The "Not" So Endless Ocean of IV....

NYC PATROL

Recommended Posts

So as many of you may have originally thought, the ocean in GTA IV you figured was endless actually had a limit.

I even tested it myself(To the ocean limit and back to the city took me a little over an Hour or so in REAL LIFE suicidal.gif ). Unlike the video you will see in this thread, you

actually pass a point in the ocean where you start to lose health then you eventually die unless you turn back. You don't die instantly.

As seen here:

Ok, So the main question. Do you think V will have this ocean limit like IV , and (Correct me if i'm wrong)San Andreas had an infinite amount of ocean space. What's your take? What would you prefer?

Obviously this isn't a huge deal to the game, but since there is really no other info out there to discuss on V why not this?

I was waiting for somebody to bring this up. I LOVED how SA had infinite ocean. I DID NOT LOVE how IV had limited ocean. I realllly hope V will be like SA in that respect. smile.gif

I think we'll have a lot of desert until we reach an electric fence that says, "Piss here to continue"

Now that would make me laugh my ass of for a long time.

Now about the topic of endless ocean, I don't care, I didn't even know GTAIV had an ocean limit till now, I never bothered to test it, and I never really went that far in SA or VC or anything either, no point all the fun was on the land anyway.

Though I would prefer the endless ocean to be the barrier (or like IV the killing ocean) but when it comes down to it, I can care less.

Is it possible that it's actually time based rather than distance? I swear I've died in the ocean before and didnt even travel out for more than 15 minutes. Then again I wasn't actually in a boat at the time..crashed my heli.

I don't understand why this matters. There's going to be nothing "out there". It's just the ocean or the desert. It would have mattered if we had some incentive to go out there and look for something. But that has never been the case.

No i believe its distance based. When I tested it myself I went about 25-28 IN-GAME miles before I started to lose health.

Well, that's the thing. As I stated in the 1st post its not that important, just something to discuss and think about till new

GTA V info.

Actually, I'd be glad if R* does put something out there just for us to embark on an endless hunt to look for it. That would definitely keep us busy and occupied for a significant amount of time after the game is finished.

A sea monster or something maybe? Or some sort of easter egg.

Imgine just going out there for ever and ever and all of a sudden a huge tenticle comes up and drags your boat under.

Yeah a bit childish but it'd be good for the lolz.

Even if there was an easter egg buoy sign that read:

"You came all the way out here expecting something good didn't you?"

I'd be happy cool.gif

Well, they could put fishes into the ocean that we could actually fish. Maybe throw in a fishing sub-mission that you can re-do anytime, anywhere.

Exploring the oceans has always been so much fun remember finding the ghost town in gta3 really hard on ps2 but incredibly easy on pc due to mods smile.gif,

And I remember spending hours and days looking for another ghost island after my friend told me you could get there in a sea plane (never found it wonder why lol)

And trying to get back to liberty city after the Marcos bistro shoot out level but crashing your plane after flying for a hour and crashing in the ocean swimming for what seems like forever then scaling the mountins on the far side of the dessert

And I never really tried with IV the helicopters where to slow

But I would prefer sa ocean due to the immersion factor and mission possibilities

Yeah, as our protagonist *might* be the middle aged / old guy

I can just imagine a mission like this:

"You must now go fishing 25 miles off the Los Santos Coast on Jerry's boat"

I think the reason they may have had a limiting distance is due to online gaming and the issues that could arise with unlimited space; they saw no reason to redo the script for single player, most likely. Expect the same in GTA V.

That's definitely the most logical reason i've heard regarding it.

So one day you drove a boat out into the ocean for a HALF HOUR?!?! Died and got pissed?!

It's just that feeling of being in different surroundings, and being waaaaaaaaaaaaay far away from civilization, it just felt bizarre and was fun. In multiplayer, if you went out there, it felt like you were a loner or something, and it made me angry when it said that I couldn't go any further. I don't like feeling restricted, if I want to go forever, well hell, that's my choice. biggrin.gif

what if ROCKSTAR actually put in like a wall like in TRUMAN SHOW? with the steps steps and a door as an in-joke directed towards us??!! and that door actually leads to somewhere....

that would be super cool!!

As far as I know the ocean in IV was limitless, I used the health cheat in an annhililator every so often, and eventually me and my helicopter just disappeared, but I could still keep going. You disappear after about 4 health refreshes so you really have to go waaaaay out there.

does it really matter? in IV you need about half an hour to get to barrier, thats enormous space i dont know why do you need infinite ocean or deserts it will be fine if they made it same way like in IV

Personally i think this is kind of a stupid part of the game... who cares if the ocean is endless or limited there is no reason to go that far out, HOWEVER if there was an incentive to go out that far like Oil Rigs, Yacht Parties, Fishing etc then maybe but even then it wouldn't matter if it is limited. I have much more fun on land than driving a boat for an hour into nothing.... pointless

I didn't even know there was an ocean limit for GTA IV.

And I think it's fine. In fact, it could be even "shorter", say you die after 10 minutes into the ocean or so.

After all, so far there's NOTHING to do in the oceans. So, it's pointless to waste resources and time trying to improve or expand it.

If they find a way to add some more ocean activities, then it's all cool. Until then, I wouldn't mind some kind of sea barrier (Giant waves, patrol police boats, whatever that kills you and put you back on land)

I still remember that time when I was chasing Ryder (SA) and he jumped into the boat and I couldn't catch him quickly, because I ran out of ammo. So, I was forced to bump into his boat forever until the damned catched fire. If there was a virtual limit after some time, the mission would've ended faster.

Btw, you don't need to swim or navigate for half an hour to feel there's no land nearby. That's easily doable in the first 5 minutes inside the endless ocean.

Knowing GTA if there was a virtual limit it would've said:

MISSION FAILED.
