Are R* running out of ideas?

First, lets not compare GTA with CoD, please.

Different Games, both have their audience and both are very good at what they aim to be.

As far as GTA series "ending", I really doubt it. Some series have been around since forever. If a game sells well, you can expect it to stay on.

COD doesn't aim to be anything more than it already is & that's the fault of Activision. They insist on sticking their snouts in the money trough on a yearly basis. They are big fat lazy pigs who are ready for the slaughter. The idiots who pay $60 + $50 for maps every 12 months aren't without fault as well.

I'm glad R* has had some success this generation, outside of the GTA franchise. It must've been a risk creating your own engine & then basing most of your games on it. I know some people bash IV for being boring but seriously, I tried going back & playing the old games. They were better in my memories & that's where they will stay but that's just me. Although if they did make a San Andreas Stories, I could be tempted.

If EVER there was a game that had staying power, it is GTA. The very structure that the franchise is built on, lends itself to creativity on a higher scale than ANY other game. Not being dependent on any specific character means an almost limitless possibility on protagonists, because in the world of GTA, the ENVIRONMENT is the hero. As graphics, physics and gameplay become even more realistic, there will eventually be NO LIMIT on what you can do. In the end, it will outlast other games simply because of these factors. Any other game is much more suceptible to running out of ideas. COD is basically the same game, pumped out annually, with slight changes that only hardcore fans could detect. I've played a couple of them, and even enjoyed them, but once i finished the campaign, i NEVER replayed ANY of them. They don't REALLY have stories, OR characters i gave a damn about. Basically, they are simply one battle after the next. The term "replayability" was coined because of GTA. If GTA ever DOES run out of ideas, it will solely be because of developers creativity hitting a wall.

I'm not saying they will run out of ideas but I can't see how far technology can improve. Surely we will reach a limit where nothing can be improved in terms of graphics? I know they can give us new stories and new cities but the overall graphics and things to do may hit a limit. One of the reasons SA was so exciting was because of all the new features not previously seen in VC like flying a plane and swimming, but what will GTAV have that other GTA's have yet to show?

Actually, LCS and VCS weren't the first portable GTAs. There were others before it- such as GTA Advance.

I think we should stop making it mandatory for rockstar to do something extreme and drastic. new story, maps, characters, objects, fun sh*t should be enough. it seems like we all expect them to do too much ground breaking things.

I'm getting a tad fed up about people moaning about GTA IV was just a graphics update.

I went back to SA recently, and the amount of little things that changed in IV made the game so much fun. Simple things like being able to drive through fences, free aim in cars, use pistols and grenades in cars, much better wanted system, the amount of detail in the city (looking at SA the city looks clean and empty, no rubbish filled ally ways, etc...), cars actually hitting you, etc...

With the amount of detail they put into IV, no wonder they did not have time to do all the features from previous games. But IV makes you feel like you are running around a living city where as SA never sucked me in as much.

No doubt with GTA made with the RAGE engine they will have less to do as they will have all these hundreds of random objects and I'm sure we will see loads more features and improvements in V.

P.S. There were flyable planes in VC btw... and III for that matter if you learned how to do it tounge.gif

Who said it was just a graphics update? Those players don't know what they're talking about, and honestly, I don't think anyone said that! hahaha

COD doesn't try to be in anyway different from the last thing it was and that is so refreshing in its sameness. sarcasm.gif But on topic. GTA has had and still has as its motivation the need to try to outdo itself with each new game. With IV they had to drastically change its gameplay, physics, and graphics to reinvent itself for the new gen. of consoles. It was a successful experiment and they will capitolize off what worked and bring to the table new improvements, old favorites, and completely new features. That is what R* does best. smile.gif

I don't think they are running out of ideas. They are making the natural progression in the hardware's (PS3, 360) life cycle. They did that from GTA 3 to VC to SA as many before me have noted. I think GTAV is going to be what San Andreas was for the PS2. Meaning a huge map and lots to do, but its going to have that beautiful GTAIV polish to it! (not to mention a few more tricks up R*'s sleeve)

always remember: "in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created."

I've always thought GTA4 would be more like GTA3, more of a story driven based GTA. Less side missions, vehicles, cheats, activites, weapons and such. GTA5 and any other on the current gen systems would resemble Vice City, San Andreas, or a mix of the two

With the DLC we saw a bit of Return-2-Form, so with a full on new GTA, this generation, it'll have to be more interesting then GTA IV, Right now, there's not enough known yet. I'm going to sit it out till the next trailer then make some more assumptions about where GTA might be headed, and GTA V will be like. At least some more official info o it

I agree. Why is it not enough to get another fun chapter in the world of GTA? We have reached a point where we DEMAND to be blown away. That simply CANNOT be sustained much longer. GTA is judged on a MUCH higher standard, than other games.

Well there wasn't a drastic step up from 3 to VC, so I'm not predicting something completely mind blowing in IV. Considering that IV will be the last GTA game for the current consoles, I think Rockstar can and will think of something new to bring to the table in the next generation. Graphical improvements, lighting, ect., is something we can all definitely look forward to in the next generation consoles (icEnchancer ring a bell?) and better character facial structures and emotions (like LA Noire but on a more widespread usage like for simple peds ect.) Possibilities are endless, so I don't really know why you're doubting Rockstar.

Snake Without a Tongue

Still better than 98% of my peers who's main goal in life is to get drunk every Saturday, not remembering anything the next day and claiming it was "the best night of their lives". At least I have something. smile.gif

Amen. When I was younger I use to see people laughing and seeming to enjoy themselves more than I could ever try. Then I hung out with them and realized they were blithering idiots who were easily amused.

So... video games. Alright, that wasn't a good example.

Anyway, nah, there's no such thing as running out of ideas. And even though R* is repeating themselves more than I care for, I don't think you can accuse them of being unoriginal.

If we see a change/improvement equal to that of the change from GTAIII to Vice City then I will be VERY happy.

i'd be happier with the change/improvement of vice city to san andreas. not because vice city wasn't good but because of all the new stuff there was to do. (vice city's radio is still No.1 tho)

just my 2 cents smile.gif

Honestly I think it'll be a similar jump from GTA III to VC unless they plan on GTA V being the last GTA this gen.

Key thing to remember Rockstar saying, is how they approach the series.... Geography is ALWAYS laid down in advance of missions, mini games, and most of the finishing touches. We can assume that the script and story ideas work out just as early as the map, since that's a key part of each GTA; Characters and story are the most important things. As I recall, recent interviews stated that ideas from natural locations play into the map designs, as they go to various locations to document via actual photos

Art director Aaron Garbut or Les The Benz said at one time that they had stacks of photos and videos studying traffic patterns at things like intersections, so they really look at how to get a realistic edge simulated into the game franchise. Seemed to me when I read that, a bit too much background about how to build the game, it would be very time consuming, but it's aiding the builds from the looks of things so far.

R* know how to handle this series. They know how to hyped the game even w/o info or trailer just an announcement will keep the fans hype and very excited. No other game ever done that kind of hype for what I know.

And R* won't run out of ideas especially on GTA series, NEVER...

I can't get your point, if your saying GTA will end one day...well guess what, that much is obvious. Everything will come to an end one day, you don't need to worry about things you cannot influence. YOU will come to an end one day, and speaking relatively, the day someone dies, EVERYTHING comes to an end - for that person anyway.

However if you mean GTA will come to a premature death or is even at risk of ending, you can toss that idea out the window. GTA is a series with a very long staying power. Multiple main characters means the series hasn't been built solely around one MC, who when retired - ends the series abruptly (the likes of Uncharted and Hitman for example). Secondly, the game can be set in a large number of environments all over the world (for some games only one particular location makes any sense). Thirdly, the gameplay struture of GTA is go anywhere, do anything, freedom of player choice. Essentially, GTA is an open world game which makes use of multiple main characters, its set in varied location, all these features pretty much mean its a game that can continue to be made for countless years.

On the graphical side, I don't see the issue. R* will continue to improve and update RAGE as far as technology allows them to. New consoles will arrive, there will be GTAs on them too. The game will continue to make new leaps and strides visually and physics wise, don't see the concern there. We still have a long way to go graphically speaking, games are no where NEAR their visual potential yet. We don't even have games as technically advanced as movies such as Toy Story 2 yet. Not to mention, the likes of Avatar. GTA, much like other games will continue to improve visually - potentially till we reach the point of photo-realism.

Features wise, R* will continue to adapt GTA to its new settings, we will always get new gameplay features, I don't even know why you made this thread considering details of GTA V's features are yet to be released. It's damn obvious that GTA V, the very next GTA, will have a lot of new content/features for us to play around with...

Lastly, stop doubting R* - They are quite easily one of the few game developers that are on point with pretty much all their games. They don't make games just for the money, you can tell they put a lot of effort, heart and soul into each title. Especially, Grand Theft Auto - their prized and cherished possession.

GTAIV mastered the physics and graphics. GTAV will master gameplay. They're most likely going to pack as much as they can into this game, just like they did with San Andreas. I hope it feels like an RPG.

Gameplay includes:

• Multiplayer

• Customization

• The Wanted Level System

• AI

It is actually pretty obvious GTA is going to become the next CoD. Just look at the sheer number of games. They even made DLCs. How much do you think R* can continue making good GTA games? They will eventually begin making one GTA per year.

It's actually sad when you think about it. GTA is pretty much the peak of gaming. When it will end its reign, I doubt any other game series will be able to rise to the level of what GTA currently is and was. I'm actually thinking "Didn't this actually start a long time ago?". Maybe it did. Maybe we're as mindless as those CoD fans. We just want more GTA...

Well, just think about it. The way I see it, GTA V will be a prettier looking GTA IV with no new gameplay features (what shocked me was that my best friend agreed and said there's nothing wrong with it). I simply see no new features in the trailer, so it probably it's just that.

That is pretty short sighted I must say. The trailer didn't really show much of anything so to assume that it is just a simple rehash of IV is kind of rediculous. They said it is their most ambitious installment yet. I think they are telling the truth with that one. Yes?

Downright unfounded. How can you peel all this info off one teaser trailer??

The fact of the matter is, technology has improved vastly over the last 20 years, and we are suddenly plateauing out and the rate at which things are improved is slowing down.

I'm not saying this thread in particular is guilty of this, but everyone has started complaining about games being similar to prvious version and they are simply 'DLC'. Notably MW3 and FIFA 12.

GTA V wont be as revolutionary at GTA 3 or GTA IV were, but that not R*'s fault.

There were gunmods, dogs, countryside, a jetsky, hydra, improved civilian interactions, and probably other stuff that isn't obvious yet. Anyways, even the ones I just listed are a lot from a 1:30 trailer that barely shows anything.

I can't believe how many people REALLY think that they deserve the moon and the stars for 60 bucks. You can barely fill your gas tank for that amount. Try going on a date for that amount. On the other hand, Rockstar gives us games we can enjoy for many hours, NOT including the incredible replay value. Most other games collect dust after completing just ONCE. The same people who constantly whine about what THEY want from a game company, are the SAME types who scream at the poor chinese lady who did'nt put enough hot sauce on their $2.50 order of chicken wings. If you can find so much in GTA to complain about, then why do you continue to buy the game? Keep your measly f*cking 60 dollars and spend it on a blow job.
