Death of the protagonist

*SPOILER ALERT*

Potential spoilers for several R* titles in this thread.

As many of you know many of the recent R* games have ended with the main character dying, this is usually due to sacrificing himself for people he cares about. I also noticed that trailer has who is presumably the main character talking about how much he wants to settle down leave his life of crime and bring up a family. Now most of us know what happened to a certain man that tried to forget his past to settle down and have a family in a different R* game.

Now if we are to follow the cycle of some of the previous R* games it could mean that the death of the protagonist is very likely. I must however ask myself if they would include something similar in a way to GTA IV with the ability to chose your own ending through the choices that you make. If that's the case then perhaps the main character ending up dead may only be a possible ending.

However if it doesn't follow the way of IV and only has one ending then it's got a very big chance of having a dead protagonist, so with that in mind is it a possibility that you may end up playing as someone else after the main storyline has been completed.?

In any case this was something I think is definitely worthy of discussion, considering the fact that in previous games when R* decided to pull this stunt many players were not happy and some even hated and despised R*'s decision to off the main character in previous games. Would R* risk this type of situation again as many players build up a relationship with the character that they spend 50 - 60 hours with and us such may convince some players not to bother with caring about characters any more.

In addition to that Killing of the main protagonist seems to have become a major theme in the gaming industry today, so would R* be so common place to continue this trend or let there character live? Anyway to me it appears as though R* is in the habit of Karma coming back to bite the main character in the ass.

So what's your opinion on the death of the MC, Should it be optional, not happen at all or maybe you think that the main character should die to add some more emotional depth to the story.

then what happens to free roam?

You'll most likely have to play as another character when you have completed the game.

Please no. Having your protagonist get killed in the very end is so cliched. The only time it worked out real well was in Scarface.

If the game has more than one ending like GTA IV I wouldn't mind a happy ending similar to VC and SA, but the sad ending should have the protagonist die.

Of course certain choices would have to seal the protagonist's fate.

I can see it happening again. I got a very "Heat" vibe from the trailer. The suspected protag looks similar in age to the younger Robert Deniro, claims to want the same things Deniro wanted in the movie and there's the footage of the jewelry store robbery. Maybe at the end their could be a choice like at the end of Heat, go one way or go the other.

I prefer when protagonist with who we play entire game survive, but if its true that we play this time with 5 protagonists, then its possible that we would choose in last mission who would survive and who would die.

I have to agree. I think they made the trailer a little bit like IV (the (suspected) protag telling us about himself) so that if anything bad does happen to the protag (such as him dying) then it will have more of an effect on the player because we have more of a connection with the protag.

If you don't know what I'm talking about with the IV trailer then -

Niko: Perhaps here, things will be different

^said in first trailer of GTA IV

Id prefer a happy ending this time. The sad endings are overused these days.........I like sad endings but theirs been a hell of alot of them recently. I want a story with no complaining i want the protagonist to enjoy his life and not be a little bitch. If i hear one person say ''crime is dead/over'' or words to that effect. I'll legit punch my t.v. I love IV it's one of my favorite games of all time. But i dont want to go throw all that again

This time i'm hoping for a really, really happy ending. I couldn't make myself to free roam and have fun once i complited the main storyline in IV, because it felt pointless. Niko lost and i couldn't do anything about it. f*cking death of John Marston was even worse. I want my protagonist to be happy and succesful. Real life is sad enough as it is

It was pretty cool they made a game of it though. The game took off right after the hitman enters the window.

Played it on my Wii. Great game. GTA IV stole Scarface's cop radar radius.

Only one written by Houser has had a death of the protag but I dont think Houser would go for a death of the protag in V because his last game he writ (RDR) had that happening in. Rockstar is the only publisher/developer that I know though that has managed to get people talking about different games they make affecting eachother, you dont really have that magic with other publishers/devs as you dont have people talking about Skyrim and Fallout affecting eachother in the way R* games generate.

it would suck.......its stupid to play as one character entire storyline and at the end he dies which leaves you to play with someone you dont know, so please rockstar dont do it again

It was surprising in RDR. It would be contrived in GTAV. End of.

I hated having to playing as another character in Red Dead. I didn't know it was going to happen and when it actually happened i got annoyed and played the game less and less. I liked the main character and wanted to play as him.

I hope they don't do this in GTA. Niko wasn't one of the best characters in GTA history, but i still wanted to play as him all the way to the end and in free roam. All that work to make your player the king of the city and he dies. Probably to be replaced by a relative who isn't the king of the city and basically just a nobody.

Use spoilers!

And no i don´t want the protagnist to die.

But luckily in Grand Theft Auto games that never happened.

I doubt it. For one thing everyone would be expecting it at this point. I mean a lot of people were thinking that Niko was going to die in the lead-up to IV.

I'd rather have the protag live at the end since the game itself goes on way after the actual story ending. It just seems weird in a nonlinear game like GTA, there's no real closure to it since you have free roam even after the final mission. You just find yourself stuck with a character you don't have any real attachment to, and that's my biggest issue with a GTA protag dying at the end.

Although if there's going to be multiple endings again, then I suppose having one of the endings resulting in the death of the main character could work. I just wouldn't go for that particular ending for the reasons I already stated.

Agreed. RDR was awesome, but it would seem like a repeat no matter how it happened.

Once again, this guy has a great idea.

I am really interested if Rockstar will go for a multiple protagonist approach where each protag has a different "fate". One protag can live the life of Tommy or Carl, while another can succumb to a horrible fate similar to Cole Phelps or John Marston.

maybe those old rumors are true about the protag dieing and playing as his bro after but if the protag dies you should be playing as someone who appears throughout the story so if its his bro then he could appear as much as roman did maybe even have OPTIONAL friend activities

I definately do not want the protag of GTA V to die, like someone stated earlier I will have no connection to the character we get stuck with for free roam

it pissed me off in RDR i got stuck with Jack Marston that f*cking noob....

In RDR when John Marston died at the end and we had to play as his son , I was f*cking amazed and in shock, but for some reason I could see it coming.. I don't know why, maybe it was the fact that the agents he was working with (I forget their names... been a long time playing the game) killed the other people he has worked with and had pretty much the same criminal resume as him. The feeling in RDR wasn't really like GTA's it was RDR's. In a game like GTA it wouldn't really work UNLESS, the multiple protagonist idea has the two, three, maybe even more protags working in unison with the other protagonist that died. It would feel like you have a connection and after the story ends R* will need to pull something out and make the story last even longer, even after the final mission has been done. I just don't know how they'd do it.

Imagine if Niko died at the end and we'd have to play as Roman lol.gif

R* would have done it three times in a row with LA Noire and RDR (even though they just helped with LA Noire). So its a 30/70 chance of it happening again.
