Rhoda
When I was at school we were not allowed to use Wikipedia, though we all did anyway. I remember in college, I was rushing with a piece of work and pretty much just copied a few lines here and there to flesh it out. When it came to marking, the tutor had actually looked at the common pages for the article and picked out the lines I'd used. She had a quiet word with me and said using it is fine, but I have to offer my own interpretation to show further understanding. I knew that of course, but I felt so ashamed afterwards and made a point to only use it if I was stuck. It's not as reliable as it looks. On topic though I am glad the big websites are standing up against this and helping raise awareness. I am just waiting too see what "anonymous" has in store for this, I am not expecting anything spectacular but I am interested. I read an article on Flipboard this morning that Anonymous were planning to completely butt-f*ck Sony out of money by having three groups of elite hackers work on three different areas, one of which is removing the paying element from their PSN online store, essentially rendering their goods free. It sounds a little too good to be true, but Anonymous have warned they have roots in the PSN server still and can do what they wish. I think it's a load of hot air personally, but you never know. Mark
For assignments, it's usually a good place to start. Read the article, check the citations. Search through them even more. Dig up original papers. THEN start to form an essay. Cheers nlitement, gonna spend some time reading it now there's f*ck all traffic. May even troll a few pages. ED: See above really. DeeperRed
Amateur slackers cite wikipedia as a source. Real slackers know to cite the citations from the "References" section on the wikipedia page. And that is how I got 97% on my A level history coursework. At least 3 people I know of put wikipedia as an actual reference in the bibliography. @ Craig Why is Sony the target, have they got a big stance on the SOPA or are anonymous too lazy to find another target. GTA_stu
I remember I was doing an essay one time that had to be in the next day, and it was about 5 AM. I was just so knackered and I couldn't be arsed to find a long list of references, so I just used wikipedia as my one and only reference. Aaaah the look on my tutor's face. na89340qv0n34b09q340
The blackout page loads after the actual page, so hit escape to stop the page from loading, or use firefox with noscript.
coin-god
Has any of you tried reading what Wikipedia says? Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way? Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout. We just want to make sure you see our message. lil weasel
F*cking america, thinking they own the god damn world. As I see it the American's will merely stop the other countries from being accessed, simular to what I've heard China doing now. Except instead of everything it will only be the 'copyrighted material'. You don't really believe that the U.S. FBI will knock on your door because You have Warez games, do you? darthYENIK
They want to take away the rights of the many to benefit the wallets of the few. No bueno. Anyone hear about how someone hacked the RIAA and found they have a sh*t ton of illegally downloaded copyrighted material. And instead of doing the smart thing and saying they're doing it to research how it's done and stop it, they said, "Uh... uhhh... someone must have hacked us!" Sorry, it wasn't a hack, it was some sort of back trace from various bootlegging websites, completely legit, and apparently what the RIAA uses. But they traced the IPs back to the RIAA headquarters or something like that. I'm not 100% sure on it, since I heard about it on morning talk radio sometime last week. BabeRuth
http://en.wikipedia.org I went to check on something this morning, only to find I couldn't access my favourite site that I use on a daily basis... Guess we are gonna have to dig out our old copy of Microsoft Encarta... The English (en.wikipedia.org) version of Wikipedia is only offline if you have javascript enabled, if you need to access the website temporarily blocking javascript in your browsers prefrences will enable you to view the site. Just so you know wikipedia is not the best site for info. It can be edited, just letting you in on a note.

K^2
There is a hit-and-miss workaround. The page you are looking for will load, then a split second later the blackout notice will load. If you hit esc just after the article page loads you can still view the page. You just have to search for the page you need through Google or whatever to find the page first. There is a much better way. Open FireFox. Go to options. Disable JavaScript. Open Wikipedia. Enjoy. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns. Fozzy Fozborne
I worked today and we got soooo many calls including "Um, like why isn't Wikipedia working???" and "You guys suck! K^2
This is slightly off topic, but it seems like a good place to drop this. With support of gaming community this can actually do more than blackouts. Kyle F
Still, the U.S Government are trying to take away our rights to access free information on the Internet...and their obviously trying to get other country governments to join them, which should not happen. The U.S is an INDIVIDUAL country, like all others, and should not try to takeover things or block things for other countries. Obviously if this all goes through, the whole world wide web will be filtered by the U.S "Webfilter"...its completely stupid. Yes, I see their purpose in trying to stop people from using copyrighted material, but that means sites like facebook, youtube, google etc will have filtered searches, facebook and youtube will be blocked and most probably taken down... Even though Anonymous are planning to takedown facebook on the 28th of January and 12:00 AM Eastern time...
