loony979
i think most of you guys are in for a rude shock when the map size is shown ,but even then there will be a debate on it ,so im ot saying anything but that ,but this pic above gta IV SAME SIZE AS GTA SA cmon hell no it was smaller simple. SA was a milestone game that reached beyond limits... i think tho could be wrong GTA V WILL BE massive none the less & cant wait. dan the man already said just how big it is so there you know get of it. GTAknowledge
I think it will have the same amount of city space as GTA4 plus the mountains, forests, countryside and beaches will be the same size as GTA4 So altogether it will be twice the size of GTA4 and about the same size as RDR That would be perfect. Bigger than GTA IV with more detail!

Mister Pink
Of course Houser will say it's big. He wants the game to sell well. I'd love a big map or like they with San Adreas build it so it seems bigger than it is, like windy roads, having the freeway going around the longest side of the map. The blur effect when driving on the road helps and maybe the speed of some of the flying vehicles can be a tad slower than real life so you feel like you're travelling further. Having said that the detail needs to go up too. Hopefully we'll see an improvement for the map size and get more detail. 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿

Don't get me wrong, this idea of being chased on my Sanchez by police in 4x4 trucks across the countryside on a large map is awesome. But, the bigger they make it, the harder it is to make it detailed and feel real. GTA4s Liberty City was of a moderate size, so the level of detail necessary was achieveable. But for GTA5, it's going to be a lot more work, and could be an issue working within the 360's crappy disc size limit. Unless they come up with a clever two-disc system which is possible. Dystopia
Red Dead didn't seem that big to me at all. It seemed somewhat large because the fastest mode of transport was a horse. Im going to estimate it as 2x the size of IV. Or just under.
Mister Pink
Well I'll be open to multiple discs but hopefully Rockstar have found better ways to compress the information. I can't wait to find out what the game is like and then read over the this forum before and compare what we generally expect and what was made a reality. Magic_Al
Can someone confirm how many sq miles RDR was? The entire map is approximately the size of San Andreas but the area within intentional boundaries (water, cliffs) is approximately 6-7 square miles. It's hard to be more precise than that because it's based on using in-game distance travelled stats to walk along straight features on the map and extrapolating map scale from that. It's possible and tempting to believe the fully zoomed-in RDR map image with a resolution of 7500x5500 pixels has a scale of exactly 1 pixel = 1 square meter but that would be a tad bigger than my measurements. San Andreas is still the biggest Rockstar map at 13.9 square miles. You can think of it as: GTA IV is the city area of San Andreas and RDR is the country area of San Andreas. Elric101
My official prediction, this is based on size differences of reused locations, I think GTAV will be between 42-56 Square miles.

So that's like 4 times the size of San Andreas.... Maybe on the next generation console that map size will easily be made.
Death2Drugs
Realistically, the most could be 40 sq miles. Maybe we could get 50 sq miles. There's just one thing that makes no sense: In True Crime LA, that game was on the PS2, yet it had 240 sq miles of LA (though not extremely detailed). I think that R* can push consoles to their limit with a huge map. I can understand that newer consoles need a lot more power than older ones, but this shouldn't be an excuse. el_roy1985
I predict that there will be at least two maps. LS and LC being the two for sure maps. LS will be about twice the size of SA.

John The Grudge
SA wasn't that big. The cities were absolutely tiny. I really hope GTA V has a bigger map than that.

Wait, what? What do you mean when you say there will be two maps? Also, are you saying that you think that LS in GTA:V will be 2 times larger than the entire map of SA? While I'm sure the actual city stretches out a little bit further than the hills that were shown, if you watch the trailer, you can see that the visible portion of Los Santos is almost the same size as IV's Liberty City, maybe a little bit smaller/bigger. If Los Santos really did turn out to be twice as big as San Andreas...that'd be pretty boring. What exactly would you do in a city that big? How would it not be repetitive? scorcher93
You can only go so big before people turn, and start bitching about the map being too big. Plus if Rockstar do this then they risk sales by having too much average landscape and the game being too tiresome to play.

I doubt the entire city of LS will be as big as all of SA. A size like that is simply unnecessary. My guess would be that it's about the same size as IV's LC , probably smaller even. With the rest of the map being dedicated to other cities/towns and desert/forest.

You will be able to fly between the cities. The city of LS will only be slightly larger then LC, it's the outskirts that will be vast. With a lot of mountains, farming, oil, wind turbines and small towns.
SCLASS
A very simple way to infer the size of V is the very fast pace of the jets in the game. Dont forget, that in SA - a mere 4 miles across, the Jets still took a few minutes to cover this . An effective speed of about 120 mph...ridiculously slow , but appropriate considering the small confines of the game. Check out the speed of the fighter jet in the downtown area...this is not a trailer specific speed, ...the Learjet type plane at the end also seems to be travelling at a realistic speed. I suspect we will see a map with an extreme diameter of at least 12 miles plus, if only too make a journey by plane not a 30 second max one. This is not too say we are going to see a 12 by 12 mile map (that would be a stretch with the RAGE engine) instead...perhaps a 3 by 12 one...a little like LA noire. It takes 60s or less to move across the whole of SA in a jet. Not trying say V won't have a large map but you were a bit wrong.
