The bottom line of this is that when GTA was closer to an "annual" franchise the best GTA's were made. Vice City was what? Only 7 months after 3. San Andreas (in my opinion the best GTA) was only a year or so from what I remember and the day after SA came out GTA Advance also came out.

I can't use Wiki to check this (BECAUSE IT'S BLACKED OUT, OMGSH) but I believe the releases went something like: III (2001), Vice City (2002), San Andreas (2004). It very well could have been seven months between III and Vice City, but San Andreas was probably closer to a year and a half to two years.

 

Anyway, I see what you're saying, but think about the leap in detail, both gameplay- and graphic-wise, that IV introduced. That's why they made it a legit numbered sequel instead of a subtitled sequel. It's in a completely different era. They redefined the genre they popularized and they did it extremely well. It was also the first to be made on the new console era, so they had some technical issues to iron out. With V, since it's another numbered entry, I think it will be another leap forward for the series in terms of innovation. I'm thinking by the time it gets here we'll know why it took so long.

 

The waiting is tough, I know, but I think the solution is for fans to start doing other things in the meantime and check up on the game maybe a few times a month instead of refreshing GTAForums every five minutes of every day.

And that's the real problem isn't it? Because it's not just me who wants V right now. It's also 20 million consumers who regularly buy Grand Theft Auto. I could see if I was a lone wolf out of 7 billion people, and everyday I came on here demanding GTA V right now and no one else cares, but that's not the world we live in. So you aren't annoyed that Rockstar releases so little info? I'm a big gta fan myself and I like the other games that Rockstar makes aswell but I'd love it if rockstar released some new info.

I can understand that some people are upset and I don't agree with how some react but to some point I can understand them.

You know how GTA IV was delayed seven months? That was to actually put more content into it and fix everything. If Rockstar went and released it that early, we'd have a sh*tfest of glitches and the game freezing, along with a much larger lack of content.

 

If you work for six years on the RenderWare engine and then suddenly go to the RAGE engine, it's R*'s equivalent of going from the dark all night into broad daylight. It takes a while to adjust. Remember GTA III? It had a huge lack of content after the storyline, so did Vice City. That was due to them being used to a 2D perspective GTA. Rockstar finally put a lot of content into San Andreas. A good game with all the features to make you as a fan completely satisfied takes time.

My question is, assuming RAGE is going to be used again for GTA V, why is it taking so long? It seems odd that less time elapsed from GTA SA to GTA IV than GTA IV to GTA V, simply because GTA V's engine should be in place for the most part.

The sad part is that things didn't use to be like this. Back in the 3 era they were cranking out and focusing on GTA, now and days they're wasting time on bullsh*t like Table Tennis, Max Payne, and Noire.

They arent wasting their time making them games as they are in different studios. Table Tennis was basicly Rockstar testing out the RAGE engine, LA Noire was only helped out and published by Rockstar, the main work was done by Team Bondi, Rockstar just made sure that TB actually made the game and to a good standard, as for Max Payne 3, that was quite a popuar game back in the day so in what way are they wasting time with that. Now all 3 of them games as far as I know had 0% input from Rockstar North, therefore the only game that has slowed GTA V down is Agent. Now GTA V is going to be Rockstar's biggest and most ambitious game yet (said from their own mouths that is) so just because we have so far almost waited 3 years since the last GTA disk release it doesn't mean that they aren't focusing on GTA at Rockstar North anymore, infact I would say its the opposite, they are strongly focusing on GTA as Agent hasn't had any news from R*N while GTA has had a trailer and a statement. Have you heard of the saying too many cooks spoil the broth, well the same goes for games, too many developers spoil the game, so the studios behind TT (a game that came out before GTA IV for christ sake, hell it came out before vice city stories came out) Max Payne 3 and LA Noire (not even a Rockstar Studio so they wouldnt even have had any part in GTA V anyway) all working with R*N would probably have cauaused GTA V to just fail miserably.

With V, since it's another numbered entry, I think it will be another leap forward for the series in terms of innovation.

And you know maybe it will be that big of a leap, and demand this much time taken, but to be honest I don't see that happening. If I'm found wrong, great they've revolutionized gaming, but once again I doubt this will be that leap. That said let's say GTA Next was released when L.A. Noire was, that would of been perfect. We would of just finished off all the Red Dead Redemption and they wouldn't have the excuse of having to make a new engine. I can accept the long wait between SA and IV because

 

A. We got 3 GTA games in between

B. SA was huge anyway

C. They had to make a new engine

 

But there is no reason for them to have to make a new engine. For the GTA after IV it should of been as simple as doing what they did with Vice City. Change the location, change characters, change time period, add new stuff to do, change a few game mechanics: BLAM new GTA. And maybe it is time for them to expand staff or something because they're getting like Valve when it comes to these damn waits.

They're focused on May Payne 3, because they want to give GTA a rest for a while. Like if you like 30 Rock for a while but then realize you've only been watching reruns and want to wait for new episodes.

 

GTA San Andreas took more than twice the time to develop, which was about two years. Vice City only took eight months. Vice City was rushed and had little content, San Andreas took its time and had a huge f*ckload of it. They're probably doing this with V. But I have no official info.
