Royal55
Well, we couldn't exactly confirm that this GTA coming up is for current generation consoles, since nothing is official yet, but it's pretty obvious that it will be. My question to all here is if you think that GTAV will be the last for this console cycle? You know, the record breaking, off the wall, Grand Theft Auto that'll please all, "the big one"! Many can argue about which Grand Theft Auto was their favorite for last generation and they can also debate upon that issue that San Andreas was the best because it had everything, something for everyone. Anyways, on a personal note, Vice City was my favorite because the nostalgic feel and the overall environment, but a vast majority of people (remember this is opinion based..) loved San Andreas for the reasons above, which is fine by me, but I think it's a bit ignorant coming from a hardcore fans perspective. Don't get me wrong, I love San Andreas, it's a close second from Vice City, but will Rockstar decide to take the San Andreas path this time around, I guess you can say again. Even though it's technically not the same San Andreas, Los Santos. We all know that San Andreas was a favorite to all because you could literally (at that time, with the console power) do anything you wanted, vast space, fighter jets, secret government labs, an out of control story-line and customization of tons of things, and that's just to name a few features off the bat. What I'm trying to get at, is that Rockstar might be doing some sort of trend with their final Grand Theft Auto for a console's cycle, and let me take note this has nothing to do with location, nothing. From the looks of the trailer alone, this game is going to be vast and it's clearly going to be something we've never played before in a GTA. A concern that comes to mind, is the fact that rumors (..rumors..) about reveals of next generation consoles have been running rampant lately and let's face it, this generation may have another 3-4 years at best left and that's being modest. Technology is advancing at an exponential rate and it's a bit scary because it's getting hard to keep up with. In a nutshell, San Andreas was a big bang out of last generations consoles as far as Grand Theft Autos go. Coincidentally, Los Santos, San Andreas, is potentially the final game out of this cycle (remember, nothing to do with location). Could it be that this game will be the crowd pleaser for this generation (many features, huge map, unique story-line, etc..)? Is Rockstar willing to take that risk? Do you believe we'll see another game before this cycle is over, to follow V? I know it's a little soon to be talking about such a thing, but hey, some speculation won't hurt. cbiscuit93
Great thoughts. I was recent thinking just about the same thing. I feel like RockStar is going to take everything they've learned from IV and RDR, take everything that made SA the best GTA, and expand on them both greatly. In my opinion San Andreas is currently the best GTA, but I feel that V has a lot of potential to change that.
grope_4_that_date
Don't think so - technology is always changing. GTA5 might look good now, but just wait until you see the GTA in 2026.
locolow2011
I do think its the last GTA of this generation of consoles but i don't think it will make such an impact as SA did. To me this new GTA looks like it will have everything that was missing in IV, but no innovation, no new things. I could be wrong though.

paced
You have to understand that the ambience and vibe argument that people use to say why they prefer Vice City can be applied to San Andreas as well. I prefer not only SA's content but its theme. So this alone is subjective to everyone for each and any GTA instalment. And er yeah I think a lot of people here agree that this should be the last GTA for this console generation. The latest I can guess that the next generation of consoles will launch is 2014 and I certainly don't see the following major GTA launching in 2, or even 3 years for that matter. Algonquin Assassin
What we must remember is the market was different back in the days of VC and SA. Not many games offered as much freedom or had as much soul which is why millions adored them. These days the competition is stiff and you have to wonder what else could they do. It's not impossible, but back in the VC and SA days R* jagged perfectly when most developers hadn't caught onto the genre. It would be hard to replicate the "feel" of VC and SA so it's probably in R*'s best interest they don't get all nostalgic with GTA V and let it be its own game. LotusRIP
I definitely see where you're coming from, I've always felt like V will be the last of this generation... and it's funny that they always save San Andreas for last, in other words saving the "best" for last (because they'll just throw absolutely everything in there, make a huge badass map, it'll be an instant favourite for everybody)
grope_4_that_date
Sorry Royal, I guess I didn't read your original post correctly. Yes, I agree with you 100%. GTA5 will be the last game of this generation. They will most likely give this game everything they got. Reasons why: 1) GTA4 already blew us away with graphics. They can't do that again. Thus, GTA5 will be action-packed with new gameplay features. 2) You're reason: GTA5 is the last game of this generation of consoles. There's no holding back. GTA IV was just a foundation. All the basics have now been sorted to allow for a much bigger and expansive game. You only have to look at RDR and that's a different game. While I don't doubt they'll still refine core mechanics it's unlikely it'll be as much of a focus as it was in GTA IV. JoshGTAfreak
I really think they're going to go all out for this game. I have a feeling it's going to be a combination of all the previous GTAs. The warmth of Vice City, the depth of IV, the over-the-top amount of side missions of SA. At least they seem to be going for a different feel with this Los Santos. It seems completely different in this game, so it won't feel repetitive.

Jokesminus
I personally think they are gonna go down the lets go out with a bang this time as they did on the last gen. R* have never been ones to care what other developers are doing including THQ and Saints Row, Saints row tried its best to start a war with R* but failed R* didnt even rise to it. So i dont think they care GTA will always hold its own above the rest its the one and oldest free roam do what you want game. No one can beat GTA they dont even have to out do anything all they have to do is give the fans what they want and it will sell more then any other free roam game. Although R* will bring something new to the table every time this game will re make everything we knew and change it up it will feel like a new game. New areas and a whole different feel. I personally dont think we will get a GTA V San Fierro or GTA V Las Venturas as if it took 4 years to create just Los Santos and surrounding countryside and hills we wont be seeing the other cities even in a download content. It takes to long and R* already said they are sticking to smaller download content from now on from $20 to $10. So we wont be seeing the other cities at all as each one would take 4 years to create. I do think we will see those cities in GTA V though as they cant just be forgotten and swept away and GTA V San fierro and GTA V Las Venturas if going by what people say this game has taken 4 years for just Los Santos and surrounding hills. Then we can pretty much rule out those other cities for another 4 years. Its just way impossible to think we can expect to see the other cities outside of GTA V 4 years per city and smaller download content way to impossible to see SF/LV at all. So thats why I think we will be seeing them in GTA V. I do think this is the las GTA for this current gen and Liberty City is over so I can say we will be seeing Vice City on next gen. And as for things feeling the same honestly even when I got GTA IV and getting GTA III on the iphone I saw a few things that looked like GTA III in GTA IV. GTA IV was re done but after playing through GTA III I saw alot of places and sound effects that felt the same. When I first played GTA IV I heard the sound effects and though thats very GTA III like the people screaming and the gun shots. Then playing through GTA III I saw alot of things that resembled with GTA IV. The whole feel felt the same even though places didnt all match. So I expect the same in GTA V. Coral_City
Such a coincidence you would mention that OP, since I was reading an article that signaled the end of current gen consoles U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 21 percent in December from a year ago to $3.99 billion as players bought fewer games for their aging consoles, according to market researcher NPD Group. The results are “not entirely surprising given that we are at the back end of the current console lifecycle,” said NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier. - Source If you're too lazy to read the article, it goes on to say: "Not only are consoles getting older, but the way games are delivered is undergoing change. Consumers are now expecting more content to be delivered over the Internet" I reckon that GTA V (and its associated DLC's) will be the last for the 360 and PS3. And at this point, I don't think it'll blow our socks off. I know it's presumptuous to base everything off one teaser trailer, but there doesn't seem to be a vast improvement over its predecessor. I for one have started buying pre owned games and people expect there money to go further thats why they want more downloadable content. Downloadable content is cheaper then buying a game brand new and quite frankly games have got smaller with alot of shooter games taking me an average of 1 day to complete. So I expect to see downloadable content to extend my games and cheaper then buying a new game. Games prices have risen by quite alot this year that is also a downfall to games sales. A new gen so soon is honestly only for the rich I wont be buying one for a long time I have more to do in life then spend high prices on games consoles every 6 years its a waste and is what is gonna be consoles downfalls. We have already seen alot of consoles that where just too ahead of there time just vanish Gamecube, Dreamcast, people just cant spend as much nowadays things are getting to expensive and its suicide in these times. brian.
Personally, I thought when the "semi-leaker" in the news stories around the web said it was "the big one" he was hinting at it being Los Santos/SA. Jokesminus
I also think games should not become to realistic there has to be a line between real life and games. There is a difference between a film and a game in a film you watch murder in a game you are controlling the murder you are making it happen. Realism could and would not go well in a GTA game it would end it the media sh*t storm would ban it and kill it dead. The fact that people will look as real as the people walking down the street would cause too much of a media sh*t storm it just simply is not the same as a film in a game you control that murder in a film you watch it and are in no way controlling it. After all there was a reason we could not kill peds in LA NOIRE even if you ran them over they still got up and walked off. Killing criminals is ok though or accidently killing a ped in a shoot out with a criminal as that happens all the time. I also read somewhere that developers have not even come close to fully pushing the PS3 to its full limits only games like uncharted 3 and upcoming game The Last Of Us which to be honest looks next gen they have alot to tap into with this current gen to end it before even hiitting the full potential is just a major flaw. An quite frankly would upset me there is also games showing next gen but are for the current gen. There is proof of this LA NOIRE was originally a PS3 exclusive but R* felt it would sell better on both consoles. LA NOIRE runs ten times better then the XBOX version as it was doen for the PS3 then ported to XBOX 360. Most developers make games for the XBOX 360 then port them to the PS3 but its actually easier to make games for the PS3 then port to XBOX. Which I hope R* learnt from LA NOIRE and will do this for GTA V as doing it the other way round makes PS3 games look like sh*t. It was actually Brendan McNamara that said this I havent got a source but its easily found. Some even said LA NOIRE was gonna be a next gen game next gen doesnt have to involve getting a new console either as its mostly about graphics tap fully into the consoles around today and then call it next gen. P.S I am in no way a PS3 fanboy nor am I inciting console wars nor am I a game hater or am Ia person that thinks games cause murder. I just dont think games should be nor get too realistc. CookPassBabtridge
I agree with Jokesminus: the world is pretty much fkn broke. It's one thing to be paying 60-100 for a game and dlc, entirely other to be forking out hundreds for a console, then 60-100 to play something on it. Im probably biased on that, mainly because my personal gaming era is pretty much over. But it will be a harder sell for some people. As for GTA, if if this is the last installement, its something of a waste IMO. The ps2 managed III, VC, SA and the Stories games, all the time innovating and improving the replay value. (maybe not with the stories so much). So far we have had IV and two DLCs, and little in the way of real innovation. And before anyone says "oh but the graphics and physics etc" Im talking about design-wise and play features, not the bells and whistles. Nothing has really changed to prove that technology is always the answer. Plus, what could we really expect from a new wave of hardware? Slightly better graphics and even longer development time?? Nope, for me, companies should keep it current gen for a while longer, squeeze out as much as possible. Edit: in answer to the main point, R* need to be honest and market whatever is going to make this the big bang ending. Granted its only one trailer, but having planes is the only twist so far. Which we have had from day one until IV. Edited January 13, 2012 by CookPassBabtridge

Certain games should not cost $60. That $60 is unfortunately the industry standard, and there's a certain breakdown involved. With the increasing cost of crude oil, transportation, standards of living, etc. you're going to see more expensive games. NoxiousWR
It's pretty much a guarantee that GTA V will be the last of this generation. I think though that the new generation of consoles won't hit the shelves till 2014 at the earliest, although next year could be possible but seems unlikely to me. I also think this GTA will be the big one and to the people moaning not to expect too much... There was no big leap in graphics from GTA VC to GTA SA so moaning about GTA V graphics being not much better than IV is just finding an excuse to moan about something - there's only so much they can do on these consoles. And tbh, it's a video game - it's not meant to be photorealistic and be exactly like real life otherwise where's the fun going to come from? theworldfamous
it's fair to say V will be to this generation what SA was to the last. Considering the size of the map I suspect Rockstar will do something like they did with the episodes for IV. GTA IV was already pretty taxing on the hardware, so V will probably squeeze the very last juice out of them. It's unlikely there's much room for improvement on current gen after this so they'll move on to the next, altough we might still see a Bully 2 and/or RDR 2 come out. Maybe they're saving RDR 2 for the next gen.
Jokesminus
I agree and disagree with coral_city games are getting more expensive and the rising fuel prices and shipping costs. I remember when games use to be £40 here in the UK new releases and brand new games but to be honest I also dont agree with you on the basis that here in the uk DVDS and BLU RAYS have stayed the same price yet games have risen by £10 they now stand at £49.99. So I personally cant say that its because of fuel and shipping costs its high because there is money in games. If they stay at that price people will buy less games and try and improve the games they already have with DLC. This world is broke and we havnt even hit the hardest part yet in the next year or 2 we can expect things to rise and taxes electric gas petrol. Parents just will not be able to afford to buy there kids new games and adults will not be able to afford new games. I think more and more people are going pre owned games and waiting for prices to drop by waiting a while after release they then can also buy it pre owned. There is usually a brand new game in a pre owned game shop within a week of it releasing. Times are only gonna get harder and releasing a new console is plain suicide they will only hit about 25% of the market with only people who can really afford it buying it. The rest will wait a long time to get it cheaper even with a new gen of consoles coming out in 2 years or more it will then take another 6 years for everyone to have one in the home. PS3 sales are only just now taking off they could go cheaper and make the next gen cheaper. But then the graphics would be only slightly better then this current gen. Its just suicide on there part they actually lost alot of money with this gen of consoles. They are only now starting to make that money back its plain suicide to do a next gen now or even in the next couple of years.

It would be suicide for current gen consoles, I don't think many parents are prepared to dish out $600 just so Tommy could have a new console. Will they be ready within the next one-to-two years? I think so. I also think everyone's fighting to either make money or save money. e.g. take for example individuals who bought a new Mass Effect 2 game, they were rewarded with the Cerberus Pack code. People who bought it used had to buy it separately. Companies can sell cheap consoles (it's been reported that the PS3 costs more money to make, than to sell), but they need to find a way to lure gamers in. Games are that vessel

Games are that vessel Hmm got me thinking maybe they are charging you for that extra download you think your getting for free is infact costing you extra in the game price. Yeah I read the same that it costs more to make the consoles then they sell them for I picked up my 320gb PS3 for £199 with resistance 3 and Battle LA on blu ray. A cheaper new console might draw people in but its still only ever gonna be slightly better then this gen. I read somewhere that next gen is not all about the graphics its about the feel like if R* for GTA wanted to make each ped do something different and look different they could. I also read that the next gen is gonna be cheaper and not to be funny but if these rumors are true I wont be buying the next gen why would I pay to have the same graphics with peds doing different things. Its still a hassle for many though even if it costs $200 thats alot of money for alot of people nowadays then the $60 games then the extra control and hdmi cable if it comes with one. Not worth it its a little like just as people have all got one another comes out. And as far as I knew these consoles would be around for 10 years then next gen would kick in. They should really focus on pushing this gen to the very limit and riding it out for a while.
Snake Without a Tongue
Don't think so - technology is always changing. GTA5 might look good now, but just wait until you see the GTA in 2026. I hope when I die I do it after playing the most recent GTA but before the next one is announced.
