The Most Awesome Game Soundtracks

In recent years the Game Masters are not only fuelling the sense of intensity, stunning visuals and excitement to improve gameplay and performance but, in my opinion, it has to be the music in video games today that manages to pull off even relatively poor game sales to faster rate enabling them to make or break a game in profits.

Of course, a rousing soundtrack can’t be applied to all genres of games but competitive games in FPS or RPG genres need often popular, well-known tracks mixed with some lesser known bands to create a variety of playlists to ramp up the initial release adrenaline and maintain that affect successfully as time goes on. In fact, the quality is at par with recent movie soundtracks

What is your favourite game music or soundtrack and why? Tell us and share in the comments smile.gif

- Crysis Warhead and Hitman Contracts are my personal favorites till date!

Elder Scrolls Oblivion & Skyrim definitely have a beautiful and powerful soundtrack that helped enhance the game experience

leik oh em jeez!

This topic is nothing without some actual music.

In no particular order:

The Legend of Zelda - NES

Louts II: R.E.C.S. - SEGA Genesis

Sonic 2 - SEGA Genesis

It is my firm belief that music is a good portion of any game/movie/show. Having something pleasing to the ears is always a plus.

In my opinion a SOUNDTRACK isn't a song by someone else, posted onto a game.

If we're going for the real good ones we need Jade Cocoon for PSX:

And who can forget Knights and Merchants epic soundtrack and gameplay:

Especially the first song here, it can make me go into a trance of awesomeness.

But with the music, which I could hear when I play or even when ending credits roll almost always a good source of well known music or a band and even yester years underrated artists all provide a memorable gameplay effect with either soundtracks or lyrics blend in music.

Music is a half-tempted piece of art in games that might be favorite for many emotionally attached with the game AND there are so many others that think popular music is much better than the versions that the Game Developers brought into the game.

Basically it doesnt matter as far as it blends in perfectly with the concept of the game smile.gif

They've already been mentioned but the best soundtracks I've ever heard are the Crysis and TES soundtracks. Simply brilliant.

To me, all the oldest games had the best soundtracks. I'm not saying that because I'm a secret gaming oldie at heart, scared off by all this XBox Live and online malarkey, but I genuinely believe both music and gameplay were at their prime before the 2000s. Even now, I smile inside thinking of the sound the original Playstation made when the logo flashed on screen. It was hollow, but at the same time, so warm and welcoming, and offered people of all ages a haven and new gaming experience. It seems strong, but I have fond memories of playing games such as Tombi, Kula World, Wipeout and Tekken (all with fantastic soundtracks too, by the way) and being completely immersed in this colourful, often bizarre world.

The one that takes the cake for me though? This beauty...

I couldn't begin to tell you why if you asked me, but at the time I'd never heard or played anything like it. Runners up include the Jet Set Radio series, Resident Evil, and Spyro The Dragon.

Not in any order:

Spyro 1- Very memorable.

Spyro 2- Very memorable.

Spyro 3- Very memorable.

Fallout New Vegas- Love the old world type music.

grand theft auto sanandreas- Love all the gangster rap.

the urbz (ps2,xbox and gc version) - love it.

The sims 1 PS2.- Love it.

Mario 3- Never can forget any of it.

GTA 3- Never can forget the theme, or head radio.

Oh sh*t, apologies for that report I just sent. I thought this was a new topic, not seeing it was a new page.

Anyway, to beat my old horse about, I'd say that the most memorable soundtrack for me would have to include the Zelda:OOT one. Can't really pick a favourite one from the bunch.

Nobody mentions Mafia 1 and Mafia 2 ? In my opinion they had a really excellent soundtrack, both an orchestral one (played by the Prague Symphonic Orchestra) and licensed tracks from that time period. They really should be ranking high on any list about game music.

Also, let's not forget:

GTA: Vice City, San Andreas, Vice City Stories and IV+EFLC

The Hitman series (played by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, music composed by Jesper Kyd)

No One Lives Forever series (quite fitting soundtrack evoking the 60s)

Deus Ex (the first one; haven't played Human Revolution yet, but I will get it soon)

Bioshock 1 and 2

I had the special edition of Killer Instinct on SNES with the black cartridge, and it came with a CD of the game soundtrack which, I must say, kicked a ton of ass.

And let's not forget Mortal Kombat. But I guess that was more the movies than the games.

@Craig: Parappa? Hellz yer! biggrin.gif

The OST of Silent Hill 3 actually came with the game and was featured in the live action movie. It was integrated into the actual game in a really powerful way. It was very reminiscent of an early Cure album, very industrial and gloomy like the game. Listened to it quite a bit.

Makes me think of some old James Bond theme song mixed with a bit of David Bowie. ^

*Also the main theme song for Skyrim is catchy as hell.

My all time favourite video game soundtrack would be the one from Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. It was so entrancing and gave the game a really good atmosphere. I remember liking it so much years ago that I actually burnt it to a CD.

f*ck, that game was good. Such fond memories.

I thought Resident Evil 4 had a good soundtrack, too:

And Rainbow Six Vegas:
