Forzum
If this bill passes, which I hope it doesn't, there won't be any use for the internet then, right? Everything will be taken off like maybe this webpage? Am I understanding this correctly. I'm a bit confused about this law, if it passes. If this bill passes they can lock down websites that contain copyrighted material, so yeah if Take Two would want GTA Forums to be down due to copyrighted materials or so, the people who handle SOPA could lock it down. SOPA could easily destroy Facebook, MySpace, Mega upload, YouTube, and many many many more. An example, if you would upload a video where you sing a song by an artist which is copyrighted, they could lock down the entire YouTube, tho they would probably only ban your account, another example is that if you record some gameplay of V with commentary, SOPA could take it down just because you show GTA V, even tho the "video" is all yours. In other words SOPA can take copyrighted material protection to a whole new level. This is kinda of how it can be if I'm correct. I'm not 100% sure if I'm right, but it's something like that. I believe that as longs as example Take Two allows gtaforums to be allowed, even tho if there will be copyrighted material, SOPA will probably allow it as well. But as I said, I'm not 100% into all of SOPA, all I know is that it's a sh*t bill, and if it passes the freedom of Internet as we know it will be gone. And then theres another bill called PIPA which is also sh*t, and they run this bill the same time as SOPA to get as low people to notice PIPA as possible, and it works. Hopefully none of this sh*t passes, high sitters only want to control more in our world, thats it. Check out this for a very good video about SOPA & PIPA http://sopablackout.org/learnmore/ Edited January 16, 2012 by Forzum
Finn 7 five 11
But it is true though. If this is fully passes, fansites can get shut down. This site included. Why? Talking about games isn't a violation of copyright. You need to read the main internet censorship site. If it shows logos (like here), and it shows pics of gameplay or vids of it, it can be considered copyright infringement. Trust me, ive been on this for about 3 months now. That's the absolute worst case scenario. Even if companies (who in this scenario are headed by the offspring of Lex Luthor and the Wicked Witch of the West) were going to go after every instance of possible copyright infringement (which they won't because there would be no money recovered in exchange for pissing off your customers) It would be a waste of time and money going after the sites that embed content. They'd simply ask YouTube or Imageshack to stop hosting it, and put more pressure on them to vet content more thoroughly. As I said, the chances of games companies wanting to shut down sites because they used a logo or hosted game videos is slim. Very slim. It's free advertising, and evidence of their "reach". The focus will be on the sites that allow illegal access to the actual product they're selling, the games themselves. Staten you got it right, and canttakemykid It is not in the companies interests to go after petty lawsuits which in the end will only cost money and piss people off, it is in their best interests to allow fans to advertise the company, because it is free advertisement, and word of mouth advertising is probably the most effective ways to get people to buy something. You could read reviews all day long on a movie or game and not come to a decision, your mate could say to you "Lets go see Sherlock Holmes 2 i heard i saw it yesterday its awesome!" well chances are your gonna go see the movie. But you do have to remember, sometimes it is worst case scenario... http://sopablackout.org/learnmore/ Edited January 16, 2012 by finn4life
Staten
If this bill passes, which I hope it doesn't, there won't be any use for the internet then, right? Everything will be taken off like maybe this webpage and even YouTube? YouTube is where I find out about a lot of games, and if I want to buy them or now. Am I understanding this correctly. I'm a bit confused about this law, if it passes. No that won't happen, for two reasons: one, the bill in it's current form is not going to pass into law. Two, sites like this and YouTube would not be shut down, even if the bill had passed. Companies have limited resources, and would only go for those copyright infringements that are really hurting them, i.e. warez. @finn4life:
S1LV3R_W0LF
SOPA in my country literally means Soap ... and that will make nothing else then enforce piracy. You think the "underworld" will cross their arms with a freaking stupid idea like this? If you though Anonymous was bad, just wait if this crap is approved. jlamay
Thank you forzum for the explnation. So, then, if this law passes, which again I hope it doesn't, there won't be anything good on the internet anymore. So, I might as well let the internet go, because YouTube is how I found out about GTA 4. I go there to look up games I may want, to check them out before I buy them. I come on pages like this to look up things as well and see what everyone is talking about. So, if it is all taken away from me, then what's the point of having the internet?! I come on pages like this to look up things as well and see what everyone is talking about. So, if it is all taken away from me, then what's the point of having the internet?! Well huge sites like Facebook, YouTube etc, will probably stay, but it will become a lot more for "buisness" to promote their stuff. A lot of videos will get taken down, and banned just for singing or showing copyrighted material. Singing a copyrighted song could get you 5 years in prison, tho I highly doubt they would actually "arrest" someone and send them for prison just for singing a song, but there will be a hell lot of lawsuits and they will try to tackle every website which has copyrighted materials. The biggest reason for why they want SOPA & PIPA to pass is illegal downloading of course, but this won't stop it 100% but it will decrease it by a lot. This bill can actually pass, but I don't think it will, there are A LOT of company's & people that is against it, a few examples are: - Google - Ebay - Twitter - Barrack Obama - Facebook - Mozilla - Reddit - Yahoo - Wikipedia These are some of the really big sites & people going against it, and theres many many more. So the chances for the bill to actually pass is low, but the chance for the bill PIPA to pass, is a lot higher than SOPA. The Internet will become more "private" and a lot more restrict. Also January 18th there will be a world wide web protest against SOPA & PIPA, so if you want to "help" go against this, just share and tell about stopping SOPA & PIPA on Facebook, Twitter etc. Edited January 17, 2012 by Forzum
najtrows
its a disguise to control the people of the US, i am sooo happy that i dont live there. http://vimeo.com/31100268 Even tho you don't live there we here in Europe will be affected by it a lot as well, since most of the websites are in the US. And if it pass it will only be a matter of time before it goes worldwide. Hopefully it will never pass, it's so stupid. Removing the freedom of the Internet is just sooooo wrong. well yeah, but the white house already said no to it now and we do have our fair share of douchebags in sweden too, dont get me wrong. i just meant that it would affect the US most if it happened. but it seems like its not going to atm

Ispintechno
So the US government is going to spend billions on trying to censor the internet under the guise of copy right infringement and some fat guy in his mothers basement will bang out a program in 3 episodes of Jersy Shore and a bag of Cheetos (er, reality tv program and orange cheese puffs) that will hide your IP Address and allow you to do anything you want anyway. Wait programs like that exist already. This is going to cost the people of USA a lot of tax money to try to govern the internet, which doesn't solely belong to them. I guess you guys must have straightened out your economy and have $ to burn again! That's awesome I wonder if I should take down my you-tube channel. All airplane documentaries. You-tube American? Death2Drugs
SOPA and PIPA would actually be terrible for GTA V's development. Let's say a certain brand gets parodied in GTA V. For example, let's say Rebecca Black is parodied. Rebecca Black may legally sue Rockstar Games for copyright infringement. Obviously, I don't want R* paying money to sh*tty teen pop stars or big corporations because a parody of a company they made was somehow "infringing". Heck, let's say there's a deli in V with the same name as a real one in LA. That deli might try to sue. Hell, let's also say that somebody in GTA V says a famous movie quote. That movie quote was in a movie made by Viacom. Viacom could try to sue R* because a line from their movie was used. That's how SOPA and PIPA can affect GTA V. You'd name them Teressa Tack, and make her appearance slightly different. That's not copyright infringement - it's satire, which is different so no, that won't be a problem. But the quotes - that could be a problem. The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. Click here to view my Poetry

xxcyylonexx
I can't f*cking believe some of you retards believe SOPA is actually a good thing or something not worth paying attention to.You're a bunch of inconsiderate assholes!I really can't believe people not from the US know more about SOPA than you dumb americans. For one, you need to calm down. Also, I am an American and I fully understand SOPA and PIPA so don't stereotype. They will VERY unlikely pass and even if they do, it will be revoked soon after when they realize it was a bad idea.
