DeeperRed
So I noticed there were no topics discussing the award season which is now upon us. The golden globe has been, not that I really care for those awards. Results here for those interested. I wasn't too impressed really. I havent seen the Artist so I can not judge that but I wasn't exactly blown away as many others seem to be by the descendants (it was a great film but not my cup of tea I suppose). I'm a bit baffled to why Hugo won best director. The fact Drive was not even nominated annoys me, I understand its not award material but ever single shot was a piece of art, "Ides of March" was nominated for directing, it was nothing special. Drive and Warrior were far superior works in the sense of direction. The BAFTA nominations are here Oscars coming on the 24th so there should be some hot debate. I have accepted the fact Drive will not be mentioned in either, nor will Warrior. These to me where the stand out films of 2011 for me, though I haven't seen the Artist yet or A seperation (Dying to see both though). I can appreciate The Descendents for being a great film, though I did not find it a very entertaining watch (In the same way I understand how LOTR trilogy is amazing but personally find it extremely boring) What are others thoughts ? SIKKS66
Even though I haven't seen it yet (I'm going Wednesday with any luck), I'm annoyed Fassbender didn't win for Shame. FASSBENDER FASSBENDER FASSBENDER But no, I'm sure Clooney deserved it last night. Interesting to see Kelsey Grammer and Matt Le Blanc win for their respective shows. I had intended to watch both Boss and Episodes and their Golden Globes wins has only made me want to see them more. Finally, good to see Dinklage win. Without a doubt he stood head and shoulders above what was an already exceptional cast. Roll on season 2!
DeeperRed
I haven't seen Boss so I can't comment on its win, but why the hell was Breaking Bad not even nominated for best tv show, yet American Horror Story and Games of Thrones were ? I mean the other two are fantastic but Breaking Bad is better then both in multiple ways (Obviously this is my opinion) Glad though for the Modern Family win, one of the funniest comedy shows since arrested development. GTA-King
I agree with you about Drive. That movie was so artistically fantastic! Such a shame. It also surprises me that Breaking Bad wasn't even nominated. I think it will be at the Emmy's though because it has won at least one award there each season. Looking forward to the Oscars though! Anybody know when 2012 Emmy's are? Edited January 17, 2012 by GTA-King
Marlowe.
The Golden Globes are a complete joke. Ricky Gervais is clearly the only one that's aware of that. It's a big snooze-fest when he isn't talking. And the TV categories are useless. The Hollywood Foriegn Press don't own TV's, do they? Apart from Laura Dern, Idris Elba and Peter Dinklage, they were all completely wrong. Even the nominations make me sick. Aaron Paul is about as good an actor as anyone on TV at the moment. But the guy from Modern Family is nominated?
SIKKS66
The Golden Globes have been considered a joke for years haven't they? I know The Simpsons make a bunch of GG based jokes. Ditto the Grammy awards. Breaking Bad hasn't won yet, I'd be surprised if it ever did. If the final season is particularly explosive/emotional we might finally see it emerge victorious. To be fair, the show that has continually pipped it to the Emmy is damn good too.
Fnorg
I haven't seen Boss so I can't comment on its win "Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama - Kelsey Grammer" MUST. CONTAIN. NERDRAGE. Seriously, Buscemi, Cranston or Lewis are the clear f*cking winners here. Best damn leading men on television. At least Claire Danes won an award. The average age of the Oscar panel is 65, thats means theres no real influence of the younger crowd. It probably explains why the Oscar last year for director was given to King Speech over Social Network. I know this is going to cause an argument but I found really nothing that special in the direction of King Speech.
DeeperRed
BAFTA'Sare up and ... Drive is there for best film and best director! There is some justice in the world. I doubt it will pry best film from the hand of the Descendent's or The Artist however I believe it has a shot at best Director. mrpain
What is this The Descendents I keep hearing about and why isn't it shown in my country goddammit?! If Sons Of Anarchy or Drive doesn't win anything this year, I'll do something bad. Bad I tell ya!

Fnorg
Should it ever win anything? Off the top of my head I could imagine five other shows that should be nominated over it. It would be a travesty to give it an award when there are far more deserving shows out there. (Homeland, Breaking Bad, Justified, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones.) SIKKS66
Really is a vintage time for TV isn't it? On a tiny side-issue, I'd love to see Eden Sher get more acknowledgement for her portrayal of Sue Heck in The Middle. Even a nomination for Supporting Actress in Comedy would be well earned. Marlowe.
Should it ever win anything? No, "Sons" doesn't really belong in the same breath as the shows you mentioned, but - and I know these actors are nominated in different categories - but seeing the entire cast of Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory nominated (and winning) awards is vomit-inducing. Ryan Hurst deserves some love for that show. And I know, like I said, he's competing in drama, which is a tougher field with many more deserving actors. After the fourth season, though, I think he should be nominated for something... somewhere. Best "supporting" actors: Peter Dinklage, Aaron Paul, Michael Pitt, Giancarlo Esposito, ???? - Ryan Hurst. DeeperRed
Well the Oscars are up, look at the nominations HERE As predicted no love for Drive (Sorry I am like a stuck record but I love this film) which I would of accepted if it wasn't for the appearance of f*cking Extremely Load being nominated. It was an average film, an average pretensions film at that. It didn't even do well with the critics yet somehow it gets nominated over the critically acclaimed Drive. Also I have seen Midnight in Paris despite my hate for the f*cking weirdo that is Woody Allen, it was a decent film, a good film but the direction was nothing special at all. Anyway discuss. Fnorg
Hah, I've only seen Midnight in Paris and I didn't expect it to get any cred at all. I really quite liked it. It wasn't that great a year for movies, I guess.
Robinski
I keep hearing about Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close from award show type and film buffs, but a lot of general/public reception is very mixed, as evidenced by Deeper, above. Any more views on it? I intend to check it out as soon as I can, but I've actually heard very little about it considering it's up for Best Picture. Is it pretentious twaddle? I tend to like prententious twaddle.

I tend to like prententious twaddle. Its not good pretentious twaddle. Acting is very average and it just uses 9/11 for emotional exploitation (a la Remember me) rather then crafting a story (United 93). I also don't understand how a movie can be nominated for Best Movie and not appear in any other category, what exactly makes it the best movie ? mrpain
Should it ever win anything? Off the top of my head I could imagine five other shows that should be nominated over it. It would be a travesty to give it an award when there are far more deserving shows out there. (Homeland, Breaking Bad, Justified, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones.) Normally I would agree with this in the past but I really feel that Season 4 is quality at it's finest. They at least deserve an honorable mention for their superb work of Season 4. Then again, that season was the only brand new season of 2011, along with Dexter but f*ck that, I've watched the entire year. I'm still midway through Season 3 of Breaking Bad and after that I'm gonna go burn through Game Of Thrones and maybe Justified along the way. And Mad Men needs to come by fast. If Sons Of Anarchy or Drive doesn't win anything this year, I'll do something bad. Bad I tell ya! Does Sons ever win anything? It did actually. I think Katey Segal won an award for her role once. No Oscar love for Drive? Just why? Well at the Critics Choice Award, at least I think that's what is called, it was nominated for Best Movie and Best Actor. Good enough eh? Drive even won the Best Action Film there.

DeeperRed
Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill Thats what I thought. Seems the Internet most are displeased about the lack of Drive yet the inclusion of ELIC. f*ck the Oscars, bring on the BAFTA's.
Vanilla Shake
Gary Oldman had better win Best Actor. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was f*cking brilliant and the fact that he's never gotten an Academy Award just baffles me beyond belief. I agree with one of the comments on that site It's bizarre that for so many people, Drive will not only be the film of the year, but the film of their lives. Yet not a single nomination..... I can't really say much though. I've not seen a single film out of those Best Picture nominations, mostly because they are not shown in my country. Midnight In Paris did but I thought that was a generic rom-com movie, damn me. Might go catch The Descendants somehow and hey Hugo has Chloe Grace Moretz! Will catch that too. He's been a poster-boy of Hollywood for years, they'll want to award him as such. Would be ace if Oldman got one though.
DeeperRed
I also must express the hatred I have for the old c*nts who vote the Oscars because they robbed Albert Brooks of a nomination. I am still shocked from last years win of Best Director, Fincher clearly deserved it.
