visionist
Neil McCauley (De Niro) in the movie Heat was methodical, professional, in control and top of his game as a career criminal and leader of a competent crew. I hope that GTA V has a protag who is similarly in control. We have had pre-damaged protagonists in all the recent Rockstar games (GTA IV, RDR, LA Noire). That's just a movie mechanism to create drama. I want to feel good about playing the game and playing the protagonist as a competent, classy winner, not as a character that starts out with a crummy life and ends up worse at the end. That is one way in which I want video games to be different than movies. One tragic lesson of Heat is that "you just can't get good help these days." Things fell apart when they brought in that whackjob Waingro for the armored car heist. He brought down the whole gang. So, except for Val Kilmer's character, everybody in the crew lost it all, which was a shame. BTW, from wikipedia, about the film Heat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_(1995_film) "The film is technically a remake of L.A. Takedown, a 1989 made-for-television film which was also written and directed by Mann; the director had been trying to get Heat made for over a decade, and created L.A Takedown as a simplified version after his efforts were unsuccessful." "Allow nothing into your life that you cannot walk out in in 10 seconds flat if you feel the heat coming round the corner" The best film ever made. Seldom imitated, never equalled. The best action. The best music. The best pacing. The best acting. The best cinematography. The best script. The best twist. Perfection. Edit: If you want some fun, check out Mann's original version of Heat: LA Takedown. It's horrendously cheesy and proves that Pacino & Deniro can turn a bad scene into cinematic gold. Edit- Main character 'actors' name in movie 'Heat', "Robert De Niro". Main possible protagonist for 'GTA V', "Albert De Sivila'... mmmfloorpie
Hello fellow fans. I have mentioned this idea on and off for about two weeks now and I thought I would lay my case out thoroughly. I think that V is loosley based off the movie "Heat". Other GTA games were based off of movies to a certain extent. VC was "Scarface", SA was "Boyz in the Hood" and "Menace to Society", IV was "The Proffesional"(probably). Based off of the V trailer this is what I have noticed. The likely protagonist is a 40 something white male who says he has moved to LS(Los Angeles) to retire from the criminal life he has led. In "Heat", Robert DeNiro(Neil McCauley) is trying to retire from being a criminal and move out of L.A.(where the movie is set) to start a new life with his new girlfriend but the life won't let him(his fault). Some of the scenes in the trailer are very similar to scenes right out of "Heat". The port scene is there and the freeway underpasses(where the hobos live in tents in V) are in two scenes. The big freeway underpass scene is when they rob an armored car. Neil works with a four man crew when the missions go down and in this scene they use a small ambulance which is the model of van in the jewelry store heist in V. They are wearing hockey masks while in V they wear masks that suit their costumes(and they are a four man crew as well). The mission in IV called "Three Leaf Clover" is similar to the bank robbery scene in "Heat" and could be foreshadowing the inspiration for the story, at least in part, of V. Tom Sizemores character wields an AK-47 style assault rifle in that scene(like in V). The bank robbery spills out into the streets of downtown L.A. which looks very similar to the scene in the trailer of V where the guys are leaning against the wall(which says Los Santos in big letters). If you watch the movie, which has alot of A list actors including Val Kilmer and Al Pacino, it is like a GTA game turned into a movie, even though it was released in 1995. Does this seem reasonable and can anybody think of a movie better suited to be the inspiration of V's story? AuSsIeThUnDeR36
Slightly off topic - Well I might be on my own here, but I think that old guy in the trailer is someone that you do missions for in the game. He looks like an ex mafia mobster who now is head of his own empire. In the trailer it looks as though he is talking with someone, look at the way he turns and looks. Maybe he has the main character talking to him. IDK about everyone else, but a 40-45 year old dude going to work out at Muscle Sands would be weird to me and running along fast for long periods of time, I would be thinking Gee this guy should be having coughing fits and throwing up by now. It makes better sense to me that the main character would be in their mid twenties or 25-30 years old
SmoothGetaway
It makes better sense to me that the main character would be in their mid twenties or 25-30 years old No it doesn't, guys in their 40's/50's would MOP THE FLOOR with a punk 20 something. If you actually ever went to a gym you'd see lots of guys and girls in their middle years working out and IN GREAT SHAPE. OT: I literally had to pause the game in Three Leaf after the cutscene ends with all the cops and sirens. That was pretty much ripped from Heat and I just had to roll up a cone for the long firefight I now knew was coming. If V has Heat influences I'll be STOKED. Official General
Has anyone seen an American TV show called " The Shield ". For those who don't know, it is a show about an elite team of special investigation cops in the Los Angeles Police Force that happen to be very, very corrupt, scheming and sometimes ruthless and violent when they have to be. They get into all kinds of escapades and dealings with all kinds of criminals and gangsters, while trying to evade the watchful eye of their boss, a police chief who wants to expose corruption in the force to aid his political ambitions of being elected in public office. They have dealings and confrontations with Black street gangs, Hispanic street gangs, Armenian and Russian gangsters, Triads, Asian street gangs, Mexican drug cartels, biker gangs, Nazi skinhead gangs, its hectic and crazy. It also touches on many areas of crime like, drug-dealing, prostitution, brothels, extortion, murder, everything to do with GTA can be found in this programme. It also very realistic and brutal, I'd love to GTA V use many elements of this TV show. Some stuff from Training Day would be great as inspiration too. TinTinn
The Shield (2002) The story of an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct where some of the cops aren't above breaking the rules or working against their associates to both keep the streets safe and their self-interests intact. Rucke
Looking back at past GTAs it's pretty obvious that R* is a big fan of Heat and has used some characters and events as inspiration for the games. It seems like they have drawn a lot of inspiration from the movie this time around as well. For instance, the different main characters who all have their own story and motives and are all joined together to perform bank robberies. They all seem to have their own personal problems which makes them (at least in Michael's case) return to the life he was trying to retire from. ChillyPhilly
No GTA title is 'based' off of a movie. Rather, as someone has said, they are inspired by many. Nowadays, as was the case with IV, the plot is more original, but the themes, cinematography and characters are still strongly influenced by Rockstar's favourite films. That said, there will definitely be connections between Heat and V. When I first saw the trailer for V and saw Michael (formerly the 'Balcony Guy'), I thought of one film and one character: Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Heat. My guess about the storyline pre-GI was that it revolved around a robbery crew after one last score for retirement - like Heat. It's no surprise to hear post-GI that V will be focused on a crew, and surprise surprise, heists as well. - There's a couple of other connections, slightly unrelated: Tom Sizemore, who played the role of Michael Cheritto, provided the voice for Sonny Forelli in Vice City. GTA V's San Andreas will feature a 'Salton Sea' region. 'Salton Sea' is also a 2002 movie starring Val Kilmer, who was one of the crew in Heat alongside Neil McCauley and Michael Cheritto. kidkash1a
I would say the main theme of GTA is heat, i mean in one of the GI Images where michael is wearing a mask with a suit and looking at his watch is clearly symbolic to De-niros character in that iconic heist scene. theres other films that inspired this game that i can think of... Point break-advanced wanted system which involves tense on foot chases and leaping through peoples backyards (watch the chase scene on youtube) Fast Six-The screenshot whetr Franklyn is seen on the side of a truck full of cars reminded me of fast six. i can see there being a mission where you have to steal a certain amount of cars within a certain time limit. The Town-i can see that awesome nun costume being in this game. i was just being brief here because im mobile, but this game will be what we expect from a GTA game, but 10 times more awesomeness

Rjeev142
I'm just glad people aren't comparing GTA V with Breaking Bad anymore. But this thread has got me thinking....what if the antagonist of GTA V is a cop that tries to take down the trio, much like the cop Pacino plays in Heat?
