ChillyPhilly
The press release for GTA V states that the game will take 'A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer'. But what can this include? If it's so significant as to include it in a press release, then surely there's huge changes coming to GTA. There's only so much Rockstar can do, though. Did the 'direction' need changing? Are they just trying to find a new formula? How do they know fans will be happy with it? So many questions. This topic hasn't been covered as such, so I thought I'd try opening up some thoughtful discussion on what this 'bold new direction' might just be all about. Keen to hear thoughts! tenpennyisplainevil
you're right. they spoke about V in a way that shows its going to be VERY different. but now, all we can do is wait for info
Zee
theyre going in a "bold new direction" alright, straight towards the Liquor cabinet. "Bold New Direction" "most ambitious title yet" and "living, breathing city" are all bullsh*t hype marketing phrases by the Housers whos interviews are rife with more bullsh*t than a Bush Administration press conference. Los Santos only is not a bold new direction in my opinion, its staying the course. they want to be ambitious, they can include SF and LV.

Orestone
I've been thinking about this too, and this statement from Rockstar kinda scares me if im beeing prefectly honest. Why? When things we've come to love do a radical change, it often changes to the worst. I love the formula GTA has been going with so far, and ill admit it, im afraid of change within these games. So what am I afraid of? GTA going really mainstream? GTA toning down the voilence? I really cant put my finger on it because I dont know what this press release really means. I think Im afraid that GTA will loose that "GTA Magic". Many people I know after playing GTA IV felt as the franchise lost alittle soul in making that game. I kinda half agree, i love GTA IV but i can admit it doesnt have that GTA Feeling to it. Anyways, not bashing Rockstar and im not bashing this bold new direction they are taking, I just hope they don't loose theyre magic touch

ChillyPhilly
If we believe the rumours - and if I'm remembering this one correctly - then we won't be 'restricted' to a certain area for a mission. But I'm stumped. It's got me curious. 'A bold, new direction...' Let's think. What's something, judging by the trailer, going into GTA V that we've never seen in the series before? A style of gameplay? GTA IV was marketed as follows: '...sets a new benchmark for open-world games...' So there's something to it, I'm sure. Samsuxx
Maybe that multiple protagonist rumour is becoming true? Maybe we can expect something like Pulp Fiction? Although I'd like to have just one character to focus on, this is the only way which comes to my mind. Edited January 4, 2012 by Samsuxx
Knife
This is the quote that got me, and why I put it in my signature. It's not just the normal fluff, they're literally saying it takes the series in a new direction. That strongly implies there's something significantly different about GTA V compared to IV or previous games.

I've been fortunate to watch the series grow like a child and despite the negativity GTA IV to me has done more good than bad. Others can think what they want. Even if I was the only GTA IV fan on earth I would still say that.
ChillyPhilly
I love IV, still play it. Had to get a new copy last year, but before I did that, I played through Lost and Damned and the Ballad of Gay Tony. But it just wasn't the same, I missed Niko's attitude as a protagonist and all the characters. There was just something to IV that the Episodes were lacking. Not saying any is of superior quality. Zip87
The most realistic thing I can equivalate this quote right now is this: San Andreas level of content, with some never before seen features + current gen engine and graphics OR Something related to multiplayer? Building your own empire and gang online?

Buffalo Soldier
Scary. I would hope this 'bold new direction' would of been to f*ck everything from GTA IV and go back to the golden days of San Andreas/Vice City - but that's clearly not going to be the case, I can see this being worse than GTA IV. I'm not trying to be negative, but as that other guy said - changes to a formula we're accustomed to, can often piss alot of people off. Don't get me wrong, if they've listened to the fans and have included alot of things we've been asking for years - then I'll embrace it, but if they've completely revamped the game and f*cked it over even more then I'll be pissed. I love IV, still play it. Had to get a new copy last year, but before I did that, I played through Lost and Damned and the Ballad of Gay Tony. Really? I thought BOGT was 10 times better than IV, the weapons, feel of the game, cars, missions etc I still play it when I'm playing Multilayer - if it was as long as IV then it would of been better but still, it's episodic content it was never going to be long. Alfabutt
ive never really sat down nd thought of this tbh i thought when i heard it aww cool this has to be positive but now when i think about it, they did say gta4 would change things yeah by friend interaction a mobile and the internet! which all 3 i wasnt so keen on although the friend thing they should keep just make it less annoying i already mentioned if he does have a son then maybe interperate that into it by say having a phone call from ex wife nd sayin come pick up ur son he wants to go the pier! great response would be (er sorry darling im in the middle of something here call me later)............as the hooker stops sucking! .but imo it could be the multi prog story the inclusion of animals maybe a regen health which i know people wont like i dunno looks like well just have to wait. Exactly. I thought GTAIV was intended to revolutionize everything in a bold new direction? I guess thats old hat now, last years game, another 60 dollars that didnt matter, and the Damage Control has begun (it was the first game on a new engine! that justifies it being GTAIII with prettier graphics!) but this time THIS time the games gonna be super-DUPER revolutionary! This ones REALLY gonna change everything we swear! Im sick of hearing it. Either show us something that is revolutionary, or stop talking about it. I wouldnt get nearly as mad as I do if it werent for these stupid hyperbole-filled interviews from R*

Victor Sulivan
Maybe they are going to add more choices for the player to make during the story. They did this a little in GTA IV but none of the decisions reaaly influenced the game apart from the final mission. I think it would be nice if they done it in a way similar to mass effect and mabye the option to choose what to say to people.
bluetops
Maybe a feature,or the game itself, will be very different from past GTAs or even all Open-World games? Maybe the story is very dramatic that if it is a movie it will be an automatic 10/10? Maybe AI,physics, and other technical details are in its finest? Maybe GTA will end this generation of consoles with a boom and bang? Yeah...It's all "Maybe"s
