Strange HICCUPS on a very powerful computer...

Hello guys my name is Felipe I'm from France and I bought GTA4 a long time ago and I still usually play MP with it.

But recently I upgraded my comp. to a very powerful one and although the benchmark shows 60fps average on the test with everything maxed out at 1920 x 1080 I get hiccups all the time, I'm suspecting I need and SSD but maybe theres a way that I don't know to fill more memory instead of streaming from the HDD. Thats why I'm posting here.

Here my specs (nothings its OC'ed):

Core i7-2700k 3.5 ghz

16 GB G.skill mem PC-2133

ASUS P8Z68-V LE Chipset Z68

MSI Radeon HD 6990 4GB

Cooler Master Silent Pro M1000W

Western digital CAVIAR BLACK 64Mb 1TB <- I suspect the problem its over here.

I'm running windows 7.

I have the Steam version of GTA4.

I'm using -norestrictions -nomemrestrict.

This is a result of the GTA4 test (Some translations may wrong I'm running it on Spanish ATM.)

First of all, I assume your Windows 7 is the 64bit version, if not, then it should be to fully use your ram.

What do you mean by hiccups? I assume, stuttering. Well, for a start, the in game settings are far too and unnecessarily high. Try changing shadows to high, night shadows to medium, low or even off, view distance say 30, detail distance say 50. I think you will notice little difference in image quality, but an improvement in performance.

An SSD will improve load times, but not game play, imo.

Also, my usual advice, use the commandline -reservedapp 0 , which will free more ram memory for the game and reduce stuttering.

Thanks luceberg I'll try that now.

Yes with hiccups I mean stutering and yes its a 64 bit windows7.

The game seems to run silky smooth and get stutering when loading from HDD.

original poster, play with your night shadow settings, turn them completely off at first, then eke them back up. same for your vehicle settings. you have a nice machine, i must admit, but GTA IV is a game fraught with performance issues, especially for ATI cards, i don't care that they have various patches for those issues now. i saw first hand what rockstar toronto did (i have two hd 4850 and am now just using one to play portal 2 on my ECS PT890T-A that doesn't work with nvidia video cards)
