We know that GTA V will have some of the biggest maps ever. However, how the map will be "isolated", aka, where will it end? Before GTA III, all maps were landlocked by buildings. From GTA III to IV, all maps have used the "endless desert" technique. GTA III, though, used a slightly different technique. There was, in Shoreside Vale, an impassable mountain, with a blocked off tunnel which made the map feel as if it were part of something much bigger.

However, there have been rumors that this time, in V, things may be different. Considering that the map and geography of San Andreas was rather unrealistic, this replica of the West Coast will likely be far more different. In real-life L.A., there is the Mojave Desert to the east. South of it are two major cities, San Diego and Tijuana. There is a good chance these cities will be featured. North of L.A. are some mountains and grasslands.

In my opinion, I would like to see the endless terrain this time. From the east it should be an endless desert based on the Mojave Desert, to the North should be endless grasslands, past Tijuana should be endless desert, and the Pacific Ocean should be endless to the west.

Personally I see nothing wrong with endless ocean. To me, the feeling of flying out to sea makes me feel as if we're not constricted to the map, if you get what I mean. With the other voting options, that'd make me feel very locked-in. Not necessarily the infinite desert option, although it'd look a little stupid to see endless desert if you 'travel' far enough.

Can you imagine endless terrain??

Just cruising in the desert forever in a BF or Bandito.

It would make my day.

What would be funny though would be a sign 30 minutes in that said "you traveled all the way here and thought you'd see something?".

That would make me smile.

Endless terrain.

It's time to try something new. It'd be nice to feel connected to a larger world rather than an improbable island in the middle of nowhere.

I would like some endless landmass, it would be awesome tearing through the desert in pretty much anything.

But also water.

If they can make this work i'm sure it'll be good.

As long as its endless and not restricted then I will be happy with it although tbh I would just prefer the classic endless ocean.

If it is not some sort of endless than I am going to throw the game down on the ground and stomp on it. Then I am going to call R* Support and complain about it to them.

Endless terrain. That way, you can get the best of both worlds. If you wanted to, you could take an aircraft, but you could also take an Infernus, or Duke and go for a ride in the nothingness.

I would like that.

Endless desert on one side and sea on the other to show the city is contented to some kind of mass land other then just a floating island middle of nowhere. o.o Someways doing an endless desert is the same as ocean, just rise the ground above the sea level ta-da. o3o

Yeah. Give me endless desert/terrain over an endless ocean any day. Some times I just wanna drive on endlessly, no turns, no obstacles in my way, just never ending terrain ahead of me.

GRINCH ASS BITCH

I'd like a combination of the endless deserts, grasslands, and mountains + the endless sea on one side. I'd also like to see an island out in the water (like Catalina Island) that is only reachable via plane/helicopter/boat or ferry.

Now that you mention it, I've never actually thought of endless grassland. That'd be something nice to roam around in.

combination, endless ocean to the west, endless terrain to the east. Would look pretty good high up.

Makes me wonder why they've never done it before.

Is it harder to create than water???

I think it would be. They'd probably include different random landscape merges to make it look more organic or real, vs lots of the same water.

I'm not entirely sure how many of you are aware of such an elusive piece of information, but in San Andreas, if you flew out of the map across the sea for a good twenty or so minutes, crashed into the water, then respawned in Los Santos then the game would enter a mode where gang territories would be stretched across not just LS but SF and LV too. Just something to remember should anybody believe the whole endless ocean approach never did anything for anybody!

Regardless, I think the whole closed highways concept could work given LA's proximity to the San Andreas Fault. Should there be a border to Mexico, reason for that being closed could simply be attributed to the recent influx of DEA raids and such involving border-based drug cartels or other aspects of security surrounding that. As for how following the land would go on the maps borders though, it may look a little strange...

DESERT X INFINITY.

The ocean was such an immersion killer in IV. Every time I'd see the western coast of Alderney, or northern coasts of Algonquin and Bohan, the realization that it's all fake really kicked in.

It wasn't even that bad in past games. III had the impassable mainland, Vice City felt too tropical for the ocean to break the mood, and San Andreas cleverly hid the coasts in the third section with hills and mountains. IV failed in making its barrier feel natural.

Endless terrain is not designed, it's generated by an algorithm. No artistic merit. I predict a 0% probability that Rockstar North would do it.

Algonquin Assassin

I'm perfectly fine with the traditional method. Most of the time I forgot SA was just a huge island. It was so dense and vast (for its time) I didn't even give it a 2nd thought that I was just surrounded by endless ocean.

As much as I loved GTA IV as someone said the immersion of the environment was generally lost especially when you took up a helicopter. Even GTA III felt like it was attached to land mass with that chunk of land behind Shoreside Vale.

I think that GTA V's map will be so dense and vast R* could give it a traditional island map setting that you would barely notice half the time.

So endless ocean for me. Like it's always been.

It was passable, there was an endless ocean behind (and Ghost Town).

Whoever voted for landlocks, invisible borders and such... no, just no. If this is gonna happen, this kills the GTA.

I voted for endless sea. But an endless desert would be nice too.. even better, because I could drive all the way instead with a boat.

I think both options willl be present in the game. On the one side, endless water and on the other side - behind mountains maybe - endless desert/country.

LS completely surrounded by desert is impossible and unrealistic, of course.

So it's either both or just endless sea around the map.

Endless desert worked in skyrim, doesn't seem much different to endless ocean.

Endless sea. Its much more fun online, cause you have restrictions and risks while driving at the airport etc. If it would be an endless desert your opponent or you could just take of into the desert going way too far away from the rest of the people. Also you opponent can easily escape than, cause with one good manouvre he's off into an open terrain with not much restrictions.

The impassable mountains is a bad idea cause.. I wanna climb them -.-'. It would be pretty eppic if you could have online fights on a mountainroad like the one in SA.

I really don't see an open terrain happening, there has to be some restrictions in a GTA online. With water everyone stays close to the shore. And you have boats..

Non-Interesting Version

Endless desert/water/both

Interesting Version

They could just make it so that if you go out to far into an endless desert you drop dead and have a heart attack, 2 weeks later your wife starts f*cking that manly man from the trailer who wears the suit and they f*ck each other all the time as your children become the next generation you because they grew up with no father.

endless desert by a mile, would look awesome and be cool flying low in a fighter jet!

Great for role play scenario as well. I hope its a real desert though, not like what we saw in RDR.
