Suggestion for what kind of new car

Just make sure it isn't a previous generation Accent, if they still even have those on the lots at this point. The current Accent is light years ahead in terms of quality and refinement.

It's still a Hyundai...

Someone evidently hasn't been in a Hyundai in recent years.

Hyundai is to Kia what Lexus is to Toyota (Infiniti-Nissan, Acura-Honda), this is on top of the fact that today's Kias are amazing compared to the old Hyundais.

I think the Japanese car industry should be seriously concerned before they get shafted by Korea, like America was by Japan in the 90s.

Aside from the Genisis coupe, everything they make is still pretty dull. So I guess, Hyndai is like toyota in that regard.

Their Mercedes clone, (the Sonota I think) is pretty snazzy but once you realize it isn't actually a Mercedes it loses its luster.

On a side note, their cars were deemed cool enough to use in the movie Inception.

They've improved alright, but the only Hyundais I'd ever get is are the Genesis Coupe 3.8 V6 and the Santa Fe. I've had a chance to drive a Santa Fe and it was a cool car. Genesis seems cool, but until I (if ever) get my hands on of those, I can't really comment on it.

I've also driven the new ix20 (they call it a mini mpv?!) and it was a pain to drive or even to sit in. Reminded me of the rental Nissan Tiida (Versa in US).

I am kind of wondering why you're wanting a new car. The only upside to a new car is the warranty and I don't really see much going wrong with it under warranty with as little as you drive. Than once it's conveniently out of its warranty, it will go to sh*t due to not being used enough like the previous golf.

Also, the old golf sounded like it had a ton of little things you could have done yourself and shouldn't have cost near that much to fix.

Also, I don't get how buying a new car and spending 20 grand wins out over fixing a very low mileage car and spending a grand on work.

Most of it boils down to me not being a car guy, and not really taking proper care of my cars. For me a car is a necessary evil. I've always been more of a bike person, and I do take good care of my bikes.

I'm also weird with how I manage my money. Honestly, it is easier for me to just budget a few hundred a month as a planned expense then deal with an unexpected couple of grand smack to the head.

I think I'm learning a lesson the hard way with my current woes. My next car will be taken in for regular maintenance and not just it's once a year visit I'm used to doing.

Trip, you recall I bought two 1988 Sedan Devilles off eBay for just over $500 each? That's American luxury at a very nice price, and it's four doors so you have some storage space inside and the trunk. A 4.5 liter V8 in that year only, you get about 22 MPG city I believe, some times better, some times not. Still, I'd buy one again from my experience. I also looked at other Pontiac cars that just feel nice to drive in, nothing overtly sporty like my Firebird. The Bonneville for example. And yeah, a Grand Am! haha

As far as hatchbacks, I guess the Plymouth Horizon, Dodge Omni are those? I hate them, however

I am partial to GM, so Chevrolet has many to choose from, over the years

Here's something on the 88, the last of the downsized Devilles which makes it a better parking size requirement

Think you might opt for a small truck, More utility space the hauling a family around? My sister and me were driving back from our folks in a KIA truck, it has a sliding panel door on one side and passenger space for 4, the rest is room to pack things. I don't know price on those. I really was a coupe guy, but I liked certain 4 doors where it was spacey and not cramped interior

Fozzy Fozborne

+ 1 For the Mazda 3 hatchback. I would recommend the new Skyactive engine, rather than the older 2.5 because it`s nearly as powerful but much more efficent. I don't know if they offer that with a manual in your area but it couldn't hurt to have a back-to-back test drive with the two engines.

My 2011 sedan is 3000 miles strong with no buyer's remorse.

You should also test out the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. It offers nice features like AWD, a glass roof and a very long warranty for a very reasonable price. Just make sure you test the engine on a steep hill to see if it's powerful enough for your needs.

I doubt he's really needing the power that much (his old golf was a 115 hp model if it's a 99). I recommended the 2.5 Mazda 3 hatch just for the reason that they seem specced better right ouf the box than the smaller engined versions. I'm not sure if the skyactive cars would be specced as well.

Edit - reading up on it, the skyactive powertrain sounds like complete sh*t. And only comes with an automatic. And I can't recommend an auto when it just means more maintenance for bullsh*t filters and fluids.

How much do you want for the golf?

I've decided to keep it.

I just got her back from the garage. Long story short: When they ran my engine number it comes up as the American version. I have an odd German engine(odd for living in the states). They basically where going off wrong error codes. That is half the reason it took so long - they were perplexed to see some errors come up for sh*t that was working fine. They said they had to call some people - I'm guessing they just called my retired mechanic and he clued them into the different tool needed to read my car. My old mechanic had to buy the tool especially to work on my car(at no charge to me). Since he is retired, he prob just gave it to them.

The only problem now is my wife seems dead set on a new car. Thanks to this thread she has a list and has begun the research.

I really do want to thank everyone for the suggestions. My wife claims she is getting her drivers license this year. I've always said I will buy her whatever car she wants after she gets her license. I imagine it will be off of the list created by this thread. Although, I've been fooled by her before when she says she is getting her license confused.gif .

If you want one of the best beaters, consider the 88 Deville, cheap for it's age, the under-sizing, and good for the Cadillac quality that's in-bred. I was not very keen on that downsized look, but just check out some of the custom mods the "pimps" have done to make even that car turn heads! haha

F*cks sake you moron, read the topic description and understand what Trip is after. I'm completely fed up of you're seeming complete inability to read even the most simple of posts.

Shut the hell up, he was looking for a new, small, more economical car to replace a Golf and you suggested an 80's Cadillac.

You are f*cking brain-dead and if there were truly justice, you never would have been let back.

Those VW Scirocco's are rather sexy, do they sell them in the states?

Nope, VW won't bring them here. F*cking bastards.

Sciroccos are just Golf's underneath...they are not very fast either, performance isn't the plus side. But the looks are nice. Then again you have to pay quite much for the looks.

Not very fast in comparison to what? Are we talking 0-60 times et cetera, which everyone knows is basically utterly irrelevant, or are we talking lap times, or point-to-point on-road performance? In their price and body-style bracket (we're talking new here) the only car that's faster I can think of is the Megane RS250. The I6 1-series are faster but they're also considerably more expensive- not far off the price of a Scirocco R- and the Focus ST is old-hat now. Faster, in the real world, than any Mini too, up to and including the JCW models. They're also not quite "just a Golf"- same floor-pan but different suspension, wider track and adaptive damping as standard. Cheaper than a Golf GTi too- well, if you compare identical specs, anyway.

Waaaa....don't mention the Scirocco. I had a Corrado and loved it. Unfortunately, it was taken out of commission by a 900 year old lady on meds who was driving a huge Caddy. We aren't even allowed to talk about that car in this house.

Quick back story:

Since you don't need a car where I live, I am one of the few people in my circle of friends who actually has a car and license to drive. That means I am the lucky one who has to tote people around now and then. My friend down the street was just as bummed at my car being in the shop as I was since I am his ride to and from the beer store.

Anyway...my friend knew I might have to get a new car. When we went to the beer store yesterday he had a great line when I told him I'm keeping the Golf. "Good. Where would you find a new car that smells like cigarettes and piss?"

So 'don't need a car where I live' and 'bum rides with a friend that has a car' are pretty much the same thing then?

Now I'm thinking you should buy your wife whatever cheap car she wants, sell the golf, and treat yourself with another Corrado.

Seconded. Best option out there.

The bumming rides is only to the beer store...and that is out of laziness usually or some other excuse. Also remember that my friends aren't youngsters. My beer store buddy sometimes calls with old man excuses like "waaa my knee hurts". Thanks to the internet, I haven't had to drive anyone somewhere to pick up a tv or other large item in many many years.

I would kill for another Corrado, but it won't happen. They are just too old at this point.

I will also be surprised if my wife actually does get her license. She did say for real this time, but she has kind of said that in the past too.

Too old...whaaaa? You know you can't say things like that to a guy that DD's a 26 year old BMW right? A final year Corrado, is only about 4 years older than the golf right? 94 or 95? That's not that old. I definitely don't think you drive near enough to justify needing a car that's newer than that.

New cars just seem easier and more reliable in my head. Once you finance one out it pretty much just boils down to a few dollars extra a month in the payment between new and pre-owned.

With a new car, you're just paying for a piece of mind warranty. There's not really anything easier or more reliable about them. They just have a safety net. If you're only driving 37k in 13 years, I really doubt the car would see enough use to ever use it before it ran out. And from what I know, you make more money than probably 95% of this forum. I'd think an occasional use Corrado wouldn't put too much of a dent on you when it comes to expenses.

Old cars can be reliable. I'm driving my 45 year old car everyday, and it hasn't left me at the side of the road once. I trust it considerably more than my 11 Year old Volvo.
