Do you think that there will be skills that you can get better at in GTA5? Like for example biking skill where the more you ride bikes the better you become at riding bikes.

I hope not. That just didn't seem right in GTA SA. If you spend a lot of time driving in real life, the cars you drive don't magically become easier to handle, you just become a better driver. Any increase in driving ease while playing the game should be down to the player getting used to the way the cars handle, not the other way round. To be honest, I never liked any of the RPGish features in GTA SA - they just seem so out of place in my GTA.

Why do people always doubt topics like this?

What he means it this topic might get locked, but I hope not. I liked building up skills in San Andreas and I hope building up skills returns in GTA V. It made the game a lot more fun to me.

Well, if a moderator feels this topic should be locked, so be it. But at least I want a link where I can discuss this same topic.

I agree with you. Having skills made the game much more fun for me.

Of all skills in San Andreas, you chose the one of the few which were unrealistic. All other skills like cycling skill, stamina, muscle, swimming etc. are all fairly realistic. And even if they weren't, who gives a sh*t if they're not realistic? Killing 1000 people and not getting caught once is not realistic either.

I hate people saying stuff can't go into the game because it isn't realistic. Screw realism, and get out of this GTA 4 mindset everyone.

I like this topic, and I would like some skills to return. The RPG-ish stuff made the game feel even bigger, and gave me stuff to do, to level them up. I also liked unlocked gun skills, and dual weilding and stuff, as it made up for the lack of gun attachments.

Yeah, sorry about that, when I read the topic title I thought you were only talking about driving skill. I've kinda got mixed feelings about it. I mean, sure, it'd be nice for the game to reward you for doing stuff over and over again, so, on second thought, go on then. Hopefully no one will notice I've just done a 180 degree opinion turn. blush.gif

The skill levels could be okay in GTA - I'd rather get increased stamina from running a lot than from twelve bloody Paramedic missions. Things like muscle can get the f*ck out though. I mean, it would be okay if it only went up, but the way it worked in GTA SA, where you had to keep working out and eating to stop it from going down instead, was bullsh*t. They should have just had it as a 'Melee' skill, which would increase the more you attack people with fists or baseball bats.

So yeah, I'm all for skill levels, provided they run on a strictly reward-based system.

In that report of the leaked info something similar was said to be in the game regarding improvement of certain activities.

Just rumors tho. Rumors because there is no news, same sh*t different day in my opinion.

why not? its their most ambitious game as of yet, so it should have everything SA had, but better.

Haha that's OK man, we can still be friends. tounge.gif

However I don't get what you mean with "reward-based system". About the muscle stat in San Andreas, in my opinion it's fine the way it is. For some reason, I very rarely have to eat in order to maintain the muscle level. If the player had to eat frequently, then I understand how it could get annoying, but I played San Andreas for an extremely long time, and I only had to eat a couple of times, so personally, it wasn't a big deal.

As long as they don't auto degrade. Muscle was annoying. I even just used the muscle cheat, but having to even do that every 10 minutes got annoying. And to pile on the stupid, they made it so SWIMMING DOES NOT SUSTAIN MUSCLE OR UPGRADE IT. SWIMMING IS A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. IT SHOULD ADD TO MUSCLE. GET IT RIGHT! Of course, it was probably because I also never eat in the game, but I use the no hunger code, so that shouldn't be an issue.

IMO skills should be more specialized like stealth skills, demolition, safe cracking etc. Skills that are actually fun to build up instead of the boring SA skills.

Hot-wiring Cars

You should be taught how to hotwire cars, learning it in one of the first missions. As you progress through the game you'll slowly become faster. At first, it will take 10-15 seconds, but as you steal more cars, it will become incredible faster, up to 3-5 seconds. (as fast as Niko)

Hand-to-hand-combat

The first 15 missions should be based around hand-to-hand combat and melee weapons. This hasn't been done in a Grand Theft Auto game, and there are so many possibilities. Guns and weapons should 'build up' the suspense and action as progress through the story, just like Rockstar's Manhunt.

Speed/Stamina

The more you stay in shape, the faster you should be able to run - and I'd like to see a noticeable improvement. I think running from the police will be very important in this game, so I assume this will be something the player will want to work on.

I think taking 10-15 seconds is too much, even though it can be improved. As for the point on hand-to-hand combat, I definitely agree. I love it when a game starts out slow, because as you said it builds suspense.

It was a nice addition to have some RPG elements, it gave you a sense of achievement, and it was a nice little thing to work on, maybe not make it quite so easy to level up your skills in terms of driving and motorbike riding, not only these elements though, i would love to see the gym return, pilot school was fun, so was driving and boating and motorbiking school, i really hope they return.

@bcutajar, I am pretty sure that's how San Andreas had it, you drove the car more, and it was easier to handle..

Rockstar and others commenting on the original GTA San An design you're referring to as 'skills' called the same thing RPG in terms of how it related to other games, though it's not an RPG per-se, various items had a learning curve; biking, flying, shooting, driving, as we all know. You want flying, boating and driving schools to return?? Not gonna happen! Bank on that! haha

Why do say that? What's wrong with having those schools returning? In GTA V there are planes, so the character must be able to fly them; but it wouldn't make sense that a guy who probably has never flown planes before would instantly get the skills necessary. I think having some sort of flying school or its equivalent would make sense to be in the game.

Trust me: to progress from this:

To this:

...Would be very satisfying. You go from having to open the door by various means (different animations each time) AND THEN start the Sucker, attracting a lot of unwanted attention, to being able to casually unlock any vehicle and drive away like you owned it. Not all vehicles would have electronic immobilisers, so you'd have to exercise discretion & display judgement.

*Waits for the inevitable "This is Grand Theft Auto, not Car Stealing Simulator!!1" response.*

this, and it adds to game time, it's fun (IMO), how else would the gamer himself learn to fly? you can learn how to do special moves (like the PIT manoeuvre and such in SA), which also adds to gameplay and fun. then weapon handling, it was fun to improve your skill IMO, and also adds to gameplay. it was epic imo. and R* will probably implement it into the game, cos according to them its their most ambitious one, and skills are very ambitious smile.gif

The handling in GTA SA was mostly easy; if anything the increaed driving skill simply made it easier to roll the car over from a wreck. I tested this with two saves. On one, I had half to almost filled driving skill bar. On the other, new game, no bar. Drove Ryder's Picador and compared it; not much of a difference.

Driving Skill and other "skills" wouldn't be a bad idea. The more you drive, bike, boat, fly, the better you get at it. I don't see why R* won't do this again.

What you just said, blue, pretty much supports what I'm saying: "The more you do it the better you get".

This is the one thing I hate about the IV era protagonists:

Niko was in the Army - learned to fly and boat?

Johnny never was in the army - not may helicopters to fly

Luis was in the army - learned to fly helicopters and I guess boats too?

What I'm trying to point out is that, unfortuantely, R* may or may not go back to schools and will instead continue this stupid method of just giving a crappy backstory as an excuse for the player being able to handle any and almost every vehicle, water and aircraft in the game.

Where is the creativity?

Skills should be like they were in San Andreas. GTA 4 was sorely lacking in this field.

GTA IV was lacking in A LOT of things. Henceforth the reason we have GTA V coming soon inlove.gif

@ SGT johnson Luis was never in the army your thinking of his dad Luis just got a helicopter permit and johnny could have learned from jim but johnny never canonicaly flown a helicopter you just get one for him and Niko was in the army like you said so they most likely taught him and Luis probably had experience for boats from being with Tony? you got me on that one
