Niko's Serbian...

Recommended Posts

lol232

I was glad he was my ethnicity when I heard it, but his Serbian Language was pretty bad! The way he spoke English was PERFECT for a Serbian that just learned Speaking English, I'm talking about his accent.

But when we talk about his native language, that's just...

Like one on YouTube Said "Priča kao da ga Bumbar ujeo za Kurac!";

"Talks like a hornet bit his d*ck!"

He talked exactly like a guy on Gradual Report.

I love Rockstar for setting him to be Serbian, but couldn't they find a Serb in U.S. to speak only at least Serbian lines for them? I mean, Chicago is literally littered with Serbs,

but no, the ask an American to do that for them.

I am still thankful to Rockstar for that but A feeling little odd.

That sounded more to Russian first I heard it.

It's okay to get an American to speak those lines, but still...

Good, pick me up in the next hour.

anyway, Niko doesn't really speak Serbian at many points of the game, its mainly in the first missions and a couple of lines later.

I understand what you mean, i'm Mexican and when they did Mexico in RDR it really felt like Mexico but you could instantly tell that some actors weren't mexican.

(Allende for example)

The only one who did actually sound mexican to me was De Santa, the rest had a few mispronounciations here and there.

@Hydro_ PlayboyX Yeah, but still...

@Ace_Ray False! He speaks a lot Serbian, just a little less near the end,

he speaks also when you fall or crash the car, or people using horn on you so you could move.

@locolow2011 Well, yeah, that's true, there are even more Mexicans in Southern U.S.,

Example is Los Angeles.

@MAN IN THE DARK Yeah, like one or two...

Are you Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian or something to even know that?

I can understand that you guys from the eastern European area might be upset, but admittedly to someone who's not familiar with that language it sounds pretty authentic. Funny enough there're some German pedestrians on the streets of LC and when they talk random stuff it sounds okay to me which means that either R* put more effort into the NPCs or Serbian is a damn hard language to pronounce. Personally I go with the second option.

This!

Which I totally do not understand! It should be easier to pronounce, but I guess some people aren't coordinated enough to read each letter in front of their eyes confused.gif Plus we have simple vowels.

Well indeed but Serbo-Croatian and Bosnian, basically Southern Slavic language, is pretty easy to read, not learn, but read, all you have to do is learn how to pronounce the letters.

Ja, indeed, I know German a bit, and in IV NPC's have weird accent,

it's a bit different from what I learn. But yeah...

@DarkKingBernard

Pa jes, akcenat/naglasak je dobar kako on pirča Engleski ali Srpski je malo uvrnuto, priča slično kao onaj Danny iz Gradual Report tounge.gif

English:

Yeah, accent is pretty good when he speaks English, but Serbian is a little weird, he speaks like that guy called Danny from Gradual Report.

Anyways, still, you dodn't get the point of my question,

Why did they had to chose an American to speak Serbian lines when Chicago is littered with Serbs, and example German language, I don't know what city is littered with Germans but still, but they still did a good job with all those languages (Serbian, German, Greek, Albanian, Russian, etc), but still, damn!

Yeah I was pretty disappointed with the accent it sounded like the actor for Niko was learning serbian which is almost same as croatian (I'm Croatian) and bosnian its a real shame that R* didn't get a serbian actor to voice Niko when he's talking serbian.

If you watched "behind the enemy lines" you will see how perfect serbian sound from Sahsha, niko prototype. Actually that actor Vladimir Mashkov, who played sasha could get that role in IV. But he turn it down.

the majority of us won't notice, but yeah i aggree - they should cast a serbian as a serbian.

You see it everywhere, americans casted as italians also (Assassin's Creed - Ezio). Some kind of patriotism/racism in the industry (joking)?

I must admit it didn't affect my playing experiance, but If i could talk serbian, i imagine it would.

I agree. Cockstar did a terrible job with Nikos voice, and it just exemplifies their lack of care.

It's not like Niko speaks much serbian in this game, so it's ok for me.

I think they focused more on his accent when he speaks english, which sounds pretty good.

@Zee: Is there a reason why you flame about GTA IV in any thread where is a opportunity to do so?

If you don't like GTA IV, then don't play it and don't post at GTA IV message boards.

And lack of care? What I like the most about Rockstar is their love for the details.

Da bilo je moćno čuti kada govori a posebno kada psuje.Šteta što glumac koji je dao glas Niki nije se bolje pripremio, nije tako teško naučiti ono malo riječi.

English:Yes it was cool to hear him talking and especially when curses. To bad that voice actor didn't prepare better,it wasn't that difficult to learn those few words.

I'm sorry, is it the "attention to detail" that makes ACTUAL SERBIAN PEOPLE who play the game think nikos serbian accent is sh*t?

Well, they could just hired a guy who wouldn't even try to speak a single word serbian and cut the part where Niko is supposed to speak serbian. That's what I'ld call lazy.

Of course, they could also hire a serbian voice actor to do the job. But maybe these weren't qualified enough for this role.

The voice of Niko had to be rememberable and had to give him a personality, and the voice actor had to show emotions in his role.

Please keep in mind that Niko speaks around 95% of the game english.

If Micheal Hollicks voice was perfect for the english part in Rockstars opinion, then they would hire him instead of someone who could actually speak serbian, but wouldn't be as fitting as the other voice actors for the english part of Nikos role.

Micheal Hollicks did, in my opinion, a good job as voice actor for Niko Bellic.

He even won Best Male Voice Actor award at the Video Game Awards 2009 for his role as Niko Bellic.

Of course he couldn't speak serbian as good as a person from Serbia, but he at least tried to.

And for non-serbian persons who hear it, it does not sound that bad.

But I see what you want to say there, and maybe I didn't make it clear what I was referring to when I wrote that.

With 'attention to the detail', I didn't mean the serbian spoken by Niko, I mean the attention to the detail in this game in general, referring to the 'exemplifying their lack of care'.

That's quite usual, It's not that easy finding a voice actor who can speak understandable English with a Russian (or Serbian or any other eastern European) accent, who's also able to talk Serbian like a native. That's going to be real tough and expensive, and lets be fair, no american is going to notice the difference.

Same goes for my language, I'm Dutch, but whenever they speak dutch in a American movie or anything, they actually speak German because its much easier finding a German speaking (voice)actor and nobody will probably hear the difference. Most typical was one of the latest South Park episodes where they described a Dutch holiday and sang a dutch song in German (which did sound kinda funny).

I found it pretty funny how Niko went from "My English not so good" to producing perfect sentences just missions later. Ah well, they couldn't have had him speaking broken English for the whole game.

he is more likely croatian than serbian, niko is croatian name, and in serbian language they remove [ij] part of the word (example-croatian: snijeg....serbian: sneg)(snijeg-snow) and niko speaks like a bosnian or croatian with ij part of the word(cant xeactly remember where)

Same things with us Brazilians, but in our case its even worse, most people assume we speak Spanish here in Brazil so they just put an American actor to impersonate a Spanish Accent to represent Brazilians... -_- But hey atleast the Brazilians in GTA IV were authentic Brazilians! Who spoke both English & Portuguese Fluently! ^^

Good Job Rockstar!
