The SS Costa Concordia's Captain is a coward f*ck. Firstly not listening to orders, then fleeing the sinking ship before everyone else.

I hope the captain gets more than 12 years, f*ckin' prick.

"Let me just leave and grab a taxi home while everybody fights for their lives or dies, eh whatever."

Does anyone remember the Andria Doria, no I guess not as it happened well before you all were born.

The Andrea Doria collided with The Stockholm in dense fog 12 miles off the coast of Nantucket.

It's in my book, Astonishing Tales of the Sea. 51 people died.

Anyway, the Costa Concordia's captain is a real cowardly piece o' sh*t. A poor excuse for a ship captain and a human being.

I remember reading in the news this morning that the Captain was on a lifeboat while people were still escaping and an officer from the Italian Coast Guard forced the Captain to board his ship again to oversee the evacuation. Apparently he also gave him a good yelling, too.

Creed Bratton

I heard a story that the captain wanted to get as close as he could to an island that is the birthplace of one of the waiters. If that's the case then he's even more retarded than an 83 year old Asian woman trying to run for US president.

I see that the captain has never heard the term:

"The captain always goes down with his ship."

He isn't supposed to flee like a damn coward. mad.gif

When I was in my flight back from Milan to Brazil, I met a family that was in the ship. They were wearing donated clothes, the wife's shoes were half the size of her own foot haha. They said that the evacuation was really unorganized, they said they stayed in the island for the first night without the company actually sending aid. Out in the cold, without anything. Carnival Cruise Lines is definitely gonna go bankrupt with all the reparations they're gonna pay to the passengers.

I didn't see this when I posted mine, but I'd just seen an update on the topic, the current one, link to Wiki is kinda blocked it seems

Better title by a long shot (mine). The Captain didn't return to the ship despite the stern radio warnings, He was trying to impress people on the shore by cutting the land closer then normal, similar to a "fly by".

That's it? I thought it was, like, a thousand!

That's no tragedy! How many people do you lose on a normal cruse? 30? 40? wink.gif

In all honesty, I still can't believe this guy just abandoned ship like that. He better be locked up for a long time.

My reference to Andrea Doria was for the reports by the passengers of the way the Italian Crew members reacted, not the size of the disaster.

But in common was the inability of launching the Life Boats, as it also capsized.

And also, take note that AD was hit by the Stockholm, which has an Ice Breaker reinforced Bow.

My main question is if the captain was having dinner with this women when it happened and he instructed her to goto deck 3! I thought the reason they were so close to land was to salute the old chef! i want to know how the captains going to salute him from the dinning room? something doesnt add up!

After any disaster, always listen to what the people say before they have a chance to 'be advised' or think. Anything said after an hour or two will be 'adjusted' for the news media.

As an example: When Obama made his first statement (which I can't find anywhere) while sitting at the TV monitor immediately after the attack.

"We captured Bin ladin and shot him..." Later statements changed.

This story is sick. Must be a pretty dumb captain. I can´t believe that the captain is so dumb. notify.gif

Nothing in this story makes sense. confused.gif

Seems simple enough to me. The Captain did an 'OOPs' and left the area so he wouldn't get blamed.

I remember being told in the last century that when traveling in Italy should your taxi get in an accident to get away as quick as possible because under Italian law you would be held responsible, as it wouldn't have been in the accident if you hadn't hired it to be there.

True or not, it sounds good. smile.gif

A 450 million "Oops!". I think this is a wreck now. I´m curious how they want to get it away from there. Glad that not more people died.

Seeing this 300m ship so close to the shore is ridiculous. Maybe he was used to handle small things.

Now he can change his name into Captain Nemo maybe, looks like he is good in going under water.

Glad that not more people died.

I'm totally with you there.

I really wanted to add some pics from a slideshow I saw the day after this 'accident' but I can't seem to locate it. I swear in most of the pictures the people that were rescued didn't look all that disturbed. Actually, some of the pictures made it seem like it was a fun time.

The reason of this "accident" was also the rescue. Look, with 4000 people on board seeing the pics now it´s bad ass luck that not more drowned I think. Cold water is mostly underrated!

I think the 12 missing Germans are dead and drifted away or stuck somewhere in that ship.

Such thing on wide ocean would have been much worser but there are normally no rocks. bored.gif

That's what did them in.

I am suprised that anyone (except I would expect the Blackgang) was injured, let alone died.

I haven't seen any reports yet on how the damage resulted in the 'ice berg' type gash.

I also understand that these Modern Cruise Ships have an unually shallow draft just so they can access the island 'ports'.

What i don't get is why wasn't the part of the ship that is submerged searched immediately for survivors, i saw it on the news that the part of the ship that's above water was being searched first, surely the logical thing to do would have been to search the submerged section of the ship first, and leave the above water half to other rescue teams.

If they had done that straight away they might have gotten to anyone stuck down there before they drowned, and if there was some health and safety issue nonsense that prevented divers from entering the submerged sections they should have used remote control cameras to search for survivors.

The above water part of the ship wasn't going anywhere, the submerged section should have been the priority of rescue teams.

Not likely. The response teams (including divers) didn't arrive at the wreck until hours after it had capsized. If people were trapped in the underwater parts, they drowned long before response teams were even on site.

I also think you severely underestimate how difficult it is for divers- even experienced military divers- to conduct search and rescue operations in what is akin to a high-rise building in terms of size and number of individual rooms. As a certified diver whose done a number of wreck dives before, I can tell you that even short-distance light-zone intrusions into submerged vessels are incredibly hard to navigate. I imagine there's some kind of planned route through the ship, due to limited breathing gas supplied- they'll have probably set up median points for divers to swap cylinders in between dives (as it's unlikely they'll be able to navigate flooded doorways carrying more than an hour or so's gas)

With ya sivi, if the rescue teams could rescue more people they would, they do their best.

What's so bad about getting on a lifeboat? Alright, maybe if you didn't even attempt to save anyone else, but if i were captain, do what needs to be done to save people, get my personal raft, f*ck the ship! im leaving, then find a nice island retreat.

Rescue teams usually work the easiest saves first for the Press. then they calculate the risk and work on the next layer for the Press. After all that they dig out the the dead as a further show for the Press. And of course the 'miracle' saves make more Press.

An unsaid reality is that Rescue crews arn't in it to risk their life and limb just for Glory. Like any 'stuntmen' they evaluate the situation and take the minimum of risks possible. An injured trained rescue worker is a great expen$e wa$ted.

  • 2 weeks later...

The other day, they reported the capsized ship COULD be resting where it is for a full year, before it can be removed, The main objective is to recover the fuel safely.
