I have a very nice rig that exceeds the system requirements of GTA IV by a large margin but i cannot seem to get the game to run properly

The reccomended system requirements call for an Nvidia Geforce 8700

I own a Nvidia Geforce 9500

Surely this should be enough to run GTA on decent settings but instead on lowest and i mean LOWEST settings i am able to pull 30 fps

And please dont tell me I need to upgrade my rig because I can run MW2,CoD4,Borderlands,Fallout 3,Fallout:NV on max settings and still get 30-45 fps

Please tell me if there is anything i can do to make this game run on higher settings than currently.

A GeForce 9500GT is a very weak card, it's normal that you can only play IV on very low settings.

Sorry for saying, but you actually should upgrade your rig. It's not enough for today's standards.

As for the other games, they aren't very graphical intense wink.gif

But what are your full specs?

Thanks for Fast Reply

Here are my Specs

Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT (sorry typing error in original post)

Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)

OS:Windows XP Professional

Memory:3070 RAM

DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC

Current Resolution: 1360 x 768

Approx Total Memory 1024.0 MB

Is this decent? confused.gif

No, sorry.

You're CPU is very outdated, you must be lucky to get IV running on that.

Many people don't get it to run on such pc's.

And no, there's not much you can do about it confused.gif

By the way, a 9800GT is much better then the 9500GT, but neither is good for real gaming.

Oh well, guess ill just have to stick with the First Person Sooters on PC and save the RPGs and free roam games (excluding Fallout) for console I have learned my lesson

On the other hand, if GTA IV is more demanding than other games why are the requirements advertized as only needing an Nvidia Geforce 8700 GT

The minimum is even lower: GeForce 7900GT.

The recommended: GeForce 8600GT.

But, the minimum means absolute lowest settings and ~20 fps.

The recommended means low/medium at ~30 fps.

IV is just very badly ported, that's why it's such a heavy game wink.gif

Just curious, but I thought the minimum requirements were supposed to be the equivalant(spelling?) to the console versions? confused.gif

On topic, According to this site here, that card(the 9800) is equivelent to the 8800. Also the Pentium D is NOT a supported processor for the game, as the Minimum processor for Intel is the Core2Duo. You have a processor that has not been made since 2006(which is before the game was released).-As seen here on this site. So, that goes to show you have a weaker processor than the Core2Duo, which is the minimum for Intel processors.

This is what I've been told here once.

Besides, the console settings are way to high for the minimum requirements, if you'd ask me wink.gif

no no no no. the game was coded for the tri core power pc chip in the xbox 360.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/1865

that is why the recommended settings are for tri-cores and quad cores. gta rendering pays attention to cores and clock speed. that pentium d isn't as efficient as the core 2 duo that replaced it, but i haven't seen GTA care one bit. i have a 380 optiplex dell that i just swapped a pentium d 940 into, rockstar games and microsoft's installation limits are the only thing that is keeping me from installing the game on it to prove these other people in this thread wrong. if i ever catch GTA IV on a good sub $10 sale somewhere for the disc version, heads are going to roll

original poster, your main problem is that you are running the game at too high of a resolution for a dual core GTA machine. reduce it, reduce both detail settings to 10, turn vehicles down to one

i can play fine with x2 3800+/x2 4400+ and 8800gt (previous version of 9800gt) @ 30fps with everything turned down, but i am playing at 1024x768. if you haven't left the forum in disgust and can see this post, please try my suggestions. good luck

edit - PS: my x2 3800+ came out in 2001, according to the engraving stamp on the chip...

rockstar games and microsoft's installation limits are the only thing that is keeping me from installing the game on it to prove these other people in this thread wrong.

What install limits?-There are "Unlimited installations" from Rockstar Games, the ONLY one that is limited is the Windows Live-and that is what 30 installs on that? confused.gif -it is virtually impossible to use up that many installs, unless you have tons of PC's OR you mess up on modding A LOT OR your HD fails that many times(which that is a little extreme if your HD fails that much OR if you reformat that many times, it is your fault, as there is NO need to reformat-unless you are upgrading OS's, from a 32-bit to 64-bit as if you have the same type OS(ie. 64-bit previously), you can upgrade to a new OS(64-bit) without losing anything.) Also, there is a program to bypass Windows Live-it is called Xliveless, so there should be no need to use a Live activation. Even if by chance you do max. out(and I don't see how that's possible? confused.gif ) your Live activations, all you have to do is e-mail/call Microsoft to get the activations reinstated(may take 10 minutes at most over the phone-and there is a toll free 800 number you can call to so it is a free call). Just curious on that?
