A Parody:

In the early 1990s, widely publicized workplace shootings by disgruntled employees at USPS facilities led to a postal regulation that prohibits the possession of firearms in all postal facilities. Due to media coverage, postal employees gained a reputation among the general public as more likely to be mentally ill. The USPS Commission on a Safe and Secure Workplace found that "Postal workers are only a third as likely as those in the national workforce to be victims of homicide at work."

This stereotype in turn has influenced American culture, as seen in the slang term "going postal" (see Patrick Sherrill for information on his August 20, 1986, rampage) and the computer game Postal. Also, in the opening sequence of Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, a yell of "Disgruntled postal workers" is heard, followed by the arrival of postal workers with machine guns. In an episode of Seinfeld, the character Newman, who is a mailman, explained in a dramatic monologue that postal workers "go crazy and kill everyone" because the mail never stops. In The Simpsons episode Sunday, Cruddy Sunday, Nelson Muntz asks Postmaster Bill if he has "ever gone on a killing spree", with a reply of, "The day of the disgruntled postman went out with the Macarena".

Post office workers go on killing sprees because "The mail never stops! It just keeps coming and coming and coming, there's never a let-up! It's relentless! Every day it piles up more and more and more! And you gotta get it out! But the more you get it out the more it keeps coming in! And then the bar code reader breaks, and it's Publisher's Clearing House day...!"

The return of Rampage:

Postal is a 3D shooter:

The default weapon is a weak machine gun with unlimited ammo.

The goal is not just to stay alive and reach the next level, but to kill a given percentage of the armed NPCs on the map. Only then the exit to the next level is activated.

There is no plot as such. The presence of a moving van on the first level suggests that the Postal Dude has been evicted from his home and is therefore "going postal", but no background story evolves during the game. However, the manual hints at a possible backstory (the Postal Dude believes the town's population has been infected by a madness plague), and an endgame video implies that the Postal Dude succumbed to his psychosis and is now incarcerated in a government facility.

Was that from the GTA V trailer then? There are certainly many play on word visual cues and gags in GTA, and that's not likely to see a change

I don't know what it's like in other people's countries but here in England, Post Office workers are some of the most miserable people you'll ever meet. I guess it must be something to do with that line of work, or they are all aliens like in MIB 2.

I've never met anyone agitated at the post office, in fact, they're very cordial and easy going, even the mailmen I've dealt with. I'm not making this up. It really probably depends on their locations and workloads.

Same here in Texas. I've never met a postman that wasn't polite. I can see how the job could be very stressful though.

Here we have R* parodying the U.S.P.S. employees as people who may "lose it". And I liked the Postal's idea of a rampage game as a feature of GTAV.

Yeah, Wat?!?! Seriously, I noticed the van in the trailer after I saw the still and wondered about that. I missed it as I ran the trailer in it's normal speed, except for random pauses here and there

One of the mysteries of the GTA universe is why in-game trademarks are indicated with the sound recording copyright symbol and not the proper ™ trademark or ® registered trademark symbols. My theory is this is an obscure reference to the Houser brothers' past with BMG Music where the ℗ symbol would have used.

I think the slogan "We aim not to lose it" is referring to your mail. As in, "we try not to lose your mail". They're a post office. Get it? cool.gif

Lol, I figured that was self explanatory. Some of these people's theories are just...wow.

I'm sure thats it as well, but I also think its a double meaning, also refering to possibly "going postal". It's closing in on 20 years since the incident, so you don't really hear about it that much anymore, the jokes are gone. But when the shooting incident first happened, it was HUGE, and subsequently spawned years worth of jokes about posties going crazy & shooting up the place.

I think R* using the term "aim" and "lose it" is a pretty dead giveaway to that reference. If it was just about mail, they could've used different terms. Typical subtle R* joke, I like it.

Exactly.

@g4td Obviously I knew that it referred to not losing the mail but there is an indirect reference to "Going postal" as "losing it" is a phrase for "losing your temper". Its a subtle joke which only few will understand. R* parodies America in every way they can. U.S.P.S. has the glory of being in the list of R*'s parodies now. biggrin.gif

Fair enough. I see where you're coming from. I clicked on the link you posted and read about 'school shootings' and 'massacres' for about an hour. It really made me think about the type of game I was playing. I understand Grand Theft Auto is just a game, but if you really think about it... it's dark. (Especially the 'rampage' missions in San Andreas.)

It has 2 meanings, the obvious one and the "going postal" one.

Just like in III era, you have the BF injection, or the BEEF injection.

It's just a joke, R* do this all the time, a clever play on words.

This is why i love rockstar, they are so serious and at the same time they joke about everything.

Finn 7 five 11

I was actually thinking on this a few weeks ago, but then i dismissed myself thinking that Rockstar surely wouldn't go that far, they simply meant they were trying not to lose the mail.

Classic episode of seinfeld though, every episode is.

That is why they don't add children in the game. That would make the game, a sick massacre arena.

Rampages were always optional so even if they return, they are likely to be optional.

In GTA III, we had to burn 25 gang members in a fixed time with a flame thrower.

In Vice City, we had a mission of filling a rampage bar by going berserk using fire-arms.

Those days, the graphics weren't as realistic as today. If one such compulsory rampage mission is added now, it sure will create controversy. Depends upon the storyline though and the gore-level.

I, for one won't mind a rampage mission unless they are on the funnier side and not sadistic. Like, killing gang members through a postal van equipped with a minigun. Also, I won't mind being forced to deliver the posts while the killing spree is on. biggrin.gif

Couldn't it also be the release date. In the same scene behind the truck there is 2405 and For Sale on the sign. That can't be a coincidence for sure. Unless Rockstar is just playing with us. But I don't think it's a coincidence 100%. Either they're talking about the release date 24/05 or Rockstar likes making fight over stuff.

I don't know if it's just another typical Rockstar joke, this time associating "We aim not to lose it" to postal cases, or a subliminal about the release date. I just know if it's the last situation, we all know the game will be delayed for some reason. So it sounds like a self-joke for me. tounge.gif
