Slight Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

My friend Tim wants to upgrade his GeForce GT 230 to something under the €100.

The site I use is http://www.alternate.nl.

I was thinking about GeForce GTS 450?

It's not such an amazing card, but it'll do the trick for Modern Warfare 3 (and possibly AC Revelations).

I'm going to install it myself together with Tim, but the problem is the PSU.

The PSU is a 400W one, I'll upload the picture I took later today.

Another site his mom trusts is http://dynabyte.nl.

So, what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance,

Exxon

GTS450 could be OK, but avoid DDR3 versions (like the one you posted). The only ones worth buying are those with GDDR5 memory. But anyway, HD6770 seems like a better option in that price range.

We're also going to need a new PSU.

Any advice?

I was thinking about an XFX PRO550W Core Edition which can also be found at alternate.

Or do you know any cheaper ones?

I guess it'll be the first one.

On the AMD site it says the HD 6770 needs 450W or would the 400w be enough?

By the way, his mom contacted Dynabyte and they said that the GT520 was about the same as the GT230 and it was fine for gaming sigh.gif

400W is more than enough, HD6770 consumes about 100W at full (surreal) load. Though this Thermaltake is a good option as well; it's more or less the same as OCZ StealthXStream2.

His mom didn't like us whining yesterday and said 'Here's €35 and get yourself a new one' tounge2.gif

But anyway, he decided to go for the one I posted (GTS450 with GDDR3) because it's the cheapest of all.

He said he won't be buying a new PSU turn.gif

Do you think it's enough?

You never know with these PSU's which come with pre-build systems confused.gif

It's OK. Anyway, I find buying GTS450 DDR3 an idiotic move.

Yeah, I advised him to get the GDDR5 version, but he said that the GDDR3 would be fine.

He doesn't game that much, and isn't such hardcore that he wants to play everything at max wink.gif

That I can understand, but HD6770 is like 20-30% faster, and it costs mere €6 more...

Ah well ... he's happy with it. And be honest, it's a pretty card for it's price turn.gif

By the way, he plays AC Revelations at very high settings.

He also plays DiRT 3 at near-max; literally everything at High at 1440x900 and AA at second-highest at +30 fps smile.gif

I was saying the opposite... HD6770 costs €6 (~7%) more and is 20-30% more powerful. Does it make GTS450 DDR3 a good option? Hell no.

Besides, I don't know why did you even bother asking since our suggestions were ignored. dontgetit.gif

Oh, my bad turn.gif

Main reason is just because they didn't like it that they had to upgrade (parents and brother).

I wanted to make sure that there wasn't a deal that was way better (which there actually was).

Money was just a big deal, and they just decided to pick one of 'em and get over it.

I also wanted to make sure they didn't need a new PSU, and that's why I asked you.

Maybe I wasn't that clear as I thought I was.

Ah well, thanks for your help anyway wink.gif
