dyspoid
I am aware that the 360 is a noisy machine, and that almost every 360 makes it's own, unique kind of sounds. But I would like to ask two questions, just to settle my concernsm about my 1 month old machine. I recently noticed that my 360 makes a noise when I go from a game to the dashboard. It is as though the disc drive is still kind of spinning, but this noise does not stop. It does not occur when the machine is turned on, just when I exit a game to dashboard. It is a light whirring/screeching sound. Is this normal? It is odd to me, because when I exit the game, it is silent, so it know that it DOES stop, but then the drive begins to make this sound? Also, when I am playing Saints Row 3, the drive makes like CHK noises very, very frequently. It happens on other games, as they are starting up, but this is constant in SR3. Does anyone else get this? The noises themselves aren't really the issue, I just don't want a broken console after one damn month.
leik oh em jeez!
It's odd that even with how vague your descriptions are, I know exactly what noises your talking about. Sounds like any 360 I've ever used.
dyspoid
I know they're vague, sorry. It's just that any noise I could type wouldn't be the right noise, know what I mean? Ahh, damn. Do you get the back-to-dashboard sound, dude?
Shaunr
does it sound like the disk is scratching? do you notice scratch marks on the disk? does it seems the game loads fine when you are playing it?
Slamman
I found one of the best FAN SITES shows all the named revision changing SKUs offered for Xbox since 2006, not only does it give the names and reference data, but nice color images show what was done to change the GPU and CPU cooling, there is generally no noise made outside of the fans, two in back most commonly seen, however the drive could make noise ONLY when it's actually TRYING to read media, it wouldn't make noise in a stationary position. It's been awhile operating one in an open chassis, though I've done repairs like that on Xbox and PS3, I believe both of them start and stop the disc mech when needed, there's no constant rotation or you'd be wearing out important components much faster! dyspoid
When on saints row 3, it sounds like its scratching, but it doesnt seem to be? its like a chk chk chk sound. it seems to load fine, though ive noticed the game MIGHT seem to have longer loading times (u only notice these thongs when looking...) and like wierd things. slamman.... what do you mean? Its not meabt to make noise? Sorry, im just. lil drunk
friendly luggage
The "chk chk chk" sound is common on my xbox when I'm loading up a game. It's just the disc being read. I would recommend installing the games to your hard drive as it'll only read the disc to check it's in the drive. Otherwise everyone would just be lending out each other their games. The old style xbox 360 gets very loud with its two fans at the back though.
Slamman
One anomaly is the laser mech reportedly scrapping the discs because it sits too high at times, that would produce a nasty sound. I've not seen it myself

Shaunr
the scraping could be the sound of the lazer moving back and forth rapidly. mine does that. it sounds like scraping but it's not. i would install my games on the HDD i i were you. save your lazer's life and your ears. also, abotu your 4 rrod'd xboxes, did you ever try to fix it yourself? like making it overheat by stopping the fans? i've had 3 red rings before and i fixed it with that. now i only get 1 red ring and it only happens when i place the xbox horizontally. Rebel
That chk chk chk sound I've heard before. Don't be so worried about it, from what I remember it only happens when you start up a game and its in initial loading stages? If you think you are getting longer loading times on games try installing them to the HDD if you have any room.
dyspoid
@Rebel: It happens on most games, when starting, but my concern is that when I am playing Saints Row 3, the chk chk noise is constantly audible... it's really wierd. Just to clarify, my Xbox is a new 250gb Slim, I purchased it about a month ago, so all the parts are new. I'm guessing it just happens on some games, as there might be a lot to read? I just don't recall hearing it on my old school 360? Then again, I went to bed a lot earlier when I owned that, so now the silence of the night lets me hear a lot more. I am most concerned with the sound the system makes when I play a game, then go back to dashboard. There is silence for a few, brief moments, then another sound is made, which does not stop till I switch the system off. It's strange to me, because it doesn't make a sound when I turn on the console and browse the dashboard, JUST when I return to it? Ahh... so wierd. Try the noice of the wii when a disk is being read. It makes me wanna

leik oh em jeez!
Nah, it overheats to the point that the lead-free solder balls attaching the GPU to the motherboard melt, then resolidify with the connection broken. The key is to stick a couple of toothpicks in the fans to stop them, force the system to overheat and melt the solder back in to place. Worked for me with RROD two or three times, and E 74 30+ times.
