Cashy
For months now, I've been at a crossroads of whether to join the Army or Navy. I cannot make my mind up. My grandfather was a Sergeant Major in the Army, and my father was a Corporal in the RAF, and they both had the best times of their life. My brothers are in the Royal Marines, and they love it. Army, Air Force, Marine or Navy from any country, can you tell me your experiences?
GTA_stu
Well I personally haven't been in any, but my cousin was in the navy from the mid 80's till the late 90's and he said it was the best time of his life. He got discharged after he suffered an injury which left him death in one ear. I'm not sure on the details, but I think it was something to do with him not wearing the proper protection and standing too close to an artillery cannon. He received some amazing training whilst there though, and it meant he had a lot of options when he came out of the navy. Now he does something to do with fixing and repairing ATM machines which pays surprisingly well, he makes about 50k a year. ----- EDIT to reply to your below post: I'm honestly not sure mate, he lives quite far from me I don't see him very often. I'm pretty sure it was some kind of technical/support/communications type of role, but what in particular I just can't remember. sivispacem
My instinctive reaction is to side for the RAF, but that's because I've got more experience working around people from the RAF. I suppose it depends what you want, really. Where do you want to be, and exactly what do you want to do? What are your aspirations in the forces? Engineering? Analysis? Front-line/combat? Officer training? Der_Don
I served 9 months in the German army and it was the best time I of life so far. I left the army in March 2008 as an Obergefreiter and with a bunch of great memories and new friends. I still have contact with some of them. In fact, we arranged a meeting at the end of february to have a few drinks and to talk about the quality time we had back then.
Oakshaft
Well, I dont have any experience, but if i were to go to the military, I would either go into the airforce (only reason why i cant is because i cant speak french ffs) or the navy. OchyGTA
Why would you need to speak French to join the army? Anyway, I might join as an officer in the Royal Artillery after university, still weighing up my options

Pagelzilla
I'm joining the U.S. Army next week. It's been a long process of filing paperwork and conversations with family, but I'm super excited to start this adventure. I'm going to go into military intelligence - I've heard good things about that path. For one, you'll need to qualify for top secret (or higher) security clearance which is a very marketable addition to your resume. Also, it's one career that will translate well to either business or government civilian jobs. From people I've talked to throughout this enlistment process, the overwhelming trend is that nobody regrets their experiences in the military. It's an extremely honorable thing to do that you'll be able to proudly tell your grandkids one day. I say go for it, man.
AlexGTAGamer
A close friend of our family is joining the British Army this year, he'll be working as a dog handler. Personal experience, I've vowed to myself that the only time I'll join the Army is if there was a third World War.

trip
Allot of my friends and peers spent time in the armed forces - from nam through to the current wars. From what I can discern it sounds like the order of 'coolness' is: -Marines -Air Force -Army -Navy Most of my buddies are marines and honestly, that sounds like the most fun and adventurous out of all the branches. Icarus
OT: Isn't Military service compulsory in the US? How did some of you guys avoid it? Money? When you turn 18, you're required to register with the Selective Service System. If a war does break out, then the draft starts and you might end up going somewhere to fight. Apart from that, like sivi said, it's not mandatory service. [EDIT] Grammar. Edited January 15, 2012 by Icarus

I wouldn't of thought it would be a necessity though, seems quite strange Its only a necessity if you want to become a officer, and a pilot has to go through officer training. (And if I were to go to the airforce it would be to be a pilot, or Aircraft Weapons Systems Technician.) Pilot: http://www.forces.ca/en/job/pilot-32#education-2 The language training is up to 7 months. Edited January 15, 2012 by Oakshaft

Mr.Funny12
I'm in the same position as you. I'm currently 17, getting out of highschool in a year and I have family and friends that have or are joining and I can't seem to find the right place for me. My choices are going to be something probably like Marine MP. Yoiu get to travel all around the world, you get the marine trainning, the benefits, and the title. I think thats a pretty good job also, and afterwards it gives you good chances of getting a security, police, federal or government job afterwards. Secound option for me would be to train as hard as I could and try and join some type of special forces. I know that may sound crazy to some but if I want to join I want to be worth more to the military then just another army recruit, I also want to be on the cooler missions, the better trainning and just the title itself. Glad to see I'm not on my own I thought you go to college after high school in America? (I'm assuming you are American). I thought about the Royal Marines, I'd like to do that, but I don't think I'm cut out for it, plus I'm not the most athletic of chaps, but I think if I spent about 7 months hitting the gym, I could do it. And special forces doesn't sound crazy, but the entry differs in the UK than in the States. How would you go about joining Delta Force for example, would it be the same as SAS Selection the UK? I get what you mean about wanting to be more than just another recruit, I feel the same way. Good luck to you anyway mate, and let me know what you decided on, I hope that your choice might aid me in my decision Oakshaft, I thought Canadian education teaches you French from a young age? Oakshaft
I live in Ottawa, and here it is mandatory until grade 10, for grade 10-12 French is optional, im not sure if its the same in other Provinces or Territory s though. I only know the very basics of French (like how to say cat or hi) yet I still managed to get through 9 years of it with a passing grade :S I just rely on the theory that all my French teachers became alcoholics at the end of the year and just gave me a good mark. But the thing I hate about the classes though is they don't teach you what words mean what etc... they only show you how to do grammar and the difference between il, la, un, une, or what masculine or feminine words are, its stupid since if you don't know any words (or very little) you wont get the grammar. I remember 2 years ago in grade 9, it was the easiest class ever because we would read these French books on tuesdays (which i didnt, she just gave you a mark if you were reading) on mondays we would act out skits or small plays and for the first half we just practiced, and for the second half we actually did them, but most of us never went because there was no time. Mr.Funny12
Well yes, the Delta force=SAS. I wasn't expecting something that prostegious though. I was thinking more along the lines of Army Rangers, or Para Rescue. but then again I don't really want to get into medical. I don't know exactly. I think I will most likely end up in a job where I get to travel. I've always wanted to see the world and I feel the military can do that for me. Also no, college is a choice after highschool. But there are jobs obviously in the military that takes a college degree to get into though such as Piloting, or officer jobs.
Jeeebuuus
Well, if the draft ever gets reinstated, and it is totally likely that one day it will, then I would choose the Navy(that is if I had a choice). Only because my father and grandfather were in the Navy. Tradition.
Dingdongs
Watch out with being an MP Mr. Funny... the people who served in my family have a saying. You can't spell WHIMP without MP --- basically MPs are hated by the entire service lol.
Nick Foster
My Grandfather on my Dad's side was a Petty Officer in the Navy in WWII, and my Grandfather on my Mom's side was part of the Filipino rebellion against the Japanese in the war. My Dad was drafted into the Marines when Vietnam came around, but due to a rule that said if you were in the top 10% of your college class, you didn't have to go, he stayed home. The military has always interested me, so I've been thinking a lot lately about going to Officer Candidate School in college and becoming an officer in the Marines, in the Infantry branch. guancho
I was a member of the Spanish Air Forces. I was blessed to fly over Libya before leaving the Air Force and joining the Spanish Polices. The military is a great experience. If you are American you will go all over the world. Good experience. Spain military I went to Spanish Africa territories and Italy air base also land on US carrier , amazing. Air is the best service in my view. reaperunlimited
when i was 17 i dreamed of nothing more then going into the army, well a week before i was supposed to go to basic i broke my hand so they released me. 3 years later i now have a wonderful son and a beautiful wife. I was going nowhere in the job i have so i joined the navy the reason is: 1) the navy has more jobs what will give you experience in the civilian world and better jobs then the army. 2) the navy gave me more benifits then the army. 3) if they ship me over seas i would only leave for 9 monthes not 12 or more my job is avation mech. and if you want a job that you can get in the civilion world go navy or airforce, if you just want to be infantry go army or marines. thats all i can say the rest is your choice.
