For overrated, I'm tempted to go with Call of Duty. but I'd just be jumping on the bandwagon. I don't like 'em but I wouldn't say they're overr... ok they are overrated but I wouldn't say they are the MOST overrated. For what it's worth at least Cal of Duty is getting some heat from the bandwagon, I know one series that isn't even though it doesn't even live up to a standard:

My choice is Gran Turismo on this one. Particularly GT5 and GT6. Aside from the fact that their creators boast about how realistic they are even though in reality they aren't any more realistic Need For Speed Underground, they're also unfinished. Most of the cars in these games don't even have rendered interiors FFS! And they're just flatout boring. They throw 1000 or so cars at you but they don't feature any customization, they don't take any damage (maybe some in GT5 after the patch, barely) and they're tedious as hell to drive, feeling a lot slower than shown on the speedometer (hence the comparison with Underground).

As for underrated, definitely the Flatout series, and by that I mean Flatout, Flatout 2 and Flatout Ultimate Carnage. Not Flatout 3, that one deserved every bit of shaming it got, though much of that unfortunately got directed at the wrong developer.

I also feel Shadow of Mordor is way overrated. A boring story and the nemesis system is far from being something great.

I'll throw The Last of Us in the same category. Cutscene, avoid zombies, cutscene, avoid zombies, cutscene, avoid guards. This game is praised as a story telling and gameplay masterpiece but it follows the same pattern as Call of Duty campaign. Just replace the waves of soldiers to deal with by zombies.

Red Dead Redemption. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game, but way overrated.

After you've beaten the storyline, there really isn't that much to do. The desert and wilderness just don't offer enough to do. Sure you can shoot animals and passerby's, but it gets old pretty quick. The only fun places seem to be in Blackwater and Armadillo. Destructible wagons would have been nice at least, like in the mission where you plant dynamite in the ground. Like I said though, it's a fun game. I need to give it a replay soon.

I think Alan Wake is underrated. That game is one of my favorite games now. I loved the story, gameplay, the suspense, the combat, the thrill to it, and the originality to it.

Overrated:

The Forza Motorsport games. I have completed Forza 3 100%. Obtained every single achievement and spent hundreds of hours in the game. It's probably the best car simulator out there. But as a game, it is boring. And Forza 4, 5, and 6 were literally the same game. I played every single one and I truly cannot tell the difference, minus the fact that they actually TOOK AWAY FEATURES from the previous games. Where the hell is the auction house? Seriously, the amount of time I spent on that thing in Forza 3 was INSANE. Just buying and selling cars for a slightly higher price and making money was a game in itself for me.

But whatever. Yeah, great simulator, boring as hell gameplay.

Gears of War. I play every single one to experience the story. I don't play it much after that. The gameplay is forgettable. Movement and cover mechanics are stiff and I've played many games that have done far better.

Not a bad or boring game, just not very special or innovative.

Underrated:

The Saboteur. Think Mercenaries + Assassins Creed. That is Saboteur. Great game that no one played. Open world action game set in France during WW2. You're in the resistance and are taking the city back from the Nazis. There is stealth, great combat, perks, notoriety system. It does something interesting in that the game is black and white in sections of the city under Nazi control and color returns when you take that part of the city back. Cool game, interesting but slightly forgettable story(still fun to experience), tons of things to do in the open world.

Too Human. Game sold like 10 copies. And the few reviews that came out weren't very good. But I spent a lot of time playing the game and it was super fun. Action RPG with norse mythology. Tons of great loot and customizable gear. Most people didn't like the controls, but I thought it was actually cool and interesting once you find out how they work. They made it so the right analog stick controls the direction you swing your sword, which was actually a good idea as the gameplay was mostly hack & slash and I just think it worked well.

A couple more that I'll list without giving a summary...

Darksiders 1 & 2(action adventure)

Singularity(fps)

Darkness 2(fps)

Kingdoms of Amalur The Reckoning(action RPG)

Universe at War(RTS)

People should really check out these games. At the very least, watch a review on youtube and see if it's what you're looking for :)

I think it's incredible how many Rockstar games are so underrated:

- GTA: Vice City Stories. Not only the most underrated GTA, but also one of the most underrated games ever. It was a huge step forward its predecessor, GTA: Liberty City Stories, offering a very deep storyline, original missions and side-missions, and features everyone would want in a GTA game (especially the "Empire Business"). Also an awesome soundtrack and catchy colors that contributed in giving the game a unique atmosphere.

- The Warriors. In my opinion, the best movie-based video game ever made. The storyline (which acts as both a prequel and adaptation of the film) was amazing (it was such a nice touch to see how each member joined the gang) the combat (in the game you play as the 9 members of the Coney Island-based gang, The Warriors, and each one have unique combat styles and abilities), its dark and gritty atmosphere, the soundtrack and overall production was AAA.

- Manhunt. I don't believe the only good thing this game offers, as I've heard many people say, is the gratuitous violence, but it did really show you what a man is willing to do for his freedom, which is saying something. Plus, the atmosphere and suspense in the game felt real and terrorizing - it really put you in the protagonist's shoes.

- Oni. Nobody knows that game even exists, but it is a unique game on its own. The only game that shares some mechanics with it is Dontnod's Remember Me (which is even considered as a spiritual sequel to Oni by the rather small Oni fanbase), and it came out more than a decade later. The combat is still a blast!

- The Midnight Club series. Yet another unique Arcade Racing game series that got overshadowed by the copy-pasted NFS games. The special abilities were amazing!

- Red Dead Revolver. "Wait... did you mean Red Dead Redemption 2, right?" Enough said...

Non-Rockstar underrated games:

- MGS2: Sons of Liberty. I have to be honest here, at first I didn't like it, too; and yes, it was because of Raiden, but he grew on me, and Hideo Kojima would have never been able to tell the story he wanted without this great character.

- The Operative: No Ones Live Forever. One of the most charismatic games I've ever played. Not really underrated, but this game got forgotten.

- The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. A very solid, Stealth/FPS game. Also dark and gritty atmosphere and top-notch acting.

I forgot to add my opinion on overrated games. Call of duty. So many people play those games and they are always the same sh*t every year. It's just the same fast paced FPS game every year.

Underrated games:

- Commandos 2 and Soldiers: Heroes of World War II : - Genuinely, the Best tactical action games I have played, so far.

- Arx Fatalis :- Apart from Morrowind and Gothic 2, this is the next best RPG that comes so close to offer the level of immersion which is outstanding in its atmosphere, background music, unique spell system and the game world which easily sucks you in.

Its a shame that sh*t RPGs like Skyrim , Fallout 4, etc get a lot of attention but games like Arx Fatalis get so easily forgotten and fail in attracting enough sales that the developers lose the motivation to offer much better experiences from the potential it holds for a sequel.

- Original Ghost Recon and Hidden & Dangerous series :- Not sure about how much people still remember and continue playing these games but I always found them quite underrated compared to other overrated titles in the same genre.

- NOLF :- f*ck haters, this is the best spy game and Cate Archer is the queen in the stealth based action game characters. Period.

I'd easily give away every dollar, no matter how much money developers charge, for bringing the classics back on GOG.

- GTA San Andreas :- Very, very underrated compared to GTA V, and HD GTA's in general. Not sure why people hate this game so much.

Same. Actually, I see literally the complete opposite 99% of the time. The game is praised. Rightfully so too, IMO.

I'd put Vice City Stories and Liberty City stories in the underrated category though.

Overrated: GTA V and GTA Online

Underrated: Episodes From Liberty City

I played GTA V on Xbox 360 and PC. I enjoyed it but it's nothing like San Andreas. I think it's the most overrated GTA games. GTA IV was the first HD game and I remember it looked amazing when it came out. I wanted to play it so bad. I got an Xbox 360 a couple years after it came out.

EFLC was a good game but I wish it was longer.

Underrated games:

Far Cry games. They are pretty fun games. They aren't like Call of Duty how they release the same game every year. I'm not getting Far Cry Primal. That looks stupid to me. Anyway, Far Cry 4 was just like Far Cry 3 but it was a good game to me.

Overrated games:

League of Legends. I played it before and thought it wasn't that fun and it was just complicated to learn. I don't like MOBAs anyway.

Halo. I played Halo 3 for a little while and it wasn't fun to me. It was boring. Imo the games are like Call Of Duty.

- GTA San Andreas :- Very, very underrated compared to GTA V, and HD GTA's in general. Not sure why people hate this game so much.

I've never heard anyone say that GTA SA is underrated. A lot of people say it's their favorite GTA. It's my favorite GTA. Most of my friends don't like GTA at all. I was the one who always loved it. One person I know played League of Legends all the time and Call of Duty but didn't like GTA. That's hilarious to me imo.

Despite it's flaws I think True Crime: New York City was underrated. It had so much content and a very detailed (yet admittedly glitchy) city with more interiors than any other game at that time and decent missions. Basically one of the best unpolished games I've played.
Other underrated games:
Spec Ops: The Line
Driver: Parallel Lines
Alan Wake
Sleeping Dogs

Overrated: GTA Online.

Shadow Of Mordor while not a bad game imo, felt like it really did nothing interesting outside of the nemesis system and even that whole idea has much more potential than what the game delivered. I feel like someone should make a game that's pretty much focused around that nemesis system, but with way more depth.

Underrated game:

War Of The Monsters, an awesome giant monster fighting game I played the sh*t out of as a kid. Maybe now it feels pretty outdated, but I don't know of any game like it that has come out since and I definitely think they should make a game like that with a modern physics engine. It could be freaking awesome.

Witcher 3. Garbage, overrated piece of garbage, I'm sick of all these people saying "Witcher 3 omg, best thing since sliced bread". They disgust me.

And GTA San Andreas

GTA 4.... on the forums

Underrated:

Far Cry 4

Fallout 4. It was the game of the year. Not Witcher. -_- And "things were removed from Fallout 3" Blah. blah. Karma system? It had no point in the game besides labeling you as "good" or "evil". Plus it was just stupid how some things were considered "evil". Hitmen came after you either way in 3 and it had zero purpose in New Vegas. I actually hated karma

Watch Dogs.

San Andreas and underrated being in the same sentence doesn't sound right. It's considered by many to be not only the best GTA, but one of the best games ever made. I think Osho may have just been trying to play the Devil's Advocate.

He's shown his general discontent to the HD GTAs on countless occasions (and there's nothing wrong with that btw) however I'm not sure where he gets the idea so many people hate it from. If anything it's GTA IV and GTA V that attract their fair share of haters. Never seen that being a major problem with San Andreas in all the years I've been on this forum.

Underrated:

Watch Dogs

Bourne Conspiracy

007 Legends - very nice action-driven Bond game

Assassin's Creed Rogue - underrated not in reception but in attention. Should've gotten more of it as well as PS4/XOne release

Midnight Club LA Remix

GTA Chinatown Wars - best dialogs in GTA games. Period

24 The Game (aka Season 2.5) - nice TPS game and the story was better than in Seasons 3,5,6

Underrated: The Saboteur (poor marketing back then), Hogs Of War (much better than Worms imo).

Overrated: The two flagship games for PS and XBox... Uncharted and Halo. Good games of course but just way overrated imo.

Overrated: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - This is just my opinion. CJ isn't my favorite character, mainly because of his personality. His complaining could get on my nerves. It's the same thing with Franklin in GTA V for me. Don't get me wrong, the game was good. It's one of the best GTA's in my opinion, but it never gave me that "wow" factor. Maybe it's because I didn't play it until 2009, rather than when it was a technical masterpiece for its time in 2004.

Underrated: Assassin's Creed III - I never quite understood the hate for this game. The map was massive. The story was interesting. It had so much variety in gameplay, and in some ways it was similar to Red Dead Redemption.

One of the most underrated games for me would be Gotham City Impostors. I hate the FPS genre at this point since not many developers step up and try to create something unique, but that's exactly what Gotham City Impostors did, there's no other shooter like it due to the extreme variety of weapons, gadgets, player types, and perks. Don't think you'll find another shooter that lets you play as a fat guy on rollerskates with a bow-and-arrow and trash can lid on your chest.

That's because it is the best thing since sliced bread.

The story, endings and lore are all ripe with pure grade A class.

Underrated:

Fallout 4. It was the game of the year. Not Witcher.

giphy.gif

I like fallout as much as the next person, but if it wasn't for the modding community, Fallout wouldn't hold a candle.

Karma system? it had zero purpose in New Vegas.

What version of New Vegas did you play? Karma affected how you were received by factions and settlements a great deal more than in FO3.

Unless FO4 was your first dive into Fallout, you're nitpicking at things that have been staples since the original and logically many were sad to see depart.

That title deserves to go to Fallout 4, in my opinion, which you seem to find underrated... Like seriously, dude?
