Kevin...
1) the navy has more jobs what will give you experience in the civilian world and better jobs then the army. 2) the navy gave me more benifits then the army. 3) if they ship me over seas i would only leave for 9 monthes not 12 or more my job is avation mech. and if you want a job that you can get in the civilion world go navy or airforce, if you just want to be infantry go army or marines. thats all i can say the rest is your choice. Really? Stop talking out of your ass. I was a Abrams Tank Systems Maintainer in the Army and an injured vet. I am calling you out on your massive levels of bullsh*ttery. I listen to f*ckers like you rant on and on about how your branch of the military was better than some other branch of the military based only on the fact that you are in the branch you are supporting. You are a douche. If you are going to give advice to someone, try and be a little unbiased instead of coming off as if you are making branch favoritism as obvious as an xbox/ps3 fanboy. I initially intended to go into the Air Force as some sort of aviation mechanic. Also, I had some family in the Air Force at the time so it was kind of appealing to me. One thing led to another and the job I initially wanted in the Air Force wasn't open. I wasn't really in it for the sign-on bonus, I just wanted the job I wanted. I wanted to work on jets, turbines, sh*t like that. I ended up leaving the recruiters office kind of sad and pissed. A few days later, I started "shopping around" I guess you could say. I visited different branches and figured out what kind of jobs they offered that appealed to me and which offered the greatest chance for a civilian turnover of employment. After a few weeks of talking around, I ended up going into the Army as a 63A, Abrams Tank Systems Maintainer. While in, I cross trained into diesel mechanic, Bradly maintenance, and light vehicle maintenance. Unfortunately, due to a grenade accident while cross-training some foreign soldiers on US equipment, I damn near lost my leg at the calf cutting my military career short. Anyways, my point is, each branch offers a lot of different opportunities to you. While one may not be better than the other, one branch may have an even more specialized version of style of trade/job that may be of interest. When it comes to benefits, which the guy I quoted fails to realize, all the branches have the same boss, the US Gov't. Your health, life, family and any supplemental care will be the same across the board. EDIT: GoDK, I see you reading this. Pick up your f*cking phone old man. Ticktock
Well, I can honestly say I f*cked up...... I ended up joining the U.S. Navy right after I graduated high school as an aviation Ordnanceman. I come from a military family and I was gung-ho about joining the army, as both of my brothers were airborne infantry in the U.S. Army, until my brother was killed by an IED in Iraq in 2006. I decided it would be easier on my family to join the Navy, as they rarely see combat and my grandfather was in the navy and my uncle was a nuke chief. I had very good military bearing, Navy and AO pride, and all that until I got to my actual ship. I went on deployment and it was terrible. The food on my ship was sh*tty, we worked everyday, all day. My chain of command is completely sh*tty. I was drinking with a bunch of my first class PO's and a few chiefs on deployment, (I'm 20) but I come home and I had a few beers with them one day and next thing I know they are trying to send me to captains mast. I got out of it because the CMC (Command Master Chief) said that if I was old enough to serve my country, I should be old enough to drink, and my department head got pissed off and now everytime I do the slightest thing wrong he's on my ass and tries to do all he can to get me out. Everyone I work with is trying to get out as soon as possible. Don't join the Navy.
