lil weasel
It used to have entertainment, now however: PBS Infomercials: What’s going on at PBS? We know that the public in the U.S. can’t afford to pay through taxes to support it and the other pork the Congress needs to keep itself in office... But all this Fund Raising? They say they only do it three times a year, yah… January to mid April, then May to mid August, and finally September to mid December (or so it seems). We used to get some interesting programing, mostly from the UK. My favorite was the Doctor Who. Now its Infomercials one after the other or children’s babysitter programing. The last time I donated to my PBS they were cheating. The Doctor was moved from its popular 5:30 pm slot to after midnight. Barney was put in the Doctor’s slot during pledge week. Hey, guess what? Doctor Who was cancelled “because not enough viewers pledged support”. What a crock of … I noticed that when the PBS can’t program good stuff they have a “Viewer’s Choice” so they can stick whatever crap they have left over in the vault to fill on air time. As an aside, what’s with those Irish women singers? Do they spend so much time in chains that their arms are now naturally pinned to their sides? When I first saw them it reminded me of our southern chain gang prisoners after five years or so. It looks so unnatural. The PBS used to tout that there are no commercials. Then they said there is commercial interruptions. Now those little ‘brought to you by’ statements have changed from a simple mention to actual commercials blurbs. If PBS stations need the money they should stop the ‘non-profit’ nonsense and go commercial just like Blue Cross/Blue Shield did… go for big payoff. They claim to ‘serve the community’ but with the what, from who? I had a medical doctor (dermatologist) who closed his practice and disappeared, I found him doing an infomercial on PBS. It seems he ‘invented’ a skin cream product. At least on Commercial Channels and Cable they announce that the Infomercials are “Paid Advertising”. But on PBS they treated as public service Entertainment programs… dubious medical and self-help theories being fostered as proven science … Will we ever get our Public Access TV back? ** crawls into corner and cries**
HolyGrenadeFrenzy
Corporate Martial Law has no time for your complaints on the matter. Seriously, there are only three paths to the same eventual end plan. You have any one of them to pick from, yet you may have to still endure the other two. Fascism, Science Dictatorship and Feudalism and all held up with a Technoracy Front for each. Now, what does this have to do with commercials on PBS? Shut up and do one of the choices that the super vision box/sage/technovision-babysitter tells you! Good day. ---------- Did you really believe that PBS would be able to hold out forever? Welcome to the world of disappointment.
lil weasel
What the .... ?? I never expected Public Broadcasting to work in a Capitalist envirionment. It's a wonder that they managed to keep it looking like it was for so long. Only a Dictatorship like the UK (Television License) could really come close, and it's cracked too, what with its commercial channels. Too bad the Good Olde Days, weren't or we could have something to go back to.

trip
Those "brought to you by" notices really pissed me off, but thankfully, I have yet to catch an infomercial. I swear I have seen full fledged car commercials. Except they change them a little bit so they don't seem so 'commercial'. The problem is the saturation of TV. (You know)Not too many years ago we only had 3 VHF and maybe 4 UHF channels to entertain us. PBS was the 4th VHF channel in a way, and it was that channel you went to for a bit of 'culture'. Or at least you went there for something different and not stupid. Now we have over 1000 channels of a mix of stupid and cultured. There is a dieing generation of PBS hang ons now. The people that have developed an emotional attachment though time. Eventually that generation will be gone taking PBS with them. We will have to catch Dr. Who, Flying Circus, Are You Being Served, and all of those on cable/satellite now. I freaking hate the fund drives. They suck you in with their good stuff - then wham - here comes the begging. I used to donate, but sorry to say I haven't in many years. lil weasel
The Fund Raising is about half Informercials going under the colours of Health & Self Improvement and nostalgia record offers (albit Time-Life). The "brought to you by" notices used to be a simple screen card "Mobil" now as you say they are 'docked' commercials. The 'childrens' programing (babysitters) are now even in foreign languages (a learning experience). Seems it's going the way of 'Easy Listening" radio turning into "cRAP". The Youth movement will ruin everything
