Rhoda
Hello. Apparently, 'tis the season. This is why from today right to the 25th I'll be running this advent calendar, which has an interesting link, picture, video or other internet oddity behind every door. These are links and pages that I've seen over the year that I thought were funny, interesting or just plain entertaining. I hope you get some sort of enjoyment out of it. I must say I'm a little bit delicate after last night, but I'm trying my best with it so we'll just see what happens. Big thanks to Narcis, who made these funky little boxes for me. Each box will show the day as it comes, and clicking on them will take you to the appropriate post. The rest of them will be in a post below this one due to the image limit, but it breaks things down pretty nicely. For an added touch, use the Christmas skin when viewing, or alternatively, drink lots of mulled wine and drive your car through somebody's living room. Merry Christmas, y'all. Rhoda
Day number 1. "Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured." For some, the thought of starting Christmas shopping is daunting. You plod through November turning a blind eye, and then all of a sudden, December hits you in the face. Your mind gets to thinking of what to get, for who, where from, how much and give it to me. For what it's worth, Christmas is a very heavily commercial affair nowadays. However, there are ways of bringing the traditional aspects back and a neat way to save money. Consider making gifts this year with the Green Holiday Gift Guide. The one shown is a small garden in a lightbulb. Ensure the gift you give is a unique one, and make it one to remember. It might just guarantee you more leftovers. Robinski
I foresee this going like my actual advent calendars used ( ) to. I'll have vehement determination to open it everyday for the first few times, then eventually the enthusiasm will die out. That is, until I remember on christmas eve and binge on delicious, delicious chocolate interesting content. I look forward to this. Anyway, I'm not sure whether the content is the Twain quote or the gift ideas, so I'll cover both. I'm not such a fan of the Twain quote, it gives the message that you should spill your anger or annoyance or whatever "acid" is in you because it will always bet better to do so. It doesn't cover the fact that you should wait for an appropriate time, place and company. On the green gifts, I really like that lightbulb idea. It looks like a little miniature thing you'd see in one of the less-frequented wings of the Tate. It's pretty cool. That said, my gift giving process will fall in line with the traditional male MO: buy lots of things on the 23rd (because you decided to get an early start this year) and christmas eve while complaining about the crowds of other like-minded men. I hope we don't all get Rick Roll'd on Christmas Day. But then again that would be fun. Great idea Craig I look forward to the pictures/videos/what not in the coming days to Christmas. Have an early Christmas , now all you need is the milk.
Rhoda
Christmas to a child is the first terrible proof that to travel hopefully is better than to arrive. Garfield is one of the most iconic comic characters around, and it's often hard to believe that he's only been around since the 70s. Creator Jim Davis is still hard at it, producing a new strip daily. It remains both timeless and contemporary at the same time. As with every character, Garfield has undergone some serious stylistic changes, along with his "master" Jon Arbuckle and faithful punching bag Odie. However, what happens when you take Garfield out of the question entirely? Probably the most bizarre cartoon experiment going. Garfield Minus Garfield is a curious little strip, in that it takes existing strips and removes Garfield completely, leaving just Jon on his own, interacting with thin air. The result? Well, the website says: Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb. It sounds a bit morbid for an advent calendar I agree, but some are genuinely hilarious and you often think to yourself just what the hell Garfield was even doing in the first place. You really gain an insight into their relationship. There's even a book you can buy, so if you're looking for a slightly strange Christmas gift, you can't go far wrong with it, especially for existing Garfield fans. As an added bonus, here is the Garfield Vault, which houses every comic strip since creation, lovingly restored in full colour so each strip looks as fresh as the day it was printed. Finally, here's one of my favourite Garfield Christmas strips.
SIKKS66
Haha this is going to be fun. If I didn't have work in a few hours I could quite easily sit and read Garfield comics all day.
