llpalm08
Nice find, I don't know about the 2008 thing though because R*N is based in Scotland so im not sure they are fully familiar with how American numberplates work and are just going on what they saw when the scouted LA probably back in 08. I think this is the reason why they use the orange stickers on the cars. It was based on the time (2008) where they scouted LA for GTA V. Because the devs/scouts in R*N don't know those stickers changes colour every year, so they just remain to use the orange colour. But I think when V is about to be released, they could rectify that mistake. Its probably the sort of thing R* sort out during the publishing/final touches stage that they go through once R*N hand it over entierly to R*. I hope this is the case but as somebody also pointed out the construction of The Mile High Club appears to be at the exact stage it's real life counterpart was at in 2008 so right now we have two things pointing towards that year and only Rockstar's statement containing the words "present day" to suggest otherwise. Chances are it's just a couple of coincidences but who knows.

It still does not mean the game will be set in 2008 when R* clearly said it will be present day (2011-2012, depends when the game will be released). Hobo-Lord
I wouldnt be surprised if "Modern Day" would be 2008. Thats when the recession hit people the hardest. Since the game is centered around money, and how there were many homeless people in the trailer, i wouldnt be surprised.

GTAknowledge
I still think it will be 2012. They said present day and also being in 2008 makes it too close to GTA IV.
boxmonster
Even though some of you are arguing that things are just like that because the game probably started development around 2008, the story probably could've also been in development then. So 2008-style events could affect the story nevertheless.
RobbiSig
And the official announcement says "present day". Move along, people. present day can mean few years back like for example 2008
J-B
As I said in the analysis thread the game probably takes place in 2011-12 but they started modeling the map back when that tower was still under construction and decided to leave it that way because it adds more flavor to the skyline. They could've also kept it to use it as a unique building. Like those under construction buildings in VC and VCS. And if Rockstar wanted to theme the undertone of the game with the bad economy. It's not really all that better now than it was back in 2008. The license plate sticker is probably just people over analyzing things.
ewankirky
What if the game starts in 2008, just after the end of LC, but this time as the days role by - so do the years. Bringing us up to 'present day' 2012 by the end of the story line. Mile high building complete, new cars released in 09', 10' & 11' - other major events programmed in? skillz7855
I think its set 2012 the orange plates might be changed to green and the mile high club might be complete once the final version is done

patmck91
just because the license plates say 2008, you can have older cars in a game not every car has to say 2008 on it as it may not have been sold in 2008 so the sticker means game is set either in 2008 or later thats all that tells

Cheat
Nice detective work, man, but I got a feeling that it's going to be set in '11-'13. The construction of the hotel is a nice detail, but I believe that the license plate thing is just Rockstar being sloppy or something like that, nice work anyways buddy. I'm not saying it couldn't be '08 but I strongly doubt it.

Slamman
And the official announcement says "present day". Move along, people. More confirmed with those snapshots is that it's Los Santos in San Andreas state, but that doesn't mean the first game out for GTA 5 will be the whole of San Andreas, it's still entirely within reason that a DLC or multi disc release will allow all of the old game to be recreated. Then, I assume...a move to Vice City! hahaha
J-B
You know the stickers have to be updated yearly... The stickers is the trailer are orange , but no date is on them. Chances are the reference picture the artist at Rockstar used was one from 2008 or another orange sticker year and not a result of the game itself taking place in 2008. Slamman
No smog testing in our State, but for license renewal, YES, you must buy a two digit decal to re-apply and update both plates. The plates in GTA don't have to comply with any REAL WORLD laws, so forget that realistic slant, there's really no need for that, only better graphics to emulate the real world, not having ties to time and geography, that's overkill

Perhaps but I don't think the resolution on the license plate textures are as high as they appear to be; they could of got rid of the year due to legibility issues. carcols.dat
i have just seen a 2005 car driving round my street, it must be 2005 and there was me thinking it was 2011 Precisely. This is just more speculation. And am I the only one that notices that the orange box is blank? That to me means that R* has no intention of specifying a specific year like 2011 or 2008, instead opting for a generic "late 2000s/early 2010s" route which would fit with their present-day announcement. In GTA IV there weren't any mentions of specific years any either, might be the same here.

boxmonster
Look at the cars first they are too new for 2008. Which ones? Every car seems to fit into 2008 from the 4 door Jeep Wranglers to that Audi R8. Edit: Found out the R8 convertible came out in 2009. But in GTA SA there were some cars off by a couple years. mdniterder
It will be set in 2012 because it will be in present time, just like GTA IV was in 2008 because it was relased in 2008. San Andreas was set in 2004, and released in 2004, Vice City was set in 2002 and released in 2002, oh wait..... Someone has pointed out something that may very well be true and your shutting them down on a flawed notion. Present day doesn't mean anything other than modern times. Games take longer to complete than a day, thus even if they decide on a date when production begins it wouldn't be present day (to your standards). He may be wrong, he may be right, but he has more evidence on his side at the moment then thee opposing side. Wait, wait, Vice city was set in 2002 and not the 1980's? You mean everyone was locked in the past but in the future?

So, we are basing the year off of a license plate that is in a video game? LMFAO; it's R* and it's a video game. Not EVERYTHING has to be realistic; how do you even know that R* was given permission to use only last year's model of license plate? How do you know it won't change to present day? How do you know R* knows it's a video game and can do whatever they damn well please? Present Day; nuff said.
mdniterder
EDIT: On a side note.. the plate on the Blue Car and the Police Car says October.. possible release month perhaps?? All cars in California have a Month and a Year on the plate for when you must re-new your tags. Smog your vehicle ever 2 years. Also the month usually coincides with the first digit of your plate. It depicts if your car is an odd or even month.
