Im tired of this theory. Los Angeles is on the pacific ocean and is located where it is because of the ocean. If we are surrounded by desert, you lose all the luster of the ocean and what comes with it (beaches, surfing, piers, etc.) It wouldn't make any sense to surround Los Santos with desert if they are basing it on Los Angeles.

We can have both. One half of the map could be bordered by an ocean and the other by desert.

Endless desert would not work for two reasons:

1. you could end up so far away from the actual cities and towns how the hell would you get back. how would the map work... if anyone's played just cause 2 will know there were a few stretches of vast uninhabited mountains and deserts just imagine than times infinty seems pointless.

2. rockstar wouldn't want there to be so much map that has no part to play in the story. if the desert randomly generates as you travel you couldn't really add anything to it.

endless ocean has always worked. it created the illusion of a whole complete place not just part of something bigger or surrounded by an endless desert. I hope they have hidden islands out in the ocean to explore.

Boundaries and GTA just don't mix. It goes against the mantra of GTA, for me. GTA III was an exception like RDR, both had no flight capabilities (the Dodo really doesn't count).

That mountain we see in the trailer better be passable, or I and countless other players are going to mighty upset.

And the infinite water solution is still the only solution that you can really suspend your disbelief. Infinite terrain of any sort is not going to work. So, let's keep it the way it is.

rdr was different , no planes and helis plus it is set in the old west so having an island wouldn't have worked as there weren't any beaches so they used mountains and rivers to create borders .

I like the idea of mountain ranges and endless deserts that restrict the player to staying in the map. It would make it feel like the map is connected with the rest of the cities in the GTA universe. I think the players should be able to try to get over these obsticles. For instance, if you want to escape ther map by running into the endless desert, your character should say somthing like "Better turn back, or I'll never make it through this heat" before the player dies of dehydration. Or if you try to swim out of the map the character would say "I'm too tired to keep going, better turn back before I drown.". If you are in vehicles such as planes, boats, and cars trying to escape the map, after a certin point the vehicle should break down (planes loose engines, boat takes on water, car runs out of gas). This would allso allow alot of easter eggs to be added into the game, for instance in a certin area of the water you can see the submarine, The USS Numnutz from San Andreas, stuck on a rock. Or perhaps a road sign pointing to Armadillo from RDR in the middle of the desert.

GTAV will be surrounded by endless ocean, having mountains too high to fly over would destroy the illusion of an open world. Endless ocean is the best way to do it

I agree.. also i think that you will be able to fly pretty high, but when these mountains are THAT high, it would destroy the beautiful view

@jdrandall38

You do know that half of Los Angeles is surrounded by land, right? It's not an island suicidal.gif

How would it make more sense to put beaches and piers in a place where in real life it should be desert?

@IAmMars

I think someone has said before that it could be possible to make the height limit for flying vehicles higher in the middle of the map, but lower down when you approach the mountains. That could work as it wouldn't interfere with flying around or doing missions by helicopter/plane, but if you see a mountain range heading straight for you you'd still want to turn around.

So this is what you think rockstar will do. Surround an ocean side city with nothing but desert. No beaches, no jetskis (which we have already seen in the trailer) etc.

IF the city in gta v was Phoenix, Arizona, this would make sense but not for a Los Santos. To get the feel of a beach side city, IMO you would have to make the map surrounded by endless ocean.

To the people that say " It worked with RD Redemption," that is a completely different story. How many planes where there to fly over the mountains in RDR? And how many will there be in GTA V? There's your difference.

GTA V WILL be surrounded by endless ocean.

Why not have the player's health just drop when they approach the edge of the map. Slow enough for you to turn round and go back without any harm, but if you carry on you only get a few more meters before you die. Maybe your engine could die first then if you get out and walk you get ill. A radioactive cloud or even an Alien abduction smile.gif

So people will Mod the game so you never die but in that case just beyond the reachable boundary there could be an invisible wall.

I don't think R* should worry about what modders do. if the game crashes because they pass the boundary then so what.

Endless water is the only way I see the boundary working. It wouldn't make sense to have an invisible wall like the majority of other Rockstar games. If anything, GTAIV felt more like part of a virtual world, by that I mean giving the illusion that you're proceeding forward into the horizon, when in reality you're not actually moving anywhere.

San Andreas' bouncing boundaries were annoying as hell though.

Your post is factually incorrect.

GTA:IV did not give "the illusion that you're proceeding forward into the horizon, when in reality you're not actually moving anywhere." GTA:IV had actual endless ocean. You could fly or sail as far as you liked and if you wanted to come back you had to fly or sail the same distance back.

GTA:SA did not have "bouncing boundaries." It too had endless ocean in which you could fly or sail freely.

The last mainstream GTA game to have invisible boundaries was GTA:VC (I don't know about any of the hand held titles). The invisible redirectional walls were situated a short distance away from the shores.

I expect GTA:V will feature the same sort of endless ocean model with landscaping tricks (i.e. high ground) along the apparent "landward" sides of the playing area to give the illusion that the island isn't really an island (similar to the northern side of the SA map).

I'd love to see endless planes of sand where you could put your vehicles to the test without ever having to turn. That would be amazing

not really "boundaries", but you can't go on forever, i think

I dont really see how this really attracts or detracts from the main game at all. Whilst i kind of see the "Immersion" arguement I would say that water does that just fine, the only thing i recall about the GTA 3 "semi land locked" map is how much I HATED that mountain, that really felt like it was blocking me from accessing something.

Water just lets you know you've reached the edge of the area your in. Think of every GTA location as its own little country as opposed to the fact that they should all be connected by a piece of land and its fine.

Somethings are never good enough for some people, when we get to the point in many a years time that rockstar manage to create they're own version of the US, it still wont be good enough for some that you cant fly to another country over there water.

I think it's just a matter of opinion. But I never enjoyed going infinitely thru the endless sea of GTA. The only time I did this I was required to do so, on GTASA, when you have to fly to Liberty City.

For me, the blocked tunnels from GTA3's Liberty City bugged me a lot less than the other maps that area surrounded by water -- mainly San Andreas, where a desert is surrounded by water, not to mention a dam with water that comes from nowhere.

Making a huge desert on an edge of the map would be great and after going a certain distance you will get wanted by military or a sandstorm generates and you wake up at the nearest hospital.

It would be the best way to make you feel part of something bigger

As in mountains they should let you cross them in a helicopter or a plane just for you to see a plethora of mountains on and on untli you get shot down, or they should let you cross it with climbing and dirt bikes and when you reach the top there would be a long field and more mountains.

In mountains for example they could just make an invisible wall that turns you around without you noticing or something like that, like they do with GTA's seas

I thnk its not just a question of what you visibly can see but also how real the city feels in terms of what is told about it and its world. Like u can see signs of travelus advertising flights to las venturas etc.

I definitely felt that the city felt real and its universe as well. However i think there should be more traffic and more pedestrians to make it better!! Which is something that disturbed me when I watching the GTA V trailer; almost no pedestrians?!

Hope they change that

I was totally trying to find that aspect of GTA IV while I was reading that... But then again, I guess GTA IV gets a pass since it is a more detailed version of NYC, which is indeed a group of islands

Have you ever looked at a real map of NYC? The only "island" is Manhattan (which would be Algonquin in GTAIV) and it's not really an island anymore due to landfill. Alderny is supposed to be New Jersey and NJ definitely not an island.

So if we can all be ok with Liberty City not being a geographically accurate representation of NYC then I'm sure we can deal with Los Santos not being a geographically accurate representation of Los Angeles/southern California. Just surround it with water.

*decades from now when I retire and start playing video games again to get my mind off of being old as f*ck and to pass the time, it's going to be nice not worrying about boundaries as open world games might just be completely round globes the size of earth monocle.gif

you never know

I loved the endless ocean in GTA IV biggrin.gif I would be fine with it returning.

They could make it like GTA IV. If you travelled to far out you would start losing health.

If there's Endless desert or even ocean and one has driven really far out, then there should be an earth quake or some other disaster that kills you and makes you respawn back at your safe house. The same goes for flying to far, if you do, then there should be a really bad storm that crashes you and kills you. Just thinking about it and can see people going all the way out there over and over again just to see how or long they can last. But maybe its real quick and there's not even a slight illusion of being able to make it through....

Or as I suggested earlier a giant spider burrows out from under the ground and tips your vehicle over, then scuttles off into the sunset. icon14.gif
