brazilians are basically black, and of African descent, Brazil is 60% white. Pretty much as much as the US. Brazil has tons of European immigrants, especially Italian, Portuguese and German towards the south. The north of the country basically is made up of brown people, mixtures of caucasian and black. (By the way, we don't speak Spanish, we speak Portuguese. Most people don't know that.)

It's a very multi-cultural country. We got natives in the Amazons, black people in the Northeast and really white mothaf*ckers in the south (like me). The country is warm, but many times it depends on the region since it's the 5th biggest country in the world. In the most populated region, the southeast, temperature has an average of 25 degrees Celsius, falling to about 19-20 in the winter. The north/northeast is very warm and ranges from 25-36 degrees Celsius around the year. The south, where I come from, is warm in the summer, and really, really f*cking cold in the winter. Around 6 degrees Celsius, sometimes going to 0, which to many North Americans and Europeans is quite a good temperature, except houses here don't have internal heating so you're freezing your ass off during the night.

I don't wanna say too much about Brazil because I know there are many of us on GTAF. I hope this topic becomes a nice educational experience for all of us.

oooo, Brasil!

I'm not a huge fan of our country, you may know the reasons, but it's nice to see people from our country in this forum.

Where do you live in Brazil?

you're also famous for your tullips and clogs...and for some reason we call you cheeseheads...so maybe your country has something to do with cheese? tounge.gif

ohh...and Heineken is from your country, I think everyone knows heineken smile.gif

----

now, Belgium...we're south from the Netherlands, we're rather small, I guess only Andorra, Monaco and Luxemburg are smaller than us...we're supposed to be neutral in case of international conflicts (or something like that...)

we're a complicated country in general, regarding politics (world record of longest time without a government is in our hands), our country is divided in 2 parts, flanders and errrm..wallonië, flanders is where they speak dutch (or flemish, which is a kind of substitute for dutch, pretty much the same, just a different pronounciation)

we speak three official languages, french, dutch and german (ohh yes)

we have a big harbour (Antwerp), once the biggest of Europe, now beaten by the Netherlands

we're the capital of Europe (Brussels, kind of, along with Den Haag)

Known for chocolate and beer, especially beer (we have the best beer in the world, westvleteren!)

Stella is from our country...it's about as widespread across the globe as Heineken

most of us think Heineken tastes like piss

that's about it...also, sh*tty weather, but I guess that's not determined by borders...

Portugal:

It has an area of 35,645 sq miles.

It uses euro as currency.

It is often thought to be a province of Spain.

And a video with many Portuguese inventions. It was made against Finland as they did not want to help Portugal. You can just see the video. No offense against Finnish people.

There's a list of Canadian inventions on this Wiki page. There's a few I already knew of, but some that I thought were interesting.

Also, the guy who first mapped the brain, Dr. Wilder Penfield, although he was American-born, he did all his work in Canada, so we like to take credit for his accomplishment there. He actually has a Heritage Minute on television.

About Italy

• We were first unified as a country in the 19th century in 1861 I beleive, Thanks to Garibaldi.

• A lot of Italians don't wear seat-belts when they drive (Don't ask me why, I asked my uncle and he said they were annoying) God help him.

• Pizza was invented in Naples, roughly around 1860's I think. (Yes they took little bits from other cultures, but we officially invented the dish and named it, Americans or Russian or whoever did not invent it) dozingoff.gif

• Our Italian flag was inspired by the French one in the Napoleonic wars.

• The thermometer is an Italian invention.

• 20% of the Italian south is unemployed (Almost 10% now for the whole country)

• Life expectancy for your average Italian is 79 years old (I didn't know that)

• The Piano is Italian

• Christopher Colombus was "Italian" but really back then he would have been known as "Genoese"

• Italy is the 4th most visited country in the world.

• Organized crime controls roughly 10% of our GDP ( sad.gif )

• More on crime ( sad.gif ) Italy has four different Mafia groups, Cosa Nostra, Camorra, Ndrangheta and Sacra Corona Unita earning 140 billion dollars annually.

• Italy has had 60 governments since WWII

• Italy has the highest number of cultural sites recognized by UNESCO world Heritage

• Italian has many, many dialects.
