GTA V on 64-bit, maybe just a dream

I run GTA IV on MY 64 bit COMPUTER!! IT RUNS PERFECT!!!!

I don't see why this needs a thread when the game already runs in 64 bit!

You are missing the point. A program on a computer or a game can only use around 3.5GB of RAM when it is coded in 32bit. A 32bit program can run on a 64bit OS, but that isn't the point.

If a game was coded in 64bit it could use 6GB or more RAM if it wanted to.

Oh, so even though I have a 64 bit os and I installed GTA IV on it, it's still only a 32bit software game that's just compatible on 64bit?

Pretty much, that's why you have two program files on my computer.

-Program Files - (regular for 64bit stuff)

-Program Files (x86) - (for 32bit stuff)

Yes. It would be nice if Cockstar could actually release a decent PC port, but the only "port" the devs are interested in is the Wine kind. Coding time = less whiskey time for the developers.

Ah Zee, always when I read your post, I laugh like sh*t lol

Tell me why you hate Cockstar, like stated in your post how you call Rockstar Cockstar lol

Dickstar?

Or VagiStar?

Anyway, when I get a new high end notebook, it gets a Windows7 64bit.

So yeah, these days you can find on most PC's and laptops a 64bit OS.

GTA:IV is a native 32 bit app. According to the packaging it has some "64 bit enhancements", but all that means is that it is something called "large address aware" and they have made sure that it will run on a 64 bit Windows O/S under WoW64 without problems. But it is still fundamentally a 32 bit game and cannot run in an address space larger than 4GB.

People here are talking about the 3.25GB of available RAM in a 32 bit O/S. Remember that your game won't be using all that 3.25GB. The O/S uses a significant amount of that RAM; as much as 1.7GB under Vista. Win7 has a smaller footprint and XP smaller still. GTA:IV on a 32 bit O/S will only practically have around 2GB or so actually available to it. If you run GTA:IV on a 64 bit O/S with 4GB RAM, the O/S footprint still limits the amount of space available to the game.

If you run GTA:IV on a 64 bit version of the O/S, with as much as 8GB, GTA:IV can theoretically have as much as 4GB RAM to itself. I run it on an 8GB machine with Vista64 and I haven't seen GTA:IV use more than 3GB.

As for GTA:V, well that's the big question, isn't it? There isn't a huge performance boost to be gained by running it with the 64 bit instruction set. The primary benefit of 64 bit is the amount of RAM you can address and it is using that extra memory that will yield any kind of performance boost. But the game will be architected for the lowest common denominator which are the current gen consoles which are over 5 years old and don't have large quantities of memory.

I cannot see them going out of their way to compile and test it all as 64 bit. The only reason they might would be because of the wider installed base of 64 bit users and users having more than 4GB RAM.

There is one glimmer of hope. But this is a long shot. And that is if they do anything for the next gen consoles, such as releasing separate editions for next gen, incorporating enhancements for next gen or only releasing GTA:V for next gen. If GTA:V is written in any form to take advantage of next geneneration consoles which are likely to have a 64 bit architecture and will undoubtedly have much higher RAM specifications, then there is a chance that any such enhancements might find their way into a 64 bit edition of GTA:V for Windows. But I repeat, THIS IS A LONG SHOT.

There is other reason why GTA is not made for 64bit O/S.

It would take them a lot of time and it would cost them too much money to make it 64bit version.

I'm very sure they won't make it 64bit.

64bit programs can't be run on 32bit system.

It would give an error "This application is not a 32bit blablabla"

Yes. This is what I was trying to get at. It would cost too much for such limited benefit.

I'm not sure why you are saying this in response to my post. smile.gif I have not suggested that 64 bit programs can run on a 32 bit O/S. I know they can't. biggrin.gif

Any 64 bit deployment (which is unlikely in the first place) would be packaged alongside the 32 bit version on the same set of discs. So that when you run the install it would automatically choose the appropriate edition (i.e. 32 or 64 bit) depending on your O/S. So in the highly improbable event that they release a native 64 bit GTA, it would be done this way and you would not see the error message you indicate.

[EDIT] Edited to make my meaning even clearer, I hope. biggrin.gif [/EDIT]

Any 64 bit deployment (which is unlikely in the first place) would be released as a dual version install package which would install the edition appropriate for your O/S. So in the highly improbable event that they release one, it would be done this way and you would not see the error message you indicate.

Yeah, it's most likely GTAV will be a 32bit game, but it'll get a large address

to make it run better on 64bit ystem.

I never had a memory leak on my 64bit ista, never had

But you Rockstar Games, thousands people working on different games, it would costs R* way too much money.

And yes, it would be a problem for people who has 32bit O/S.

I dunno if you guys know it , but a big group filled with people and kittysperm is still on 32 bit.

Oh yes. We know. Although 64 bit is growing, the vast majority of people are still running 32 bit Windows.

Don't worry. In the unlikely event that Rockstar were to produce a 64 bit edition of GTA:V, it would be alongside a 32 bit edition (most likely on the same set of discs). It would not be exclusively 64 bit.

What the HELL are you people on about?

32 bit apps can be made large address aware to handle more than 2gb of RAM on a 64bit machine.

As if it even matters.

Go to bed.
