lydianduck
You have a beasty rig, unfortunately this game is a piece of sh*it; Just leave your shadows on 'high', disable night shadows and keep your view/detail distance at around 30.
Exxon
I just tried a few things, the difference between Medium and Very High shadows is somehow zilch for me. Another piece of proof why it's a f*cked up port Just lower your settings, and at some point it'll be fine. Also, use patch 1.0.4.0 if you don't already. Original Light
That is strange. Do you have any mods installed? Have you reinstalled the game? With that rig, you should be able to run it on max with around 60 fps.
luceberg
Actually a quad core cpu at 3Ghz is not all that fast, even if it is an i7. I would overclock it a bit. About 3.6Ghz gives a smooth experience with rare dips below 30fps.

McGTA4
Okay, I m tested CPU and GPU usage then I played the game: CPU Usage 60-75% GPU Usage 60-80% (80-90% flying on helicopter) Maybe broken Windows? I don't reinstall Windows after change video card from Geforce 260 GTX to Radeon 6950 (cleaning drivers I see don't help) Edited January 26, 2012 by McGTA4

Exxon
With a broken game I mean that the game is just already f*cked up by itself, it's just poorly coded. radioman
Also, use patch 1.0.4.0 if you don't already. Actually, since he is using the Steam version, that is nearly impossible, as the Steam version will automatically get updated as soon as you run the game. SlaveZer0 posted a way, but I have been unable to find it, however, it involved quite a bit of work...Just a heads up. But, @OP, Just LOWER ALL the in-game settings to Medium, turn OFF shadows, and set the sliders at 25 or less, and you will have no problems with the game-there is NO reason to run the game above Medium settings, as there really is no difference(besides more resources being used) in that and the Higher settings...Why people think they have to use extremely High settings when the game looks just fine on Medium, in my opinion, is beyond me? As common sense would say that if you want better performance, you should lower the settings to achieve that..there is nothing wrong with the game(even though it has had 7 patches), which means that is was not as good of a port as the previous games, as III and VC only had 1 Patch, and those were pretty much obsolete with newer computer drivers and hardware...and SA's patch was obsolete with the release of V2(and the ONLY reason SA even had a Patch/V2 release was because of the "Hot Coffee" thing, so they could avoid an AO rating, which would have meant A LOT of lost sales, since MOST stores refuse to sell AO rated games-Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target do, so right there would eliminate 3 major retailers(both store and online stores)...Plus the fact that those games(III, VC, and SA) could run on pretty much any computer, as I used to play them on a PC that was below minimum for SA, and still played many a Chain Game rounds with it just fine, specs were: a Laptop with an AMD Sempron 798MHZ, 256mb ram, a VIA/SIS video card w/32 mb vram, and XP Home SP2...So, that right there show the previous games were a lot better port than this one...lol

unc13bud
i don't think its the card so much, as it may be the size of the monitor you are using and turn the shadows to LOW and see if there is any change. good luck.
McGTA4
Why don't add more fps, then I set 800x600? 1920x1080=800x600=same fps
luceberg
That shows that the graphics card is not restricting the game. It would seem that the cpu is doing so.

It would seem that the cpu is doing so. beat me to it. original poster, turn some of those settings down. i think my shadows on my overclocked x4 925 system are set to low anyway... edit: i mean that resolution settings seem to be affected by the amount of memory physically available to the graphics card ie: 256mb = 800x600, 768mb = 1920x1200 Edited January 28, 2012 by unc13bud
