BaldadigeAnton
Just to be clear, people don't buy a new car every year. So there will be cars driving around which are bought in the timeframe 1998 (or earlier) - 2012 right?
acmilano
Sorry for the bump, but does anybody know what color are stickers on licence plates in California for 2012?That could explain a lot.

cp1dell
Imagine if it took place before, or even parallel to GTA IV to avoid having to make connections and references to the events that surround Niko, and the choices he makes? I'm not saying it will, I was just thinking about this.
Los Santos Pedestrian
I didn't know that license plates dictate which year we live in. Every licensed car in a specified state has to change the color of the sticker every year. All of them do. If you don't change the sticker in time, you get fined. Death2Drugs
Sure, it's more red-orangish, but it's still somewhat Orange. Heck, I remember seeing some California license plates with an orange sticker reading 2011! That means: The State of California, at least for a short time, re-instated the orange sticker for 2011. Anyway, it's likely to get removed from the final version, either changed to turquoise to match the current license plates of 2012 or the sticker gets removed all together. 08LasVenturas
As was said earlier by someone, if you look at the link to the graph of license plate sticker colors, there's a color pattern. 2013 is set to have the orange stickers. Now the game might still be released in 2012, since 2013 will still be current at the time.

Australia
The license plate color was also orange in 1992, when San Andreas was set

That relieves me! Not only that, if the game takes place around May 2013 (I'm actually hoping it gets released in May 2013, since it's a summer and the game will be in its best form, not to mention a very large marketing campaign!), that building in construction could be the Wilshire Grand Tower I. The Wilshire Grand Tower does not start getting built until mid-2012, so it'd be perfect!
Slamman
I say set in the ultra-moderne 2012 setting, They should plan to have the game in the not too distant future, since it releases that far into the future, as it turns out!

darkplague
maybe its all filler..... maybe when they started work on V they just converted all the cars over, put in the licence plates, at the time that was current back then when they started, with plans to change them later on... idk, just a thought every NUMBERED gta (with the exception of 2) is set in the year that it is released.... maybe they feel this is too predictable and decide to change it? but... i hope not... I think GTA 2 is also set in the present (1999) due to a comment on the radio that "the Millennium's coming". That makes no sense in 2013 but would have been true in 1999. It's also consistent with the GTA2 website being programmed to show the date 3 weeks from the present. The evidence for 2013 is only the dated journals and police files on the website but I think that has to defer to the radio content in the game. If you read the individual police files, where there are conviction dates none of them are later than 1998 and all of the younger characters have birthdates in the late 1960s and early 1970s and criminal records that start in the 1980s. If they wanted to definitely show the game was written to be 15 years later then they could have listed some adult characters being born in the 1980s or 1990s, but they didn't. I think the evidence is contradictory but there is more for 1999 than 2013.

And for a GTA V we will see when will be released,2012 or 2013.
senor_huevos_benedicto
I imagine that it'll be set in the year of release, i.e. 2012 or 2013. The license plate thing is interesting, however I think that it's just a coincidence. If the game is set in 2008, there would be the same model cars from GTA 4. However, as seen here, http://gta.wikia.com/Vehicles_in_GTA_V, many vehicles have been updated.

I'm expecting a lot of cars from GTA IV to come back, especially since most of the cars in GTA IV (especially cheap models) can be found in present day Los Angeles and in general America. The Wilshire Grand Tower does not start getting built until mid-2012, so it'd be perfect! The Wilshire Grand Tower I doesn't have a wing, The Mile High Club does, much like the Marriott wing of the LA Live Hotel. And the official announcement says "present day". Move along, people. This. And that statement is from last year. So... I hope Rockstar doesn't fit all this into a 2012/2013/whatever year setting. I guess that just comes with trying to make something set in "present" time yet spending years to develop it though, the result can't really be true to the times.
