wildstyle91
I love GTA,it's my favourite gaming series but it seems that as graphics are getting more and more realistic to the point of looking almost life like, they are starting to running out of new features/improvements to add to the next game. Will GTA5 be more of a sidestep when compared to IV in terms of graphics and things to do? I know they will add flyable planes but that was a feature of SA anyway so nothing new. What can they add to this game that we've not seen before? I will break down what the previous (notable) games had: GTA3 - First 3D GTA game. Probably the biggest step forward. Vice City - Motorbikes, helicopters, asset properties. Reasonable improvement. San Andreas - Flyable planes, enormous map, swimming capabilities, loads of minigames. Pretty good step forward. LCS, VCS - Side steps, nothing new. First GTA's on portable consoles. GTA4 - Major improvement in graphics for next gen consoles. New game engine. Nice step forward. GTAV - Well what will the next step be? I see it as more of a polished GTA4/ what IV should have been in terms of graphics. Where can they go after this? Unless there is some new technology on the horizon like actually being in the game (when you wear one of them helmets) I see the rest of the GTA's as sidesteps that are running out of ideas. I am genuinely excited about GTA5 but I expect it to be similar to GTA4 just in a different city and more countryside to explore. Where can they go after this game? straxi1234
New technology and new areas to depict in-game. I think that R* could still do heaps with GTA.

They are simply re-doing these cities to bring them "justice"; then they will move on to new cities. EDIT: Curse you, straxi1234 for 1st post! ALMOST610
If they can make money of the franchise they will come up with ideas, in anyway they can.
Finn 7 five 11
Well. Flyable planes, enormous map, loads of minigames. Pretty good step forward. - San Andreas. Well IV did not have flyable planes, the map was pretty big, but not as big as San Andreas (the level of detail was ridiculous though), and there were barely any mini games. So Really IV still has a big step to take, things that can be improved. - Storyline, Character animations, diving underwater again, parkour. There is more but i can't seem to think of them right now. Jeeebuuus
I don't think R* are running out of ideas. They will probably add new features in V, but it's almost certain that the physics in all areas will be improved. The setting, gameplay features, graphics, and physics will probably make this the most popular GTA of the series and will sell like crazy. And most people will love it. Slamman
It's fine if you compare to all of Last Gen and San Andreas on that hardware. Rockstar could have taken all they knew from PS2 era 3, VC, SA and made many many more GTAs much like that GTA 5 and 4 on the new systems could go the same way, but I think they'll move to the next batch of systems in the next 2 years
TheTrooth
GTA IV is a prime example of changing the game to suite the time without actually changing the feel. Whatever happens GTA will still reign.

Slamman
It'll Sidestep a bit, but in a good way. I've been here since late 2003, and I know people have felt the GTA formula would or could get long in the tooth, but they keep making it enticing and that's why we love it! Ratone
Evolution in games, specially if we're talking about long running series, always needs a little bit of "switch-tracks" or else the developer won't be able to keep up with it. GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas pretty much followed the same track. As each new game add new features to it, developed some things presented in the previous games and polished it. GTA IV switched tracks, instead of trying to "keep up" with everything that was on San Andreas, adding even more vehicles, even bigger map, even more customization options, the game opted for another path. More emphasis on communication between characters, realism, side-missions and etc. This is necessary because if GTA IV tried to "Outnumber" GTA San Andreas, people would be expecting GTA V to have 600 vehicles, 300 clothes, 100 side-games, 10 towns and etc. With that in mind, we can expect GTA V to develop what was shown in GTA IV and add some new unexpected features. by Develop, I don't mean the usual "developing" that games do, but if you pay attention, every GTA game always had some "simple" features that were "stretched and shaped" on the next game. GTA Vice City had things like Food and Clothes, GTA San Andreas then pushed it and so on. So anyway, I don't think R* is running out of ideas. They are just being smart about what they do now and what they "save up", dealing with people's expectations is needed in today's gaming market. Gran Turismo is a good example of a series that weren't careful when dealing with numbers/content and people's expectations.
Slamman
I think he suggested the mission style would become too predictable and the vehicles or changes to add in the sandbox run low on ideas. It's not likely to matter that much when the land and geography change, and the story and characters all change. It's like reading a book or watching a movie, only completely interactive
jamieleng
A "sidestep" GTA game from R*, is most developers 'career defining' game. There is a lot more they can do with the GTA franchise, just not this gen. Edited November 28, 2011 by jamieleng

GTA_fear
I wanted to make a similar topic, but to hell with it now. In a nutshell... Everything comes to an end. We know that. And so will GTA one day. Basically, I think what happened to the CoD franchise will happen to GTA over time. It'll happen to all video games. When will it happen? I have no idea. GTA V, GTA VI, maybe GTA VII, will still remain at the top of the gaming world - but after that, things will start going downhill. It will be like watching leaves falling from trees in autumn/fall, remembering your whole summer holidays, your friends, your laughs, your farts, your happiness. I expect GTA V and GTA VI to be the peak of GTA's glory. And once GTA fades away from memory, I will have one less beautiful thing in my life. One less childhood memory. One less reason to live. Cool life bro Anyways, I can still see new features added, like weapon modding, more stealth, activities, even with little details like adding dogs could bring new things, like adding a kennel job. Hell it wouldn't be any different than delivering Pizzas in VC. F*cking whatever, they can even move the series to a future setting, so they can just make up their own sh*t to add. Ratone
First, lets not compare GTA with CoD, please. Different Games, both have their audience and both are very good at what they aim to be. As far as GTA series "ending", I really doubt it. Some series have been around since forever. If a game sells well, you can expect it to stay on. Kraljik
Hell no. I'm a simulation lover. That's why I hate un-realistic and sci-fi games. GTAIV was the pinacle for me. I'm playing this game since I got it to this day, and I got the game 2 and a half weeks before it released. So GTAV for me, can only get even better. And watching the trailer it's on 100% path to succeeding at it.

73duster
If EVER there was a game that had staying power, it is GTA. The very structure that the franchise is built on, lends itself to creativity on a higher scale than ANY other game. Not being dependent on any specific character means an almost limitless possibility on protagonists, because in the world of GTA, the ENVIRONMENT is the hero. As graphics, physics and gameplay become even more realistic, there will eventually be NO LIMIT on what you can do. In the end, it will outlast other games simply because of these factors. Any other game is much more suceptible to running out of ideas. COD is basically the same game, pumped out annually, with slight changes that only hardcore fans could detect. I've played a couple of them, and even enjoyed them, but once i finished the campaign, i NEVER replayed ANY of them. They don't REALLY have stories, OR characters i gave a damn about. Basically, they are simply one battle after the next. The term "replayability" was coined because of GTA. If GTA ever DOES run out of ideas, it will solely be because of developers creativity hitting a wall.
