_Rob_
If you get a backwards compatible one, ie one that can play your PS2 games then yes. Otherwise you lose a big chunk of games, plus if they are popular where you are then they will be easier to get hold of.

Cheat
You're not that old, are ya? It's pretty impossible to take the release of the PS4 into consideration yet, I mean, it could be announced within months just to piss you off or it could be released in a matter of years, who knows. That being said, you should compare the exclusive games for the PS3, the 360 and the PS2 to what he likes to play and so on. If the PS2 really is still popular in there, of course you'd be saving a lot of money by buying it, but remember that it's the first one to become old and replaced, hope I helped. _Rob_
Does the Wii have nice games? Yes it does, some are awesome, some are not, as with most consoles, it's definitely the best console for local multiplayer in my opinion. But often the console exclusives like GTA, RDR etc are not on it so perhaps not the best choice.
Cosmic Gypsy
is it worth getting a PS3?... it depends Do you already own an Xbox 360? if yes then probably no, unless your fed up of paying for online. People say the xbox 360 has no lag but in my experience, thats really wrong. 4 of my mates have had xbox 360's, and each one, no matter what internet provider they had, lagged.. 1 of my mates even brought his 360 to MY house and it lagged like f*ck and i was like "are you actually paying for this service?" he was like "yeeah -_-" 1 of my mates owned a ps3 first of all, then got an xbox because he was fed up with the ps3's failures, after owning 2 xbox's he went back to ps3.. lol. PS3's are ok for surfin the internet, some sites dont work as well as you would like, but overall its ok. it's online performance is easily on par with the 360. and its free, so thats cool. everythings easy to understand and use on the ps3 (like the xbox) which is also a plus. if u like custon soundtracks when playing games, go for the xbox... xbox also has superior social features. like voice mail messages and cross game chat i think. trip
First off...I'm no fan boy and I really don't want to start any sort of console war but....I would suggest an xbox over a ps3. The price alone is more appealing, and then there is that whole larger library aspect. The online fee isn't so bad - what is it like 50 bucks for a year? That's not so bad when you break it down. Not that I have a little brother or anything, but I was in similar shoes with exclusives. I'm a pc gamer, and was forced to join the console fold due to Madden not doing pc releases anymore. I'm glad I joined since I was able to enjoy RDR. My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens
Sunrise Driver
and then there is that whole larger library aspect Which for sure he played on PC. And those multiplatform games that are not on PC they're on PS3. +PS3 has better exclusives IMO. See for yourself if you prefer Uncharted, Heavy Rain, MotorStorm over PGR, Forza, GeoW or vice versa. Menaced
I'd say go for it if it's affordable. The PlayStation 3 has some decent exclusives and a free online service. If you're indecisive between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 then, and I'm going to try say this without sounding too biased or fanboy-ish, I'd personally recommend going for the PlayStation 3. I was contemplating whether to get an Xbox 360 for Christmas this year, but dismissed the idea after I found that most of the Xbox 360 "exclusives" could either be played on my PC or were making the move to the PlayStation 3, like the Metro series for example. If your little brother chooses the PlayStation 3, he'll be able to play all the console-exclusive titles like RDR while also being open to the PlayStation 3 exclusives, too, like the Uncharted, God of War, Gran Turismo, Killzone and Resistance series. Plus, what's not to like about paying nothing to play online?

If he's a younger kid it might be better for him to get a 360 because it's the, how do I say it, less adult of the consoles. It's more friendly to younger people and those who aren't necessarily big gamers- or who want to become gamers. The Playstation is more like a computer and isn't quite so straightforward in the way it does things. Don't get wrapped up in the debate over which console is "better" because that is endless and you won't get any real information from it. Both consoles have tons of games so there's no real advantage there. I'd say go with a 360 if it's for a kid.
coin-god
Thanks for the info guys, I think we will go with the PS3. Even if it's about to be replaced by the PS4 it will still be popular (like the PS2). The games will still be good and even get cheaper. I don't think my brother will have a problem with learning how to use it, he knows how to handle a computer pretty good, the PS3 should be no problem. Someone suggested comparing exclusives, i would do that if i were you, the one game that had me sold for the PS3 was Uncharted, that is fantastic, and i am pretty certain if i was 10 i would enjoy it, just as i enjoyed games like Spyro and Mario. One thing to remember, because of Microsoft's rules, exclusives that are on Xbox can come over to PS3 if the developer chooses (such as mass effect), but not the other way around. I won't lie my post to goin-god is towards PS3, because that it the console i prefer for reasons stated. @Cheat, your download speed difference is not really a fair judge of which downloads faster, there are some variables to take into account, things such as server load for the online networks, or how many people were connected to your ISP during both downloads, so taking these into consideration, had circumstances been different the XBL download could have taken longer, for reliability i would do the test several times, after which you can actually make a fair judge of which network had better download speeds. I would not be surprised if xbox took the cake in the end, since you are paying a small fee, there will be benefits that you won't get on a free service, if you do decide to try the test several times i would love to hear the results. Whether it be a system update, a game update or whatever, the 360's always twice as fast. I fully agree with this. My connection isn't very fast as for today standards (2Mb/s), but it's all right for my needs. Update for PS3, even small won't download faster than at least half of hour (one of them was downloading around 2 hours), when on Xbox updates are downloaded in 5, 10 minutes. Another issue: How it is possible that PS3 can't download anything from the net when I am playing. Download is stopped every time when something is using internet connection (find me a game that don't use it today as most games even use internet connection during single player) and in result I downloaded Borderlands around three weeks. Of course I could turn on console and go somewhere, but it's just wasting of electricity and time. On other hand xbox is downloading everything without single problems and download is stopped only sometimes (during sending times to server in FM4 for example). Third issue: Why the hell every demo or game on PS3 has to be installed? Of course, if I downloaded it three weeks, 15 more minutes won't kill me, but xbox doesn't have this problem. Download and play it. What next? You will have to read EULA licence before installing the demo and browsing when you want to install it? Leave installing and all that crap to PC users. The OS on the 360 is very straightforward as is the messaging system, the layout of the menus, and the functionality. The complex settings are tucked way away in the corner and everything related to Xbox Live and your games take front and center. It doesn't expect you to know anything before owning one. Any media center features are step-by-step and are of the typical Microsoft hand-holding nature to minimize complexity, and besides just the whole look of the dashboard is much more gamey. The Playstation functions much more like a PC than a game console. The game saves and game data are stored in a file explorer, it has deep video and streaming settings that the 360 lacks, and the OS by default is very minimalist and offers you no tips or hints as to how to work any of it. It just sorta expects you to be familiar with gaming when you pull it out of the box. It's just the whole philosophy of the console, which is not a bad thing at all. I have owned more than one 360 and I am currently a PS3 owner, so I would prefer everyone buy a PS3 so I have people to play with. The Network is totally free which is a HUGE bonus. But in all honesty, the 360 is more made for kids. Plus the large majority of the gamers on 360 are younger than the ones on PS3. Just go play a game of CoD on both consoles and you can tell which system all the kids own. There are reasons for that. goin-god I wouldn't be worried about the Playstation 4 any time soon. Again, the 360 is older than the PS3 and neither company has made any waves whatsoever about upcoming consoles. I think you're in good shape for at least a couple years. Alrighty, i will believe you guys, that's interesting, but i have noticed that PS3 updates do take quite a long time, as for downloading full games, well i don't have a comparison with the xbox there, doing a quick google search, sony's servers are sucky, many people say netflix streams great, but anything from PSN is slower than it should be. @Forty, that makes sense, mostly, but any halfwit can pretty quickly figure out how to use the PS3, even if it takes a little longer, and surely a 10 year old can either work it out, or know how to google search it, if you mean kid friendly, i would think kids under 8 or 9. ryuclan
Why don't you just ask your brother what he wants? This is going to be his console right? Ok you say he wants a ps3, then if you guys can afford it then get it. If you are lucky you can find a Backwards compatible system which would be soo much better. I own an xbox and I love it. Of course I see games that are exclusive and I can't play, but that's going to be the case with any console you buy. I like being able to listen to whatever music I want while playing games. I love the arcade titles and the indie games (beat hazard, zpy2k,) the controller is perfect for me and all my friends have it. Ask your brother what games he is looking forward to, which controller he likes best, probably the ps3 since I'm assuming you have ps2. If this console is going to be his and you're just playing it, then let him decide on his own and deal with it. tuff_luv_capo
I've sold mine, two of my friends have as well and my friend who just bought his is already regretting it. Basically the only people I know who have them are broke and can't afford to get a 360 without trading their ps3 and losing a ton of money in the process. PSN server is also always down, and they always get content late.

You forgot to mention the 50%+ failure rate of the 360, the fact that which controller is more comfortable is purely personal opinion. And that PS3 has just as many awesome titles as 360. Not to mention that at current prices, after paying for Live for three months, you've already payed just as much as you would have for a PS3. And my 360 has to download a new update damn near every day, which is really annoying when you just want to hurry up and play. Edited January 3, 2012 by leik oh em jeez!
