el_roy1985
el-roy - well, Im speaking of a 144 sq mile 12 by 12 mile one with all the associated detail. Flying over THAT much city would cause performance drops...chech out GTA IV. My bad, for some reason I didnt quite realize the size you were referring to. Somethin like a 6 x 15 map would probably be reasonable. Although, I dont think the problem is size, its how fast it has to render new areas and to what detail. The higher you go, the further you see but less detail is needed. I think the most important factor will br disc space.
GTAknowledge
It may be 2 times than RDR. Can consoles handle such a map with so much detail?
Magic_Al
It may be 2 times than RDR. Can consoles handle such a map with so much detail? Depends how much of it you can see at once. Red Dead Redemption is pretty detailed and you can see a very far distance. Rockstar streams the environment so you can see far away in low detail and close up in high detail. Pop in is the transition from low to high as things enter your nearby area. GTA SA is huge, and pretty detailed in terms of variety of stuff that's in the world if not polygons and textures, but only takes half the space of a double layer DVD, so a world with twice the detail of GTA SA would fit on a DVD even without any improvement in compression since 2004. I'm not worried.

GTAknowledge
Would anyone be disappointed with a map the exact or similar size to San Andreas?
SCLASS
Yes - 4 by 4 miles is pathetic...for a metropolis AND countryside....it will be bigger. To give you an idea IV was around 3 by 1.7 miles in size...
Magic_Al
Would anyone be disappointed with a map the exact or similar size to San Andreas? No, because in GTA SA they miniaturize a whole state (two states really, highlights of California and Nevada) which makes it like a miniature golf course version of reality. Using all that space for one city and surroundings would feel like a realistic city, maybe not realistic Los Angeles but a real small town (but with big-city buildings in it). Hove Beach
I'll just copy what I posted in that Dan Houser interview thread last night: That map seems way off. I really don't think RDR is 3-4x bigger than SA. I made a map comparison not that long ago using the main trails of RDR and the trails in Red County in SA. The trails are of very similar sizes. Here's the trail comparison: http://oi40.tinypic.com/25jyxd0.jpg and here's the map I ended up with : http://oi43.tinypic.com/5v2n13.jpg I scaled the RDR trails to be a bit smaller than the SA ones to leave room for some error. I in no way claim this to be a factual representation of the actual map sizes. I simply used my own in game observations from each game to scale the maps to each other. Nice job, so do you happen to have done comparing GTA IV with either RDR or SA?
Hove Beach
Would anyone be disappointed with a map the exact or similar size to San Andreas? No not at all. The thing is I cant see how GTA V is gonna be bigger than RDR. RDR is mostly nature and that doesnt take as much time as creating an equal sized map with "individual" buildings. The few towns in RDR were few and small! So no I would definitely not be disappointed, but since houser says its gonna be very large I must trust his words, cus why would he lie? QuentinNourisson
Given this recent interview with Dan Houser, Dan Houser: GTA V will have a "Very big map": http://www.gta5info.com/apps/blog/show/108...a-very-big-map- and Rockstar's promise for this to be the largest game they have created, just how big do you guys think the map will be? What size limit will consoles have for creating such large detailed maps? What is the minimum size map you guys would consider acceptable? RDR was the biggest map we've seen from Rockstar, however given it's setting, it wasn't a very detailed environment. GTA IV's map was a decent size, but still noticeable smaller than the GTa San Andreas map. My opinion is that the map will need to be at least the size of the San Andreas map, but likely be 1.5x it's land size. Will this be Rockstar's biggest map? Some comparisons: Comparison of GTA and other game maps (not 100% accurate): http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads...ame-worlds2.jpg The map will be at least 4x BIGGER than GTA IV's map (:

tenpennyisplainevil
if its their biggest map ever, it better not be LS only. then it would be one awesome city and around it wayy to much rural landscape with little towns.
DS 17
WOW hasnt any 1 seen that Have confirmed ,1.5 the times of SA ,was in an interview not long ago..... Peace. . . . . . . I guess if it wasn't fake this info would be written several times before. So no, they haven't said anything concrete about the map size, but it will be "big". Magic_Al
Detail of GTA SA 6000x6000 1 pixel = 1 square meter "satellite" map vs. RDR fully zoomed map. Same comparison zoomed out: GTA V ≥ GTA SA > RDR
The Hitch
The San Andreas map was beautiful! Since they are saying GTA V will be bigger than any other map in the GTA series, I'm thinking it will be bigger than San andreas and maybe more beautiful. GTA SA map was a illusion of being big when in reality it was a tab bit bigger then IV This. The visibility in San Andreas was 1km. Even then there was a rock from which you could see both San Ferreiro and Los Santos. In reality visibility for something like the US bank tower should be 25km, which is the equivalent of putting 5 San Andreas maps side to side The roads deliberately went around the countryside rather than through it otherwise the journey between the 2 cities would have been under a minute. I still think the size and variety was perfect though. Just enough desert just enough forrest and just enough of every city, which IMO is much better than having rows and rows of essentialy the same buildings and roads which is how GTA IV and RDR made up space.
