The "gentleman spy" thing was created by Connery and his almost inability to be a hard-ass. It worked great for the films. In the books, while Bond is certainly worldly and experienced and classy, he is a bit more of a dick, a misogynist, and a bit more violent. He beats people up, sometimes kills people he isn't supposed to, and is less respectful of women than his film counterpart. The gadgets and fancy toys don't start coming in until the books go on a bit further as Ian Fleming was convinced by the films' popularity to start adding them to his novels. In the first book, Casino Royale, Bond has a gun and that's it. Everything else is his wits and his spy bad-ass-ity. Bond's 'thing' is that he can endure insane amounts of physical torture- like more than anyone alive. He's just incredibly mentally tough. I suggest everyone who likes Bond check the books out. Start with CR. It's pretty cool to be honest. Just don't expect BMWs with laser guns in the headlights and Vaio laptops in every scene. It's not that kind of spy story. I lost interest in the movie series when there was the dissappearing car in Brosnans last film. I did like Casio Royale didnt see quantom of solace. I might catch up on the bond stuff someday. I am absolutely stoked for a new Bond. I see they have the role of Q filled this time, although I'm not going to lie, I still miss Desmond Llewelyn. There were only three titles left to use I believe; Risico, The Property Of A Lady, and the highly imaginative 007 In New York. Looking forward to this. I hope its more like Casino Royale and less like Quantum Of Solace, whose Spastic editing and car/boat/foot/plane chase overload left a sour taste. He's going to be be in his early 30's apparently, which just doesn't seem right somehow. I do like Daniel Craig, although my favourite Bond is Brosnan. The story was picking up momentum fast and I really don't want another Fleming novel plucked out of the archive and done over like all Bonds pre-Daniel Craig. Interesting to see that Q returns, maybe we'll see some gadgets but not too many I hope. This Ben Whimshaw guy, I'm not too sure on but I really liked his performance in Perfume: Story of A Murderer. But then, Spooks (MI5 in the states) did a similar thing when they re-cast their tech master, and I warmed to the new one better than I did the old one. Q returning younger would vibe with the theory some put out there that the titles of M, Q, and James Bond 007 are ambiguous and not unique to any one person. A minute isn't much to go on, but it's enough. Was quite surprised at the lack of any hint of a Bond theme tune, unless my ears are failing me. This way, it seems quite detached from the series. I don't know if that's a good thing. Also, Bond looks weathered in this film, which I really like - reminds me of the cynical old bastard we saw in the books. I've always thought Craig and Connery were the most accurate portrayals of Bond's character. I have to say this is the only film I'm really looking forward to in 2012. I'm not revved about TDKR, and Avengers fell short for me because I haven't seen any of the previous "build-up" movies. I'm eager to see what Sam Mendes can do for us. This is what I picked up from the trailer, too; Craig's portrayal of Bond is veering closer and closer to a truer version of the character, yet everything else surrounding the movie is veering farther from that special element that's been painted on the past twenty plus movies - especially the famous score - and it's hard to decide whether this is a good or not-so-good step in the franchise. I respect the absence of ridiculous gadgets and the addition of more character focus as much as the next guy, but I do miss seeing the 007 traditions. Girish Posted May 22, 2012 Share Posted May 22, 2012 I think I (faintly) detected the Bond theme towards the end of the teaser, although they seem to have given a heavy modern/techno feel to it. Would like to hear an extended version before passing a judgement on it though. I, too, miss seeing 007 rely on gadgets in certain cases as opposed to relying on just his instincts and fighting/survival skills in almost every situation. I don't mind their absence if the eye-widening action sequences are anything to go by, but the gadgets would add an extra something to it. That's what I feel, anyways. I'm sure anyone here would agree that Casino Royale - or even Quantum of Solace at that - could be easily degraded by the sheer quality of such masterpieces as The Man with the Golden Gun or Die Another Day. I would take it to be a new James Bond game, not a film, but the books were already exhausted I thought? Time to move to new plots and adventures, with the new Bond of course. Since you guys were falling all over yourselves about the new Batman and the new Bond before, and I favor the past, I'd be shocked if you didn't like it, honestly!
