GTAV tech limitations in effect ?

GTA4 was the first GTA (at least on the console) that had to resort to the 'blur' effect at high speed. This is most noticeable on the bridges in LS, particularly entering Algonquin.

The reason for this blur is to cover up the huge amount of data that need to be streamed whilst maintaining a decent framerate. This is troublesome in that handling is affected , and is generally quite disorientating.

I wonder if GTAV will improve upon this ?

Another huge , huge issue for me is the inconsistent top speed shown by vehicles according to where they are on the map . On said bridges you will definately notice a slower top speed than say , a narrow china town street. Again, the amount of data needed to be streamed is the cause of this. A top speed (worked out by time /distance) shows a top speed in GTA4 of under 100 MPH FFS ! - sort it out R* ...the PC is the same although the issue can be solved with mods.

I don't think R* do this on purpose. It is mostly about giving the player a good experience based on the hardware they have to work with. You should be blaming Sony or Microsoft and not R*. For what R* give us I think it looks just fine.

The blur creates a sense of speed. Objects are blurred when they move quickly, this happens in real life and should happen in a game.

If it also helps cover up technical problems, then more power to them, it just wouldn't look good without the blur.

i like the blur, even if it is masking problems.

i would rather feel like im going over 100mph, than feel im actually going 70mph.

blur is also good to simulate the adrenalin rush and eyes watering.

im sure that the resources needed to fix this on consoles would require a massive compromise elsewhere. this is probably why we already have the compromise of only 4 or 5 car types at any one time.

one way to solve this would be to have heavy traffic everywhere causing you to slow down and weave through it or just drive like dara o'brien seems to. which wouldn't be much fun.

I believe as some stated, it's not a hardware deficiency, it's the effect of speed, however, Speed is a serious animation toll on any system, PC included. The DRAW IN factor of buildings and texture was hampered in IV just running on foot, in the simpler GTAs not really as much, the engine was new, no matter HOW you look at it, it was a ground up build for GTA IV, bottom line. There are going to be flaws in such things.

I'm not totally up to speed with all the techie talk but although a tech limitation might have been a cause for this, I think Rockstar used it to their advantage. If you are travelling at speed in reality your eyes aren't able to take in all of the details and as Rockstar tried to create a more realistic tone, I believe this was an excellent representation of realism in gaming.

Buffalo Soldier

er, San Andreas had the blur effect - and it was awesome, really made me feel epic when going fast.

I just love the blur effect it feels like the time is slowed

The old SA PS2, Highway chases around Las Venturas! I agree with that, the cars were in Hyperspeed mode and then would collide! I had great fun with disrupting traffic. Of course, stealing from Area 51 and heading out to that highway! (cue Judas Priest!!)

With improvements in technology, perhaps we will eventually experience ACTUAL speed: no blur required, with your eyes shifting ever further down the road looking for traffic to slow down for/weave around/smash into. AI will react like real life (ie. not always predictably), with Massive Speeds maintainable over the huge distances the maps will then cover.

We're talking many years in the future though...

It always seems like you're going slower at high speeds on the motorway, than the same speed does on city streets.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the HEAT associated near hot asphalt, that effect is also included graphically. They've made RDR look like a real effected natural world and I hope some of that rubs off on GTA as well

I liked IV's motion blur effect. It didn't really graphically over anything up, it actually decreases the FPS on my pc but with the effect the fps still seemed consistent.

Only until sometime in the future when our eyes will be capable of controlling games' cameras, perfect motion blur/depth of field can be accomplished. Since that is not possible we have to settle for the next best thing.
