[Q/REQ] Start-up resolution bypass 3/VC/SA

Hello all,

I am new here and tried to put this topic in the most suitable part of the forum. If I messed up and it needs to be moved that's fine. I apologize to whoever has to move it but in all fairness, this forum is like a cluster**** of information so even finding this spot for it was a chore.

Long story short, I've been trying to get 3/VC/SA running properly under wine (Windows application translation software for Linux) but my netbook doesn't exactly meet the game's graphics requirements. My screen resolution only works up to 1024x576. So i've been having trouble with getting each of them to load up so I can adjust the resolution to 640x480. I always get the same error upon booting the games up, "Cannot find 800x600 video mode". That's obvious, since the netback won't display that resolution. I already ran all three games under Windows (via an external display) to generate the proper .set files with correct resolutions/settings but when I try to use them under wine, they always fail and i get the same 800x600 error. It's annoying considering the games were all tested when I had them running under Windows and they ran great! I can only assume maybe my card is seen differently under wine or something similar that would cause the games to 'reject' the .set files I made in Windows but these are merely guesses.

Anyway, so here's my request/question; Is there any patches/mods or fixes someone can link me to that will remove the .exe startup resolution checks that each game performs prior to loading? I would prefer something that just patches the original .exe's directly instead of another script method or something similar, but if I can get them all working I honestly won't be that picky. I'm just out of ideas here. I've been screwing with this for days already and the only conclusion i've been confident about fixing these problems are to just simply find ways of removing the checks.

Hopefully, someone has an answer for me soon as i'm tearing my hair out trying to find ways of getting around these stupid checks R* decided to put into each game. My system specs can be found below if needed, please note they are off the top of my head and might have one or two errors. Thanks for your time!

Specs:

CPU: Intel Atom 1.6Ghz (i think)

RAM: 1GB

GFX: Mobile Intel GMA945/950

VRAM: 8MB Shared (i think)

Resolutions: 640x480-1024x576

***UPDATE: Solved! I had to trick the system and wine by making them think I had higher resolutions available then I actually do through use of an external monitor. Once the games were running I had to set them up to use the lowest settings possible, then exit the games to allow the .set files to generate. Afterwards, I disconnected my external display and tried running the games again and with my "faked" resolution settings in the new .set files, all the games boot and play just fine. Got all three games working now. As long as the .set files remain intact and untouched, I shouldn't encounter anymore problems with these games. However, if one of them starts acting up or ever breaks, now I know how to fix them. Hope this information helps someone else down the line. smile.gif

MODS: I planned on changing the status of this thread from [Q/REQ] to something more suitable like, [sOLVED]. So, if it's allowed, feel free to fix that for me since I can't. Thanks!

Hopefully this type of discussion isn't frowned upon but I would still be very interested in obtaining some patchers that can completely remove these stupid video checks from the game's individual .exes.

I can give you my gta_sa.set.

Lowest Settings.

Also all you do with the .set is place it in your GTA San Andreas User Files Folder.

If you want my gta_sa.set just say yes and I'll be happy to help

I don't own GTA III or VC though.

Well based on my experience with these games, I'm pretty confident that each .set file is tied to the GFX card they were created with. I'm up for trying it though. I see no reason why it would hurt to at least try it. I'm up for any and all help I can get with this. Thanks! smile.gif

The GTA_SA.set files are created by each computer with the specific config of that computer. That's why the first problem solver is to delete it when drivers/os/config change, so the game can make a new one with the current settings.

Figured it all out!

To sum it all up, I had to trick the system and wine by making them think I had higher resolutions available then I actually do through use of an external monitor. Then it was just a matter of setting the lowest resolutions, exiting and letting the games make the required .set files. Lastly, I needed to disconnect my monitor and just try them out. All three games work fine.

Problem solved! smile.gif
