Moving nature in GTA V?

Well, I remember playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed I and II...and distinctly remembering when playing as the character (Darth Vader for example) I was walking through long grass and it was moving as if it were real.

I know on GTAs the trees have realistic stumps but I know the leaf part of it is just a blurry image. I thought they could implement this into V.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: If you check out after 3minutes on the video, the character is walking through long grass which is also moving WITH the wind

Anything learned making Red Dead Red will be likely seen as an advantage building up future Rockstar games....and GTA

It tripped me the f*ck out the first time I noticed trees and grass moved with the wind in RDR. Since it's obvious that RAGE can do it we'll no doubt see it in V.

...Just look off to your left when you see the mountain scene in the trailer, I think that's your answer already

The trees in GTA are f*cking horrible to look at, especially IV.

Now take a look at RDR's trees. Hell just look at the ones in the trailer. Massive improvements over IV's.

Well the force unleashed used the euphoria engine which is what R* use now so im sure that the grass will be similar

So if RDR has moving nature (I have RDR and passed it), does that mean we MAY also see an upgrade for trees?

@Buffalo Soldier: Couldn't agree more...it's a real let down since IV was a major, major graphics revolution in this generation's gaming.

Maybe when driving your car or bike on the grass some of will be flattened or possibly some ripped out from doing a burnout?

...Are we thinking way above our heads here, haha?

The trailer for V already showed a major upgrade in trees. The palms and pines we see in trailer look 10x than any trees any other GTA had.

Nice one, Slamman icon14.gif

Look at the left when you see the mountain.

You can clearly see the moving plants and such:

Euphoria is an animation engine that gives human/animal characters the ability to control their own movements in reaction to stimuli instead of using only a library of preset poses and ragdoll physics. You've got me wondering if how a plant bends in the wind fits in this category.

Yeah I'm pretty sure environmental stuff falls into RAGE's ballpark not euphoria's.

GTAIVs trees were alright IMO. Especially in high details on PC. Ofc RDR had better ones, cause it's a newer game with the updated graphics engine.

They speak about how the euphoria engine actually works etc. Great video to explain what the engine actually does. They talk about how the environment reacts to the players interacting with it. They just show wood here but I am sure the concept works the same way with grass and so on.

More than this - look at the red tape fluttering in the background of the trailer when the red car pulls up at the junction and the woman crosses the road.

That's SO realistic, it's almost silly. A stupid little detail like that will of course be universal. GOING TO BE AMAZING.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

"Rockstar has integrated a few third party middleware components into RAGE like the proprietary Euphoria[2] character animation engine and the open source Bullet[3] physics engine."

It is actually used in RAGE as a middleware component so my guess is it assists in someway.

Thanks I didn't know that. I thought Euphoria just handled character and ped related actions.

Not a problem. Check out the video I posted very interesting stuff.

The wood, metal, glass etc in The Force Unleashed is calculated by the DMM (Digital Molecular Matter) engine, Euphoria only calculates people and animals.

Grass is not physically calculated but instead the model is skewed and rotated to give the impression of it blowing and bending in the wind and away from objects.

EDIT: that doesn't include the large plants which actually bend, they are also DMM.

You are correct sir! Thanks for clearing that up. So a question since you seem to know about this, can you elaborate more on the way the grass moves? What exactly is controlling it? Sorry if I sound ignorant because I have interest in this but am not that familiar with it all.

P.s. and off-topic: StickyWickett? Are you a cricket fan?

Lol I am not sure. They said it has to do with the environment so I assumed that included things like grass and trees. But once again assumption has screwed me lol

The theme of the first half of the GTA V trailer is wind. Just pay attention to it.

We have sand/dust grains flying in the wind at the first scene, trees shaking, loose plastic shaking in the wind and so on. I think we will be seeing a sh*tload of wind effects

Well, R* must have pushed the hardware limitations of the consoles to their very end

by seeing these new effects and behaviors.

As far as I know, there is not an specific engine regarding to the wind effects on GTA V. It's all part of R* Rage. Actually many engines today have these kind of "leafs on the wind" effects. Probably Uncharted Engine has the best one.

I'm not 100% sure but I imagine that the grass is controlled by a randomly generated integer between two extents (for example anything between -5 and 5) for the X and Z axis skew amount every couple of seconds for wind, and then some sort of algorithm for moving it when an object is in close proximity. As I said I don't know for certain, as I've never used RAGE, but that's how I would go about animating grass in 3DS Max.

P.s. and off-topic:  StickyWickett?  Are you a cricket fan?

Haha, nope, my surname is Wickett so I was often called Sticky or Middle by people who I assume were cricket fans.

I ve seen the trees in the mountain scene but havent noticed the red "worksite" tapes moving...nice find, and WHAT A GAME this would be........

Another game to look at when we talk about vegetation is L.A Noire. For those who played it, you noticed that when you are stepping through bushes, they move accordingly. This also goes for the trees.

I am absolutely sure that this kind of moving vegetation will be in GTA V. It was in RDR also...
